Best Grass Seed for Massachusetts
Your lawn in Massachusetts will never be better than the grass seed you plant. Jonathan Green Black Beauty® seed mixtures are the best choice and will transform every aspect of your lawn to help it thrive like never before.
Jonathan Green has specialized in beautiful lawns since 1881. Six generations of the family have worked to bring beautiful dark-green lawns to homeowners using only the highest quality traditional and organic products. We have experimented with turfgrass varietals to breed our genetically superior turf grasses, such as those found in our Black Beauty® grass seed mixtures.
We are also leaders in organics and have developed an environmentally sound approach to lawn care called the New American Lawn Plan. The Plan combines our Black Beauty® grass seed mixtures with organic and traditional soil amendments, lawn fertilizers and control products that feed your lawn AND your soil so air, water and nutrients get absorbed by the grass.
When to Plant Grass Seed in Massachusetts
Early fall is the best time to plant grass seed in Massachusetts. At this time of year, soil temperatures are still warm, which is necessary for optimum seed germination, while cooler air temperatures are better for grass growth. Adequate sunlight will enable the new grass to become established before colder winter weather arrives, and there will be fewer weeds for the grass to compete with.
The second-best time for planting cool-season grass seed in Massachusetts is spring (mid-March to late April). Spring sunshine and rain contribute to strong grass growth, but be sure that daytime temperatures have warmed up to 55° to 60°F before you start. The surface soil temperature must be a consistent 55°F for five to seven days for seed to germinate. Grass Seed must also be raked in to the top ¼ inch of the soil. This creates a seed bed and establishes good seed to soil contact which aids in germination.
Seeding & Feeding
Whether you decide to plant in spring or fall, we recommend our Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed mixture. It is genetically superior to other grass seed, is heat and drought resistant, and grows roots up to four feet deep. It has a waxy leaf coating (like an apple) that helps it seal in moisture. It also grows naturally dark-green turf that is most similar to the Black Beauty® seed mixtures sod growers purchase from us to grow high-quality sod within one year.
We also recommend using a fertilizer that is specially made for newly seeded grass. Generic fertilizers or weed and feed treatments could include chemicals that would prevent proper seed germination. Jonathan Green has put decades of innovation and technology into creating our Veri-Green Starter Fertilizer for Seeding & Sodding. The formula promotes fast seed germination and works to build a vigorous root system.
