How can we help?

When do I plant grass seed?

Answer:

Determining when to plant grass seed is dependent on two things: the type of grass seed you have and the climate you live in.

If you have cool-season grass seed, the most ideal time to plant is in the fall, from mid-August to mid-October, and preferably when daytime temperatures are between 60ºF to 75ºF and night temperatures are no lower than 50ºF. The combination of warm soil temperatures and frequent precipitation make this season perfect for seeding a new lawn or overseeding an established one. During the fall season, plan to plant cool-season grass seed at least 45 days before your first fall frost and before soil and air temperatures drop to less favorable levels.

“But what if I missed this window to plant grass seed?”

While fall is primarily the best time to plant grass seed, you can still plant cool-season grasses in the spring, specifically mid-March to mid-May.
