How to Kill Crabgrass

Weeds
4 min read

The experts at Jonathan Green offer tips on how to kill crabgrass and weeds in your lawn, protect it against damage from insects and diseases, and help you achieve a lush and vibrant lawn.

Who is Jonathan Green?

For six generations, Jonathan Green has been committed to producing superior lawn and garden products. We supply genetically superior grass seed, soil enhancers, and fertilizer to professional customers, such as sod growers and independent retailers, throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern United States, and Western states in 2019.

We are also leaders in organics and have developed an environmentally sound approach to lawn care called the New American Lawn Plan. The Plan combines our Black Beauty grass seed mixtures with a family of organic and traditional soil amendments, lawn fertilizers and control products that feed your lawn AND your soil.

Crabgrass Prevention and Control

Jonathan Green Corn Gluten Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food is an organic pre-emergent that contains a patented, highly concentrated corn gluten. It stops the most common grassy and broadleaf weeds, including crabgrass and dandelions, before they sprout and includes an organic fertilizer that greens up the lawn quickly. It also releases organic proteins into the soil to encourage root development. Apply it in early spring, but do not sow grass seed for at least 60 to 90 days.

Jonathan Green Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer contains the newest technology with Dimension® Crabgrass Control Herbicide. This product controls crabgrass before and after it germinates (up to the 3-leaf stage of growth; crabgrass is a 7-leaf plant when mature) and can be applied up to four weeks later than other crabgrass preventers. It will feed your lawn gently for up to 8 weeks; however, do not seed with this product.

Fight Crabgrass with a Healthy Lawn

Lawn weeds are symptoms of a weakened turf, not the cause of it.   Thin turf, bare spots, and poor growth are the key problems that allow weeds to invade desirable turf areas. The reasons include:

  1. Planting of inferior turf varieties.
  2. Poor soil management, such as improper pH readings, soil compaction, and lack of organic matter.
  3. Bad turf management practices, like inadequate fertilizer programs which greatly overuse synthetic, high-nitrogen “lawn foods” only.
  4. Physical damage caused by low mowing height or excessive wear patterns mainly caused by equipment activity.

Keep in mind that weed seeds can remain dormant in soil for years, waiting for the proper environment to grow. Tilling the soil, while creating a nice seed bed, brings dormant and buried weed seeds to the surface.  Top soil has weed seed in it and even wind carries weed seeds. A healthy lawn is your first – and best – line of defense against crabgrass and other weeds.
