Jonathan Green Contractor’s Grass Seed Mixture is the ideal grass seed for soil stabilization or temporary lawn seeding. Contractor’s Mix contains annual ryegrass so it germinates quickly and provides a fast grass cover. It is most often used by new home builders to establish a lawn quickly because it provides an excellent value for the price. Contractor’s Grass Seed Mixture can be overseeded with any Black Beauty® Grass Seed Mixture to grow a lawn that will persist for years to come. This seed germinates in 7 – 10 days.
For the best results, follow the directions below for establishing a new lawn or overseeding an existing one.
Prepare:
- Mow – Mow the lawn at the lowest mower setting before seeding to allow the seed to reach the soil.
- Rake – Rake over the existing grass with a metal rake to remove the thatch layer and any debris to loosen the soil. Add additional topsoil to fill in holes and level the ground.
- Check soil pH level – Have a soil test taken to check your soil’s pH level. The optimum soil pH should be between 6.2 to 7.0. For a pH below 6.2 use Jonathan Green MAG-I-CAL® Plus for Acidic & Hard Soil to rapidly increase pH. If the pH is above 7.0 use MAG-I-CAL® Plus for Alkaline & Hard Soil to rapidly decrease the soil pH.
Seed:
- When to apply – The best time to apply seed is mid-August to mid-October while the ground is still warm and the nights are cooler. Mid-March through mid-May is the next best time to plant when the soil temperature reaches 55º+ Fahrenheit and the temperature of the air stays consistently warm.
- Spread seed – Apply half of the seed with a rotary spreader in one direction (north to south) and the remainder in the opposite direction (east to west). It is beneficial to spread a new seeding fertilizer that is high in phosphorus at this time as well.
- Rake seed – Rake lightly into the ground with a metal rake. Walk with light, even footsteps on the seedbed to firm the soil around the seed. Do not bury the seed more than one-fourth of an inch deep.
Maintain:
- Water – For best germination, water daily to keep the seedbed moist. Continue watering regularly for a few weeks until the grass plants reach a height of 2 – 2.5 inches.
- Mow – Begin mowing when the new grass has reached a height of 3 – 4 inches. Make sure the mower has sharp blades. Be careful not to scalp the lawn, low mowing will stress the root system and encourage the growth of weeds.
Coverage:
- 25 lb Bag
-
- Overseeding – Seeds up to 6,500 sq. ft.
- New Lawns – Seeds up to 3,250 sq. ft.
- 50 lb Bag

Senior citizen .Price is much too high.
I planted this in October of 2021. Had a beautiful dark green color until December (I think I should have done soil tests etc to keep it green). It’s mid June and temps are in mid 90’s everyday. I did finally do a soil test about 4 weeks ago and applied some fertilizer and lime a few weeks ago after getting the results. It greened up but isn’t looking as good as it was in the fall. I’m hoping to really hit it with fertilizer in the fall to get it going again! We’ll see.
I recently applied this, and it killed all the clover. I know this because if I missed a spot, the clover remained. I downgraded it one star because it didn’t cover 15000 square feet
It works but u have to be patient. I applied it to kill broadleaf weeds. It took about 3-4 weeks. Now I am seeing the weeds dying. You must follow the instructions.
Just moved and the yards were a train wreck. Front: Grass was half brown and the ground was bumpy concrete. Back: Ground like concrete and major ponding during rain. Full-sun areas were grassy. Full shade areas were bare with an occasional weed every 10 feet. Even though it was early spring, I core aerated the lot and spread mag-i-cal plus along with crabgrass preventer. Within two weeks the ground had some give and the ponding was gone. Fast forward three months and an application of Love Your Soil… Front: thick green grass over the entirety. Back: Ground is damp during heavy rains and ponding is gone. Weeds are dying. Grass is taking over the bare areas without seeding. I’m sold!
I followed the instructions to the letter and made sure that I applied it on day when there was no rain forecasted for 48hrs. I killed most of the weeds for sure but it also killed some of the grass. As a result I have some patches of dead grass in my lawn. Its okay though the grass I will get to come back but I hate the weeds thats why I bought the product in the first place.
THIS IS A TEST REVIEW
This is the first time I have used this product after conducting my own research. I had used other brands of seeds with mixed results. Anyway i bought this product to reseed some large patches in my lawn which developed due to amongst other things heavy traffic. I reseed and added starter fertilizer with top soil and raked it in. I made sure I water it twice a day on non rainy days but not too much to disturb the area. After 21 days I have full germination so much so that my wife suggests that I should reseed the whole lawn. I am planning to do that in the fall. The best seeds I have used so far. Jonathan Green I am sold.
I bought this product about 3 weeks ago and I immediately added it to a shaded area that I had seeded with Jonathan Green dense shade. The results were startling after I added this product. I began to see germination after 5 days. It’s wonderful
Used it to seed some shaded areas in my yard. It works like a charm. Made a mistake though by not adding starter fertilizer but corrected that. Also made sure that I cover the seeds to ward off birds. Now the shaded areas looks great.
I agree with the few that mentioned the feed part of the granular was great but I used Green up prior in the early Spring spplication with preventer. A) the preventer was not very thorough because weeds definitely came up. B) The Weed and Feed did not get rid of many weeds but fed lawn in my lates application. I’m a little dissapointed in the product but my lawn does look lush.
