How Long to Water Lawn After Fertilizing

Fertilizing
4 min read

The key to fertilizing your lawn properly is choosing the right fertilizer for each season and knowing how long to water the lawn after you’ve fed it. Jonathan Green’s New American Lawn Care Plan is an easy way to know when and what to feed and water your lawn and how to do it.

At Jonathan Green, lush green lawns are our business. We have been perfecting the art of green lawns since 1881 and have continued this tradition for six generations. We employ the latest scientific technology and research to ensure that we have the best products on the market, so you end up with a strong, healthy, dark-green lawn.

Seasonal Lawn Feeding

There are four times of the year that you should feed your lawn and four different products you will want to use.

Early Spring – In March or April, apply Veri-Green Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Fertilizer. It contains the newest technology, Dimension® Crabgrass Control Herbicide, which will prevent any crabgrass from creeping into your lawn. It also provides the nutrients needed for a beautiful, green, thick lawn. To be effective, the product needs to be activated by rainfall or sprinkler irrigation. Apply it to a dry lawn before a rain, or water it in after application.

Late Spring – In May and June, you should apply Veri-Green Weed & Feed Lawn Fertilizer. This product will not only give your lawn everything it needs to grow green and strong, it also controls dandelions, clover and over 250 other kinds of broadleaf weeds. Apply Veri-Green Weed & Feed Lawn Fertilizer to moist grass because the weed control granules work best when they stick to the weed leaves for a few hours. Avoid watering treated areas for 48 hours after application because water will wash off the weed-killing material. Do not apply if rainfall is expected within 48 hours of treatment.

Summer – In July and August, you want to loosen up hard soil and adjust its pH level to make it optimal for grass growth. Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Alkaline & Hard Soil and Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Acidic & Hard Soil are specially designed to activate the microbial life in your soil to make the nutrients easier for grass roots to absorb. Apply to a dry lawn before a rain or water in after application.

Fall – In September and October, you need to get your lawn ready to survive the winter. Winter Survival Fall Lawn Fertilizer is designed to keep your lawn fed through the winter while fending off late winter/early spring turf diseases such as pink or gray snow mold. The well-balanced formula also helps to keep the lawn a deep-green color. For the best results, apply Winter Survival to a dry lawn before a rain or water in after application.

Rule of Thumb for Watering: If the Jonathan Green product you choose contains a broadleaf weed killer, it should be applied to damp grass but should not be watered in. (The weed killer must sit on the leaf in order to take effect.) If the product does not contain a broadleaf weed killer, you may water it in after application. All other products do not have to be watered in, but will activate faster if watered in or rained on.
