When Should I Seed My Lawn?

“When should I seed my lawn,” is a frequently asked question at Jonathan Green. Our experts are here to help.

For more than 100 years, Jonathan Green has helped bring beautiful dark-green lawns to our clients using only the highest quality materials. Since 1881, we have experimented with turfgrass varietals to breed our genetically superior grass seed. We are dedicated to providing our clients with the absolute best, so all of our products are rigorously tested to ensure that they perform to the highest standards.

When to Seed Your Lawn

Early fall is typically the best time to seed your lawn with our cool-season grass seeds. The soil is warm, air temperatures are cooler, autumn rains are more plentiful, and weeds are less active, creating an excellent environment for seed germination before leaves start falling and the winter cold arrives.

With the right amount of moisture, fertilizer, and sunlight, your new grass seedlings will have the benefit of two cool growing cycles before the heat of summer sets in. The newly planted grass will be able to grow and develop roots right up to Christmas if conditions are right.

Which Seed Should You Choose?

If you want the best-looking grass in the neighborhood, be sure to choose the highest quality grass seed. Jonathan Green Black Beauty® grass seed mixtures look and feel so much like Kentucky Bluegrass that even the pros have a hard time distinguishing Black Beauty® from Bluegrass.

Jonathan Green Black Beauty® grass seeds are:

  • Deeply rooted (up to 4 feet)
  • Disease resistant
  • Drought tolerant because of the invisible waxy leaf coating that preserves moisture in the plant (similar to the wax on an apple).
  • Naturally dark green in color
  • Uniform in leaf size and texture
  • Contain Endophytes for natural insect resistance

Prepare the Soil

Before you lay any seed down, the soil must be at the right pH and must be aerated and loosened to promote proper root growth. Jonathan Green has two terrific products that can help get your soil ready for new grass seed.

Mag-I-Cal® for Lawns in Acidic Soil is specially formulated to quickly raise or lower your soil to the ideal pH range of between 6.2 and 7.0. For pH that falls below 6.2, use Mag-I-Cal® for Lawns in Acidic Soil. For pH that is above 7.0, use Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Alkaline & Hard Soil. (You can purchase a pH tester from any hardware or garden supply store in your area.)

Once you have addressed the soil pH, the soil needs to be loosened and aerated for best root growth. This can be done with Love Your Soil®. This innovative soil treatment activates the microbes within the soil. Once activated, the microbes allow for nutrients to be easily absorbed by the grass roots, resulting in stronger, heartier grass. Both of these products can be applied right before laying down new seed.

We also recommend Veri-Green Starter Fertilizer for Seeding & Sodding to encourage your new grass seed grow quicker and thicker. The high-phosphorus formula helps to build a vigorous root system, gets new grass plantings off to a fast start for a thicker, greener lawn, and will continue feeding your lawn for up to two months.
