Eliminating Moss from Lawns

Weeds
4 min read

Aside from excessive shade, moss grows in lawns primarily because of compacted and very acidic soil, as well as the poor health of the grass. Eliminating it with the help of Lawn Moss Control from Jonathan Green will give your grass a better chance to grow and help you achieve a healthy, beautiful, moss-free lawn.

Jonathan Green has been revolutionizing the grass industry for over 100 years. We supply genetically superior grass seed, fertilizer, soil enhancers, and organic lawn and garden products to professional customers, such as sod growers and independent retailers, throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwestern, and, now, the Western United States.

All About Moss

Moss is a small green plant that has finely branched stems, tiny leaves, and shallow roots. Instead of drawing nutrients from the soil, the plants get some nutrients from water and make their own food through photosynthesis.

Moss spores are spread by the wind and only need moisture to germinate and mature. The plants can grow in virtually any type of soil, including conditions that even turfgrasses can’t endure. Some types of moss even like to grow in dry, sunny areas.

Moss will fill in the spaces where your grass is not growing well. You could rake it out and remove it from the lawn, but this is only a temporary solution. The most effective method of eliminating moss is to feed your grass plants and soil so that the grass will grow better.

How to Get Rid of Lawn Moss

Getting rid of lawn moss begins with understanding what is causing the moss to grow and what you can do to improve the soil conditions for your grass.

Apply Lawn Moss Control Jonathan Green’s Lawn Moss Control kills lawn moss quickly and can be used anytime. There is 50% more active ingredient in each 5,000 sq. ft. bag than other brands to provide more effective control. Lightly rake the lawn to remove leaves and dead grass. Mow moss-covered areas to fully expose the moss and allow the product to enter the soil more easily. Water after application to hasten the killing action.

Raise the Soil pH – Moss will thrive in low pH soil conditions. Test your soil with a Soil pH Test Kit for Lawns. If the result is lower than the optimal pH range of 6.2 to 7.0, apply our Mag-I-Cal® for Lawns in Acidic Soil to raise the pH. MAG-I-CAL® is a highly soluble form of calcium that can be applied at any time during the growing season. One bag equals about 5 bags of traditional pelletized lime and can be applied right before you lay down seed.

Break Up Soil Compaction – Once you balance the pH level of the soil, use Jonathan Green Love Your Soil® to loosen and aerate it, improve the drainage, and make it easier for grass plant roots to grow.  Love Your Soil® will also activate the microbes in the soil to make it easier for the roots to absorb nutrients, resulting in stronger, healthier grass.

Trim Back Tree Limbs – Grass plants need plenty of sunlight in order to photosynthesize and thrive properly. If too much shade is contributing to moss growth, encourage more sunlight by thinning tree limbs, and trimming back any other plants or bushes that surround the lawn.

Eliminating moss from lawns can be accomplished by correcting the soil conditions that invite it to grow. For more tips on how to produce a healthier, better-looking lawn, visit Jonathan Green online or your nearest retail store where you will get excellent lawn and garden advice.
