About Crabgrass Preventer
Crabgrass seeds typically begin to germinate when the soil warms up to between 55°F and 70°F. Depending on your climate, this is between early spring and mid-summer.
Crabgrass preventer is a pre-emergent herbicide, which means you must use it before the crabgrass seeds have sprouted. Pre-emergent herbicides form a barrier at, or right below, the soil surface. Use a lawn spreader to apply the preventer uniformly to your lawn, making sure not to miss any spots.
We recommend Jonathan Green Corn Gluten Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food, an organic pre-emergent that contains a patented, highly concentrated corn gluten. It stops the most common grassy and broadleaf weeds, including crabgrass and dandelions, before they sprout and includes an organic fertilizer that greens up the lawn quickly. It also releases organic proteins into the soil to encourage root development. Apply it in early spring, but do not sow grass seed for at least 60 to 90 days.
Another excellent product is Jonathan Green Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer. It contains the newest technology with Dimension® Crabgrass Control Herbicide. This product controls crabgrass before and after it germinates (up to the 3-leaf stage of growth; crabgrass is a 7-leaf plant when mature) and can be applied up to four weeks later than other crabgrass preventers. It will feed your lawn gently for up to 8 weeks; however, do not seed with this product.
Tips:
- Crabgrass does not grow in shade. To reduce your use of the crabgrass preventer, apply it only to sunny areas of your lawn.
