Straw on Shady Nooks to prevent wash out from rain.

I have a large area in my lawn that is pretty much just soil because of amount shade I have in my yard is really making it tough to have grass there...so we (my wife and I) did our research and found Shady nooks as the best option to grow grass in this area. Last year I bought a small amount of Pennington Shade mix and grew grass in a test area. The Pennington grew just as needed but when we had medium to heavy rain, it washed out the grass completely. I have already put down Shady Nooks in the entire lawn where I need to grow grass with all the proper soil preparation as described on the packaging. I am confident that the seeds will germinate but I am worried that that when the grass is a couple inches tall that rain may wash away thus wasting all the effort my wife and I put in let alone the money we spent also. I read that putting down rolled straw can help prevent this wash out. Do I put the straw down just after I sow my seeds or after the grass has grown a couple inches? My concern with putting straw down down is that it will create a heavy shade thus preventing germination of the seeds or growth of the grass since the straw will create a shade over the seeds/grass as if it was a blanket (or so it seems from the straw packaging). I would hate to put down straw that prevents germination or growth. Obviously I would get the rolled straw that is meant for new grass growth. Has anyone had experience with putting down rolled straw over Shady Nooks.
