I have great lawn but some brown spots and I can pick up clumps of the brown grass and it looks like the grass has been cut at the base. Is this a sign of grubs? If so how can I confirm this.

Hi Paul - It is possible grub damage. Grubs tend to be at the surface and when you pull out the clumps they would be fairly visible. Try taking a shovel and digging around the areas in the first few inches and see if you spot grubs. If not it may have been due to other insect damage like chinch bugs.
