Two of Jonathan Green’s most popular grass seed mixtures are:
- Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed This seed mixture is most similar to what is found on sod farms. It possesses species diversity and contains exclusive, elite varieties of Black Beauty Tall Fescues, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass. These grasses grow a naturally dark-green and beautiful lawn with excellent heat and drought tolerance. Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed germinates in 7 to 14 days.
- Black Beauty® Sun & Shade Grass Seed – This is our most popular grass seed mixture. It contains exclusive varieties of Black Beauty Tall Fescues, Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass, is endophyte-enhanced for improved insect resistance, and will grow a thick, dark-green lawn in both sun and partial shade areas. This seed germinates in 7 to 14 days.
The Best Shade-Tolerant Grass Seed
Growing a lawn in the shade can be challenging. If you can’t trim or remove trees to allow more sunlight in the area, we highly recommend using a grass seed mixture designed for the shade, such as Jonathan Green Shady Nooks or Dense Shade.
For dense shade areas, Jonathan Green has developed our own Black Beauty® Dense Shade Grass Seed. This blend consists of several different shade-tolerant grass seed varieties, including Black Beauty® turf-type tall fescue grasses, and naturally insect-resistant varieties that deter pests. It can thrive in medium shaded areas and in areas with up to 70% shade. It is able to establish in dry or sandy soils where other grass seeds have failed, but grows best in drier soils.
Our most shade-tolerant turfgrass mixture is Black Beauty® Shady Nooks Grass Seed, the most shade-tolerant turfgrass mixture on the market. It survives well in either damp or dry soils, of up to 90% deep shade, where other grasses fail. Shady Nooks seed grows well right up to the base of trees, and requires less fertilizer.
Spring Fertilizer Solutions
Apply Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer in early spring. It controls crabgrass before and after it germinates and contains the newest technology available, named Dimension® Crabgrass Control Herbicide. Dimension® is clear, odorless and colorless, and won’t stain your hands, walkways, driveways, or the floor of your garage.
Apply Veri-Green Weed & Feed Lawn Fertilizer in late spring. This combination of lawn food and weed control feeds lawns for up to three months and will tackle more than 250 broadleaf weeds, including dandelions, chickweed, plantain, and clover, with a three-way herbicide formula that kills weeds down to the root.
