When to Fertilize Lawn in Spring

Fertilizing Spring
3 min read

A healthy lawn should be fertilized several times during the year. Find out when to fertilize your lawn in spring and which products you should use to make sure your lawn gets what it needs to fight environmental stress.

The Jonathan Green company is built upon innovative scientific research and time-honored traditions. We have studied turfgrass and what it needs to thrive since 1881, developing products that provide lasting results year after year. Currently, we use the latest scientific technology to test all of our products to make sure they will perform well on your lawn. The result will be a beautiful green, healthy lawn for you and your family.

Spring Lawn Feeding

March or April – Early spring is the ideal time to apply Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer. It features the newest technology, Dimension® Crabgrass Control Herbicide, that will control crabgrass all season long. It also provides the nutrients required for a beautiful, green, thick lawn. Veri-Green Lawn Food can be applied up to four weeks later than other crabgrass preventers. Apply it to a dry lawn before a rain, and water it in after application. When applied in late summer through early fall, it also helps to control annual bluegrass (Poa annua) when it first germinates.

May or June – You should apply Veri-Green Weed & Feed Lawn Fertilizer in late spring. Not only will this product give your lawn everything it needs to grow green and strong, but it will also control clover, dandelion, and more than 250 types of hard-to-kill broadleaf weeds. Apply Veri-Green Weed & Feed to moist grass. Don’t water treated areas for 48 hours after application because water will wash off the weed-killing material. Avoid applying if rain is expected within 48 hours after treatment.

Early and Late Spring – Jonathan Green Corn Gluten Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food helps prevent the growth of certain broadleaf weeds (dandelions, clover, chickweed, etc.) and grassy weeds (crabgrass, etc.). The patented, highly concentrated corn gluten it is made of works as well as many synthetic crabgrass control herbicides. Organic Weed Preventer will quickly green up the lawn and release organic proteins into the soil to encourage root development. Apply this fertilizer with weed control in the early spring and again in later spring, summer, and fall, but do not seed the lawn for 60-90 days after application.

When your lawn and soil are in harmony, the natural balance is restored, and this will protect your lawn against most insects, weeds, and turf diseases, and improve the heat and cold tolerance of your grass. The soil will become more permeable and alive with beneficial microbial organisms, allowing water, air and grass roots to penetrate into the soil more deeply, establishing a better foundation for the grass to flourish.

At Jonathan Green, we are delighted to answer any questions you have to help you care for your lawn. When you need more information about when to fertilize your lawn in spring or other times of the year, visit us online or ask in person at your local independent garden center or hardware store.
