About Us
Our ancestor and founder, Jonathan Green, began experimenting with turf grass in England in 1881 to create lawn bowling greens in the border country between England and Scotland. He chose turf grass varieties with uniform leaf texture, good color, and superior wear tolerance, and went on to construct lush bowling greens in towns such as Chorley and Kirkby Malham in northern England. We continue to build on the foundation he laid years ago.
Today, Jonathan Green is a major supplier of grass seed, organics, and traditional fertilizer and weed, insect and disease control products to both independent retailers and professional lawn care markets. We also have our own turf grass breeding program where genetically superior turf grasses, such as those found in our Black Beauty® grass seed mixtures, have been developed.
When & What to Feed Your Lawn
Whether you have an established or newly seeded lawn, it will perform best when fed four times during the growing season from spring through fall, with each feeding applied 2 to 3 months apart using four different Jonathan Green products.
March or April – In early spring, apply Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer. This product will gently feed the lawn while helping it recover from winter and also control crabgrass before and after it germinates with the newest available technology, Dimension® Crabgrass Control Herbicide.
May or June – In late spring, we recommend the application of Veri-Green Weed & Feed Lawn Fertilizer. It will give your lawn everything it needs to grow green and strong and will also control dandelions, clover, and 250 other kinds of broadleaf weeds.
July or August – In summer, loosen up hard soil and adjust the pH level to make it ideal for grass growth. Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Alkaline & Hard Soil and Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Acidic & Hard Soil are designed to activate the microbial life in your soil to make the nutrients easier for grass roots to absorb.
September or October – In the fall, it’s time to get your lawn ready to survive the winter. Winter Survival Fall Lawn Fertilizer is designed to feed your lawn through winter while fending off late winter/early spring turf diseases, such as pink or gray snow mold. It also helps to keep the lawn a deep-green color.
All Year Long – You can also apply Jonathan Green Organic Lawn Food in spring, summer or fall on newly seeded and established lawns or when sodding. This complex, fully organic lawn fertilizer will provide excellent nutrition for your lawn for 8 to 10 weeks. It promotes strong grass growth and helps improve soil structure as well as the soil’s water holding capacity, making it the ideal choice for revitalizing thinning or stressed lawns.
