Crabgrass Control

4 min read

Crabgrass is a coarse, light green, unattractive summer annual weed that will steal valuable moisture and nutrients from your soil and compete with your lawn grasses. Jonathan Green products will help you control this weed and help you to achieve a lush and vibrant lawn.

About Us

Jonathan Green supplies genetically superior cool season grass seed, soil enhancers, fertilizer, and organic lawn and garden products to professional customers, such as sod growers and independent retailers, throughout the United States.

We are also leaders in organics and have developed an environmentally sound approach to lawn care called the New American Lawn Plan. The Plan combines our Black Beauty grass seed mixtures with organic and traditional soil amendments, lawn fertilizers and control products that feed your lawn AND your soil so air, water and nutrients get absorbed by the grass.

How Much Do You Know About Crabgrass?

Native to Africa, crabgrass was introduced to North America by European settlers in the 1800’s as an animal feed. It is relentlessly prolific and can produce more than 150,000 seeds per plant. The seeds start to germinate when soil temperatures reach about 55-57 degrees Fahrenheit, and the plants really spread in lawns in July and August.

Although crabgrass will die with the first frost (usually October), the plants will produce seed heads during late summer to ensure a new crop of crabgrass plants the following year. Until you break the cycle of the seeds turning into seedlings, they will lay dormant in the soil until spring and jump into action again.

A sound crabgrass strategy involves interrupting the germination of crabgrass seeds in the spring, ideally in April or May. You can accomplish this by introducing grass seed to thin areas of your lawn, applying a crabgrass preventer (pre-emergent herbicide), and following our New American Lawn Plan.

Crabgrass Prevention and Control

Jonathan Green Corn Gluten Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food is an organic pre-emergent that contains a patented, highly concentrated corn gluten. It stops the most common grassy and broadleaf weeds, including crabgrass and dandelions, before they sprout and includes an organic fertilizer that greens up the lawn quickly. It also releases organic proteins into the soil to encourage root development. Apply it in early spring, but do not sow grass seed for at least 60 days, with the best new grass establishment occurring when seeding is done 90 days later.

Jonathan Green Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer contains the newest technology named Dimension® Crabgrass Control Herbicide. This product controls crabgrass before and after it germinates (up to the 3-leaf stage of growth; crabgrass is a 7-leaf plant when mature) and can be applied up to four weeks later than other crabgrass preventers.

Dimension is clear and odorless so no staining of sidewalks, shoes or fences will occur. Veri-Green Lawn Food with Crabgrass Preventer will feed your lawn gently for up to 8 weeks, but do not seed with this product. The Dimension will also kill your grass seedlings as they germinate.
