Best Grass Seed for Missouri
At Jonathan Green we have been revolutionizing the grass industry for over 100 years. Six generations of our family have worked to create superior lawn and garden products. When you need the best grass seed to plant in Missouri, we can help.
What to Plant
A high-quality grass seed is essential for a strong healthy lawn. Jonathan Green Black Beauty® grass seed is a mix of the best varietals of cool season grasses and results in leaves that are dark green, lush, and uniform in texture. The seed produces grass that is drought resistant and grows well in both sun and shade. It can be used in both clay and sandy soil.
When to Plant
There are two times of the year that are suitable for planting cool season grass seed in Missouri.
Late August to mid-October
This is the best time in Missouri for planting grass seed, with early September being ideal. At this time of year, the soil is still warm so grass seed germinates faster. Additionally, weed development is less of a problem and the newly established grass will have two seasons of optimum growth before facing a hot summer.
March to mid-June
If you prefer not to wait until fall, you can seed your lawn between March and mid-June as well The weather is still cool enough for the seeds to germinate and there is ordinarily no danger of a drought affecting the new sprouts. You may experience competition from weeds trying to crowd out the new sprouts, especially crabgrass.
To prevent this, apply Jonathan Green Crabgrass Preventer plus New Seeding Lawn Fertilizer on the same day you sow grass seed. This pre-emergent herbicide prevents crabgrass and grassy weeds from germinating without injuring new grass seedlings. It contains 30% slow-release nitrogen to feed the new seedlings gently and longer.
How to Plant
When soil is compacted or too acidic, air, water, and nutrients are unable to reach the roots, making it very difficult for grass to flourish. Jonathan Green has two great products that can help get your soil ready for new grass seed.
MAG-I-CAL® Plus is specially formulated to rapidly raise or lower your soil pH to the ideal range of between 6.2 and 7.0. It is available for acidic soil or alkaline soil. Plan to use it every season to keep your soil biology and chemistry balanced. (You can purchase a pH tester from any local hardware or garden supply store.)
Once you’ve addressed the soil pH, the soil needs to be loosened and aerated for best root growth. This can be done with Love Your Soil®. This innovative soil treatment activates the microbes within the soil. Once activated, the microbes allow for nutrients to be easily absorbed by the grass roots, resulting in stronger, heartier grass. Both of these products can be applied right before laying down new seed.
