Ryegrass Seed

Seeding

At Jonathan Green, we think Perennial Ryegrass seed deserves more credit than it gets. Use it to establish lush lawns in relatively mild climates like the Upper Midwest, Northeast, and Pacific Northwest, overseed it into Southern lawns for winter color, or plant it as a nutritious pasture grass. It is also a beautiful turfgrass, is very tolerant of high traffic, and germinates rapidly.

The Jonathan Green name has represented genetically superior grass seed, innovation, integrity, determination, and a commitment to excellence since 1881. We supply grass seed, soil enhancers, fertilizer, and organic lawn and garden products to professional customers, such as sod growers and independent retailers, throughout the United States.

Jonathan Green Ryegrass Seed Mixtures

For lawn usage, Perennial Ryegrass is typically found in a mixture of other cool season grasses. Ryegrass germinates fast and grows rapidly but it can clump, which can cause a somewhat uneven turf surface if ryegrass is planted alone in a lawn.  Combining it with fine-leafed Fescues and Kentucky Bluegrass, such as are found in most Black Beauty® seed mixtures, produces a smoother looking lawn.

Jonathan Green’s Touch-Up™ TRI-RYE Perennial Ryegrass is a blend of three quick-germinating, top-performing, turf-type perennial ryegrasses, including Frontier Perennial Ryegrass, a very dark-green cultivar. The grasses also contain endophytes for natural insect resistance. Touch-Up™ can be used to repair stubborn bare spots or to overseed your entire lawn with this “golf course quality” seed mixture. It thrives in compacted soils where heavy traffic is an issue and germinates very quickly (5 to 10 days).

Our Black Beauty® Sun & Shade Grass Seed mixture is our most popular grass seed mixture. It contains exclusive varieties of Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass, is endophyte-enhanced for improved insect resistance, and will grow a thick, dark-green lawn in both sun and partial shade areas.

Black Beauty® Heavy Traffic Grass Seed seed is a hardy mixture designed for tough areas with lots of foot traffic. The Tall Fescues and Perennial Ryegrasses offer quick cover and excellent abrasion resistance. It will be perfect anywhere that children and pets play and germinates in 10 to 14 days.

Caring for Perennial Ryegrass

Irrigation: Ryegrass does not tolerate drought conditions as well as other turfgrasses and needs to be watered frequently to ensure its survival during extended periods of hot, dry weather. During the summer, Perennial Ryegrass should be watered two to three times per week to a soil depth of 6-12 inches if there has been little rainfall.

Mowing: Perennial Ryegrass can easily grow to 2-feet high if left unattended. Consequently, it will require frequent moving to keep up with the growth (which will slow in the summer) and can be mown quite close. The best height during the spring and fall growing seasons is from 2.5 to 3.5 inches tall. In the heat of summer, the height should be raised to at least 3 inches. Ryegrass lawns that are consistently mowed at lower heights will have shallower roots and will be the first to be affected by high heat or drought.
