When you are planning to plant grass seed in New Hampshire, make it easier on yourself by choosing the best time of year and products from Jonathan Green that will ensure the best results.

The Jonathan Green name has represented genetically superior grass seed, innovation, integrity, determination, and a commitment to excellence since 1881. Today, six generations later, we are industry leaders in organics and have developed an environmentally sound approach to lawn care called the New American Lawn Plan. The Plan combines our Black Beauty grass seed mixtures with organic and traditional soil amendments, lawn fertilizers and control products that feed your lawn AND your soil.

When to Plant

The ideal time to plant grass seed in New Hampshire is early fall (mid-September to mid-October). The soil is still warm at this time of year (55° to 65° F), which is necessary for optimum seed germination, and the cooler air temperatures and rainfall are better for grass growth. You will also have less competition from summer weeds, such as crabgrass. With adequate sunlight, rainwater and fertilizer, you can expect your new grass seedlings to be well-established and ready for winter.

What to Plant

Ideally a grass seed should consist of several varietals, be drought-, disease- and insect-resistant, and establish deep roots. Finding all these qualities in a grass seed is difficult, but Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Original Grass Seed does it all!

Black Beauty grass seed is specially formulated to have a waxy coating on the blades, similar to that of an apple. This coating makes the blades hold in moisture and makes the grass resistant to drought and diseases. Black Beauty grass seed is also endophytic, which means it’s naturally resistant to insects.

With roots that grow up to four feet deep, which is far deeper than other grass seeds, and blades of grass that are a gorgeous deep green, you won’t be disappointed when you choose Black Beauty grass seed.

How to Plant

Before you lay any seed down, the soil must be at the right pH and must be aerated and loosened to allow for proper root growth. Jonathan Green has two great products that can help get your soil ready for new grass seed.

Mag-I-Cal® for Lawns in Acidic Soil is specially formulated to quickly raise or lower your soil to the ideal pH range of between 6.2 and 7.0. For pH that falls below 6.2 use Mag-I-Cal® for Lawns in Acidic Soil . For pH that is above 7 use Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Alkaline & Hard Soil. (You can purchase a pH tester from any local hardware or garden supply store.)

Once you’ve addressed the soil pH, the soil needs to be loosened and aerated for best root growth. This can be done with Love Your Soil®. This innovative soil treatment activates the microbes within the soil. Once activated, the microbes allow for nutrients to be easily absorbed by the grass roots, resulting in stronger, heartier grass. Both of these products can be applied right before laying down new seed.
