Pre-Emergent Weed Control

Weeds Spring
3 min read

Crabgrass and other lawn weeds are symptoms of a weakened turf, so the best defense against more weeds is a thick, healthy lawn. Pre-emergent weed control products from Jonathan Green can stop the most common grassy and broadleaf weeds, including crabgrass and dandelions, before they sprout.

The Jonathan Green name has represented genetically superior grass seed, innovation, integrity, determination, and a commitment to excellence since 1881. Today, six generations later, we remain committed to producing superior lawn and garden products.

We supply grass seed mixtures, soil enhancers, fertilizer, and organic lawn and garden products to professional customers, such as sod growers and independent retailers, throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwestern and Western United States.

Pre-Emergent Herbicides

Pre-emergent herbicides are preventative. As the name suggests, they are targeted towards weeds that have not yet emerged from the soil.  Pre-emergent herbicides form a barrier at, or right below, the soil surface in order to attack weed seeds before they have a chance to germinate. Use a lawn spreader to apply them uniformly to your lawn, making sure not to miss any spots.

Jonathan Green Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer. If you don’t plan to do any seeding this spring, an early application of Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer can help to control and suppress 10+ broadleaf weeds all season, such as bittercress, chickweed, henbit, oxalis and more, as long as you apply it before the germination of these target weeds. It feeds lawns for up to three months and provides both pre– and post-emergent crabgrass control, even after the crabgrass has sprouted and emerged from the soil up to the third-leaf stage of growth. Mature crabgrass is a weed with seven leaves. The product can be applied as early as mid-March or as late as early June.

Jonathan Green Corn Gluten Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food. Organic Weed Preventer helps prevent the growth of grassy weeds (crabgrass, etc.) and certain broadleaf (dandelions, clover, chickweed, etc.). It contains a patented, highly concentrated corn gluten that prevents many of these common weeds and the weed control is so good that it rivals many synthetic herbicides. It will green up the lawn quickly and release organic proteins into the soil to encourage root development. Apply it to the lawn in the early spring and again in later spring, summer and fall, but do not apply grass seed for 60-90 days after spreading this product.

Some weeds are easy to control, but others can be a real challenge. Learn more about pre-emergent weed control by visiting Jonathan Green online or your nearest independent retail store.
