Can Grass Seed Survive Freezing?

Winter
4 min read

Grass seed on its own is resilient and can survive freezing. However, that does not mean it is a good idea to plant your grass seeds in winter. It is best to put down grass seed at a time when it is mostly likely to germinate and grow into strong, sturdy grass.

Put Down Grass Seed to Avoid Freezing

Whether you choose cool season or warm season grass seed, it is important to plant the seeds before frost. For cool season grass, make sure to plant at least 45 days before expected frost, usually in early fall. If an unexpected frost comes, that does not mean the seeds are ruined. Grass seed that has not sprouted will simply lay dormant in the soil until the temperature is right. The problem is when the grass seed has begun to sprout. Grass seedlings are not strong enough to survive a frost. Grass seed typically takes a few weeks to sprout and then several more weeks before it is strong enough to withstand frost. Paying attention to the recommended planting guide on your grass seed will help you determine the best time plant your grass seed and the best products to use. We recommend Jonathan Green Black Beauty grass seed.

Why Black Beauty Grass Seed?

Black Beauty grass seed is the culmination of generations of work by the Jonathan Green family. Since 1881, Jonathan Green has specialized in high quality grass and turf products that are the result of tireless research and innovation. Growers around the country rely on Black Beauty grass seed for strong healthy grass that is a rich dark green color. Black Beauty grass seed is genetically enhanced to develop stronger roots of up to four feet deep. The grass also develops a waxy coating that is similar to what you would find on an apple. This waxy coating helps the grass maintain moisture and provides a natural resistance against disease. This blend is great for clay or sandy soils and grows in full or partial shade conditions.

How to Care for Your Lawn

Once your lawn has sprouted and begun to grow, you’ll want to maintain your lawn throughout the year to make sure that it stays lush and green.

March/April – In early spring you want to put down Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer. This specialized formula prevents crabgrass from growing and treats crabgrass that might already be in your lawn. It also feeds your lawn to keep it healthy and green for three months.

May/June – In late spring you will want to apply a good quality weed and feed. This will not only feed your lawn the nutrients it needs over the summer but kills weeds that are actively growing. Apply to a damp lawn so the weed control sticks to the leaf and is absorbed.  We recommend Jonathan Green’s Veri-Green Weed and Feed.

July/August – In late summer you’ll want to get your soil’s pH to the optimal level for grass health and growth. That is why recommend applying MAG-I-CAL. This specialized product activates the microbes in the soil to make them easier for your grass to absorb, resulting in stronger, healthier grass.

September/October – In fall it is time to put down Winter Survival. This will give your grass everything it needs to fend off disease and get the nutrients it needs over the long winter. Remember that even though your grass seed can survive freezing, it is always best to put down seed during its optimal growing time.
