Sun Lovers: Tall Fescues & Kentucky Bluegrass
There are two types of cool-season grasses that are perfect choices for tolerating hot summers and full sun – tall fescues and Kentucky bluegrass.
Tall fescues are cool-season grasses that have been the preferred grass seed in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states for nearly 30 years and the Midwest and far-western states like California for the last ten years. Thanks to a deep root system, they are adaptable to a wide range of climates, are disease resistant, and tolerate cold, heat, drought, and shade very well. Tall fescues require at least four hours of direct sun per day to survive. They have a very deep root system, giving them excellent drought tolerance.
Kentucky bluegrass makes a stunning lawn that tolerates shade but requires at least eight hours of direct sun to survive. It is vulnerable to weeds and diseases during summer and in generally hot climates and requires at least 2” of water per week – twice as much as tall fescue. Not quite as drought tolerant as tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass will go dormant during dry spells to conserve its energy.

It can withstand sweltering temperatures up to 100°F.
Black Beauty® Sunny Grass Seed is a grass seed mixture that helps create a long-lasting, high-quality lawn in stressful, sunny growing conditions. Black Beauty® Sunny contains Black Beauty Tall Fescues and the highest-rated, endophytic turfgrass varieties that deter damage from insects. It grows well in full sun, germinates in 10 to 14 days, and is deeply rooted for superior drought tolerance.
