Types of Turfgrass
When planning your lawn, you will have to decide on the type of grass you want to grow – cool-season or warm-season grasses. Your success will depend on selecting the right grass seed for your location.
- Cool-season grasses include Perennial Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescues, and Fine Fescues, and they dominate the cooler northern regions of the country. They thrive in air temperatures of 65-80°F and grow rapidly in the spring and fall. Cool-season grasses are drought-tolerant and very hardy.
- Warm-season grasses include Bahia, Bermuda, Centipede, St. Augustine, and Zoysia and grow most actively in the warmer areas of the country. They prefer air temperatures in the 75-90°F range. These grasses achieve their peak growth in summer and become dormant and turn brown during the cooler seasons.
Diversity Matters
Grass seed needs diversity to create a thick and hearty lawn – the more diversity in the seed, the stronger and lusher the grass that grows from it. For example, Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed contains species diversity and includes our most elite Black Beauty® Tall Fescue seed varieties, our best Kentucky Bluegrass, and premium Perennial Ryegrass. This grass grows a lush dark-green lawn in full sun to partial shade. It germinates in 7 to 14 days.
Another great option is our Black Beauty® Sunny Grass Seed which helps create a long-lasting, high-quality lawn in stressful, sunny growing conditions. Black Beauty® Sunny contains Black Beauty Tall Fescues and the highest-rated, endophytic turfgrass varieties that deter damage from insects. It grows well in full sun, germinates in 10 to 14 days, and is deeply rooted for superior drought tolerance.

Drought Survival Tips for Your Lawn
A healthy growing lawn will be your best defense against drought conditions. Seeding your lawn with drought-tolerant grasses is important. Tall Fescues, such as Black Beauty®, tend to hold up very well since they can grow deep root systems and, once established, don’t require much water. Seed in early fall to allow your lawn to become established and strong enough to combat the upcoming summer’s heat waves and drought conditions
Dethatching should be done when your lawn is in its peak growing period. For cool-season grasses, such as Black Beauty® turf grasses, this will be during the late summer or early fall. Thatch, which is dead organic matter, reduces the turf’s tolerance to cold, drought, and heat stress, increases its susceptibility to lawn diseases and fungus, and robs the soil of its ability to absorb water, oxygen, and nutrients efficiently.
