When to Overseed Lawn in Pennsylvania

4 min read

When your lawn in Pennsylvania is suffering from weeds, brown spots, bare areas or has deteriorated due to age, it may be time to overseed and spruce it up. With advice from the turf professionals at Jonathan Green, you can have a beautiful lawn that’s the envy of the neighborhood!

Jonathan Green is a leading supplier of top-quality cool season grass seed, soil enhancers, fertilizer, and organic lawn and garden products to sod growers and independent retailers, including garden centers and hardware stores, throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern United States.

Proud of a six-generation history in turfgrass dating back to 1881, when the founder Jonathan Green developed turf grass varieties with uniform leaf texture, color, and superior wear tolerance to improve the quality of lawn bowling surfaces in towns all over northern England, we continue to build on the foundation he laid generations ago.

Overseeding in Pennsylvania

Overseeding can increase the thickness and density of your grass, protect it against damage from insects and diseases, and help you achieve a lush and vibrant lawn.

In Pennsylvania, early fall is the best time to do this. Soil temperatures in the fall are still warm, which encourages seed germination, and cooler air temperatures are better for grass growth. There are also fewer active lawn diseases in the fall, and weed growth tapers off. This means your grass won’t have to compete for nutrients, water and sunshine.

With the right amount of moisture, fertilizer, and sunlight, your new grass will have two to three months to get established before lower winter temperatures slow its growth. It will also have the benefit of two cool growing cycles before the heat of summer sets in.

First Things First

It’s important to properly prepare your soil before overseeding. It must be free of compaction, possess healthy microbial populations, and have the correct pH, or your quest for a great lawn won’t happen.

The Jonathan Green New American Lawn Plan is a cutting-edge lawn care program that provides everything you need to know to keep your grass and soil healthy, well-nourished and ready to support new growth.

Choose the Finest Grass Seed

Your lawn will never be better than the seed you plant, so we recommend overseeding with either Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed mixture or Black Beauty® Fall Magic Grass Seed mixture:

  • Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed is most similar to what is found on sod farms. The mixture possesses species diversity and contains exclusive, elite varieties of tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass.  These grasses grow a naturally dark-green and beautiful lawn with excellent heat and drought tolerance.  Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed germinates in about 14 days and will improve any lawn it is overseeded into.
  • Black Beauty® Fall Magic Grass Seed has been specially formulated for successful fall seeding and contains several grass types, including Black Beauty® tall fescues. It can be used in sun and shade lawn areas to overseed established lawns or to start new lawns from scratch. Black Beauty® Fall Magic Grass Seed repairs summer damage and provides an attractive, thicker, greener lawn, with germination in 10 to 14 days.
