What is K-31 Tall Fescue?

Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue, often referred to as K-31, is a cool-season grass variety that is used in lawns, pastures, and other grassy areas. This is an older variety of fescue. It is known for its hardiness and adaptability to a wide range of soil types and growing conditions. Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue is a coarse-textured grass with a dark green color. It typically forms bunches or clumps rather than spreading by rhizomes or stolons. It is rough to touch and has multiple veins per large blade.

It’s important to note that there are newer cultivars of tall fescue available that have been selectively bred for improved appearance, texture, and performance like Jonathan Green Black Beauty grass seed. Homeowners and landscapers may prefer these improved varieties for more aesthetically pleasing lawns. K-31 is still in use as an industrial plant and does very well in sandy soils. It will survive where other varieties won’t.  Because it is a grass plant, to kill it you will have to use a non-selective spray.
