Best Grass Seed for Colorado

4 min read

When you are looking for the best grass seed for Colorado, look no further than Black Beauty® seed mixtures from Jonathan Green.

Jonathan Green has been working for more than 100 years to bring beautiful dark-green lawns to our customers using only the highest quality materials. Since 1881, we have experimented with turfgrass varietals to breed our genetically superior grass seed. We are dedicated to providing you with the absolute best products, so all of them are rigorously tested to ensure that they perform to the highest standards.

The Best Grass Seed

For the best lawn you need the best seed. If at all possible, a grass seed should consist of several varietals, be disease-, insect-, and drought-resistant, and establish deep roots.

We recommend our genetically superior Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed. It is a mixture of elite and exclusive varieties of tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass.

Our genetically superior Black Beauty® grass seed creates a lawn full of grass that:

  • Has deep roots that can grow up to 4 feet deep for superior heat resistance;
  • Features an invisible waxy leaf coating that wards off disease and locks in moisture;
  • Is dark green, lush, and uniform;
  • Grows well in clay or sandy soils;
  • Grows well in both the sun and shade;
  • Is endophyte-bred for natural insect resistance.

Another excellent choice is Black Beauty® Fall Magic Grass Seed. This mixture is formulated for successful fall seeding and contains several grass types, including Black Beauty® tall fescues. It is ideal for planting a brand-new lawn or repairing a sparse, damaged lawn. Black Beauty® Fall Magic Grass Seed can be used in sun and shade lawn areas and germinates in 10 to 14 days.

Fertilize your newly seeded lawn with Jonathan Green Veri-Green Starter Fertilizer for Seeding & Sodding. It is safe for new seeds and will ensure that they sprout quickly and develop a strong root system.  It will feed your lawn for up to two months and develop a thicker, fuller lawn. Its formula contains 1% iron to fortify the grass and give it a deep shade of natural green color and 30% slow release nitrogen to give your lawn the nutrients it needs in a time-released formula.

When to Plant

In most parts of Colorado, cool-season grasses like Black Beauty can be seeded in March or April, as soon as temperatures begin to warm up.

Along the Front Range and Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains, the optimal time to plant is early fall (mid-August to mid-September). Warmer soil temperatures and consistent rainfall at this time of year encourage faster seed germination and deeper roots that will help the grass plants get established before winter sets in. You will also have less competition from summer weeds, such as crabgrass.
