Over the years there have been discussions of whether a lawn is the best thing for your yard. While some would say that a lawn requires too much work, when the proper maintenance and materials are used there are many reasons why a healthy growing lawn is enjoyed and good for the environment.
The benefits of lawns are many. First, a thick, green, healthy growing lawn provides a great framework for your yard. It compliments the nice landscaping and enhances its property values. The lawn creates a positive emotion of good feelings. The rich, green color lifts your spirits and walking on bare feet on a lush green lawn feels great. Many folks try to make their yard a little slice of heaven and the lawn plays an important part.
Lawns purify the air. The leaves of grass plants absorb pollutants, including those associated with acid rain and the “greenhouse effect”. Grass plants remove carbon dioxides from the air and produce oxygen in return! The average lawn of 5,000 square feet provides enough oxygen for eight people every day.
Lawns improve the quality of our surroundings. The lawn around your house cools the immediate environment, saving on air conditioning costs. Grass controls erosion and soil conditions by reducing “run-off” water. Lawns also trap dust and smoke particles cleaning the environment area us. A healthy lawn purifies water, reduces noise and reduces glare.
Grass clippings and yard waste are approximately 20% of the volume in our nations landfills. To reduce these amounts leave your grass clippings on your lawn. Increasing your mowing height and frequency of cutting will produce smaller grass clippings that will decompose more readily so nutrients are returned back into your lawn. Grass clippings are composed mostly of moisture, water! After you fertilize there are nutrients in your grass blades too. Leaving the clippings will reduce the amount of watering and keep the nutrients in your lawn for better feeding. Don’t throw away this value water and nutrients supply in garbage bags. Grass clippings do not increase the chance of thatch build up in your lawn. Excessive fertilizing creates thatch.
The other part of a beneficial lawn lies in the products you use to create and maintain your lawn. The first is quality Jonathan Green grass seed. Buy using newer, improved varieties like our Black Beauty Ultra Grass Seed Mixture you can reduce the need for fertilizing, watering, controls and improve drought and heat resistance. All of these factors help you use less water and fertilizer and chemicals to maintain a healthy lawn. Buying grass seed mixtures that contain endophytes, a natural living organism in the grass plant, helps to deter insects from chewing on the grass plants. Another excellent choice is Jonathan Green’s Sun and Shade Mixture. If you reduce the number of insects it also reduces the need for chemical insect controls.
There have been improved developments in the quality of fertilizers and control products that have come on the market over the last 25 years. Jonathan Green fertilizers are higher quality and stay on the lawn and reduce leaching in the soil and new chemistry utilizing less active ingredients have less impact on the environment. There are also Jonathan Green Organic products on the market to fertilize and controls weeds in your lawn.
