Hi Mike - We would recommend seeding the lawn first this fall. Now is the best time to seed and if you seed first it will give your lawn a chance to get established. The crabgrass will die in the first frost but if you want to you could deal with it once the new grass has been mowed a couple of times. If you apply a crabgrass preventer first you will not be able to seed this fall since most do not allow you to seed.
The same day you seed also apply Mag-I-Cal Calcium Fertilizer and Love Your Lawn-Love Your Soil. This organic duo will improve the pH and overall quality of your soil. Oftentimes weeds are the result of poor soil conditions. Lastly use either New Seeding Lawn Fertilizer or Winter Survival Fall Fertilizer to give the new seedlings the nutrients they need.
