Healthy soils produce healthy lawns. Discover how often you should fertilize your lawn and the best times to do it from the knowledgeable team at Jonathan Green.

Jonathan Green has been growing beautiful, dark-green lawns since 1881.  We supply genetically superior cool-season grass seed and other lawn and soil care products to commercial sod growers and independent home and garden retailers in all areas of the United States where cool-season lawn grasses – Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass, and Fine Fescues – are grown.

We have also developed an environmentally sound and organic approach to lawn care called the New American Lawn Plan. By following this revolutionary plan, you will discover how to address the root of any lawn problems you have, instead of just battling the symptoms, such as insects and weeds. Our goal is to feed your lawn AND your soil to encourage your Black Beauty® lawn to thrive.

When to Feed the Lawn

During the spring through fall growing season, your lawn will perform best when fed three to four times – in spring, summer and fall – and this is true for both established lawns and newly seeded lawns..

If you struggle with crabgrass in your lawn year after year, create a better growing environment that enables desirable grass to grow in place of crabgrass. For good results, apply Jonathan Green Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer in spring. It controls crabgrass before and after it germinates and contains Dimension® Crabgrass Control Herbicide, the newest  technology. available. Dimension is clear, odorless, and colorless, and won’t stain your hands, walkways, driveways, or the floor of your garage.

If there are always dandelions and broadleaf weeds in your lawn, use Veri-Green Weed & Feed Lawn Fertilizer in late spring or fall when these weeds are actively growing. It will feed desirable grasses with 35% slow-release nitrogen fertilizer for up to 3 months and also kills weeds down to the root.

Early summer is a great time to feed your lawn organically because the soil is warm and the microbes are active. Apply Jonathan Green Organic Lawn Food because it contains food-grade organic ingredients such as feather meal, bone meal, blood meal, wheat shorts, and molasses.

Consider fertilizing your lawn in the fall to grow strong roots and fill in bare spots after summer damage. Jonathan Green Winter Survival Fall Lawn Fertilizer encourages deep rooting and quicker Veri-Green in spring. It also keeps your lawn greener later into the year.

To fertilize a newly seeded lawn, try Veri-Green Starter Fertilizer for Seeding & Sodding. It’s safe for new seeds and will help them sprout quickly to develop a strong root system and a thicker, fuller lawn. The formula contains 1% iron to fortify the grass and give it a deep shade of natural green color and 30% slow-release nitrogen to give the lawn the nutrients it needs in a time-released formula.
