If you are looking to quickly establish a lush lawn, explore the benefits of cool-season Perennial Ryegrass seed mixtures from the knowledgeable team at Jonathan Green.

Jonathan Green has been growing beautiful, dark-green lawns since 1881.  We supply genetically superior cool-season grass seed and other lawn and soil care products to commercial sod growers and independent home and garden retailers in all areas of the United States where cool-season lawn grasses – Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue, Perennial Ryegrass, and Fine Fescues – are grown.

We have also developed an environmentally sound and organic approach to lawn care called the New American Lawn Plan. By following this revolutionary plan, you will discover how to address the root of any lawn problems you have, instead of just battling the symptoms, such as insects and weeds. Our goal is to feed your lawn AND your soil to encourage your Black Beauty® lawn to thrive.

Our Ryegrass Seed Mixtures

You will typically find Perennial Ryegrass seed in mixtures that contain other cool season grasses. Ryegrass germinates fast and grows rapidly, but it can clump and cause a somewhat uneven turf surface if planted alone in a lawn.  Combining it with fine-leafed tall fescues and Kentucky Bluegrass, such as are found in most Black Beauty® seed mixtures, produces a smoother, more uniform looking looking lawn.

Jonathan Green’s Touch-Up™ TRI-RYE Perennial Ryegrass is a blend of three quick-germinating, top-performing, turf-type perennial ryegrasses, including Frontier Perennial Ryegrass, a very dark-green cultivar. The grasses also contain endophytes for natural insect resistance. Touch-Up™ can be used to repair stubborn bare spots or to overseed your entire lawn with this “golf course quality” seed. It thrives in compacted soils where heavy traffic is an issue and germinates very quickly (5 to 10 days).

Our Black Beauty® Sun & Shade Grass Seed mixture is our most popular grass seed mixture. It contains exclusive varieties of Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass, is endophyte-enhanced for improved insect resistance, and will grow a thick, dark-green lawn in both sun and partial shade areas.

Black Beauty® Heavy Traffic Grass Seed is a hardy mixture designed for tough areas with lots of foot traffic. The Tall Fescues and Perennial Ryegrasses offer quick cover and excellent abrasion resistance. It will be perfect anywhere that children and pets play and germinates in 10 to 14 days.

How to Care for Perennial Ryegrass

Irrigation: Ryegrass does not tolerate drought conditions as well as other turfgrasses and must be watered frequently to ensure its survival during long periods of hot, dry weather. During the summer, Perennial Ryegrass should be watered two to three times per week to a soil depth of 4-6 inches if there has been little rainfall.

Mowing: Perennial Ryegrass can easily grow to 2-feet high if left unattended. Consequently, you will have to mow it frequently to keep up with the growth (which will slow in the summer). The best height during the spring and fall growing seasons is from 2.5 to 3.5 inches tall. In the heat of summer, the height should be raised to at least 3 inches. Ryegrass lawns that are consistently mowed at lower heights will have shallower roots and will be the first to be affected by high heat or drought.
