Overseeding Your Virginia Lawn
Overseeding, also called reseeding, means adding more grass plants to an existing lawn without removing the turf or the soil. It will increase the lawn’s thickness and density, protect it against damage from insects and diseases, and help you achieve a lush and vibrant lawn.
In Virginia, early fall is the best time to overseed your lawn. Soil temperatures in the fall are still warm, which promotes optimum seed germination, and cooler air temperatures are better for grass growth. Warm-season weeds are also much less active at this time of year.
With the right amount of moisture, fertilizer, and sunlight, your new grass will have two to three months to establish itself before lower winter temperatures stop its growth.
Choosing a Grass Seed
All grass seeds are not the same. For the best results, you will need to choose a grass seed that is appropriate for the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as one of high quality.