JG response – Green-Up with Crabgrass Preventer is a pre-emergent for crabgrass only when applied in the spring. The listed weeds are winter annual weeds. This product would need to be applied in the late summer or early fall as the soil temperature falls to 70° in order to suppress those listed. Green-Up Weed & Feed kills existing broadleaf weeds only. Please email us through our FAQ page for help determining what kind of weeds you are seeing and how to best go about controlling them.
Our soil is very hard, but the Alkaline product went to work loosing the soil. I had to apply several applications during the year since it was very hard and high Alkaline content. I did use your test kit to determine the Alkaline level. I’ve used your grass seed and more than satisfied with the quality and appearance of the lawn. Thank you.
I’m located in Orange County, California. I seeded the front yard on April 9, and the Solar Green seed germinated in about six days. The lawn is a dark green color with fine blade grass. Marathon II sod is quite common in this area, and I thought my back yard Marathon sod looked good; not anymore. Marathon II is quite coarse in comparison. The Jonathan Green Black Beauty SolarGreen front lawn is like a thick green carpet and cost about 1/10 that of sod. People are now stopping and asking what it is. It is now one of the best looking lawns in the area.
Hi, I have been using all your products and my lawn is doing great. My question is whether I need to apply fertilizer if I use magical plus? Thanks
JG Response – Yes, you do. Mag-I-Cal Plus raises pH and feeds the soil microbes among other things but it is not a fertilizer as it does not supply nitrogen. Some lawns do see a green-up after application as the soil microbes release trapped nutrients when they are biologically active.
I put this down around Halloween. I live in the Northeast. My lawn was green as can be once grass woke up and ground thawed. Barely changed color even during coldest part of winter. Still only one on my block with deep green grass. And a lot of others use landscapers. Recommend this highly in fall.
I love all your products. Will never buy anyone else\’s. So far more professional than the average lawn guy wants. J.G. has the highest elite products that exist for the home owner. Magical last fall raised my ph quite a bit this spring, and topped it off with magical plus this spring. My pH is right on. Going to buy love your soil soon so I can apply it going into summer. My soil will be so microbial active and porous and aerated. I\’m all in. Totally addicted to Jonathan Green. I thought I had some nice kbg until I renovated with BB-ultra. Now I wish every grass blade on my property was j.g. ultra. I kid you not. Thank you j.g.
This was the 1st year that I have used this grass seed and boy am I impressed. I reseeded in October and this spring, omg! My lawn is gorgeous! This grass is worth every penny. I finally have a thick lawn. Thank You guys at Johnathan Green.
I use this seed in my own lawn, and most of the lawns i install for customers. Great success and results from every time I’ve used the product. Soil testing, correct nutrient application and watering will also add to the positive results.
Ordered a 7 lb bag Monday about noon Pacific Standard Time here in Southern California. Arrived Wednesday early afternoon. I have killed and dug out the old lawn. Will post another review in a few weeks with how the new seed is doing.
I have been using this product a number of years in NJ. I am currently in SC and found the same product by a different company but at 1.5 times the price. I have ordered it and had it sent to my local True Value hardware store. This product works, one application and all diseases were eliminated for the year ! Very effective and reasonably priced.
I have used Blue Panther and I was impressed. I am looking into using Black Beauty Ultra this time around and in reviewing the product fact sheet, I am finding that it is too general. Can you please advise what percentage of each grass type this blend contains and what varities of each grass type are in the blend? I just want to make an informed decision. Thank you
JG Response: The percentages and varieties vary from lot to lot. More specific information can be found on the analysis tag on the back of each grass seed bag.
Please say what part of the country you live in. This will help others who wish to try the seed to know what to expect. Thanks, Liz from Seattle
JG Response: Thanks for your suggestion Liz! Please see our “Why Choose Black Beauty Grass” page for our usage map: https://www.jonathangreen.com/seeding-with-black-beauty-grass-seed.html
We bought this place 25 years ago – without a Lawn. Immediately I began testing, aerating, coring, fertilizing, reseeding. To No Good Effect! Wasted Money! Heard about Jonathan Greene fertilizers in my Winter research. Ordered and put it down. Not the Immediate Effect other companies claim they have which was fine for me. I grew up on a ranch/farm learning from my Dad that Patience and Determination are required. Put MAG-I-CAL down the next year. People walking past and people driving, when I was outdoors, stopped, and wanted to know What I fertilized with. I told them Jonathan Greene products. Figuring they forgot the name once home, I had some cards made up and gave those out. And that started the “Resident” (my address) mail! Thanking me… Perhaps this long review will help you decide to make the switch to Jonathan Greene products. Happy Gardening! 🙂
I emailed the customer service folks and they told me to loosen the soil up with Love Your Soil in August and plant grass seed in September. There is a 4 foot area next to my driveway where I\’ve had trouble growing grass. This combo worked and I now have grass all the way to the pavers. I\’m very happy with the results.
I decided to buy Ultra Beauty for my back yard renovation since a local store had it available. I’ve done a lot of seeding and renovation using other brands and was always successful. My backyard, about 10,000sq ft and almost perfect rectangle had the perfect watering set up. I had terrible germination… maybe 60% in some areas and well over a month now. Now I’m headed into winter with a dog and what is going to be a lot of mud spots. Wish I had a better experience, especially considering the high end price.
JG response: Please email us us through our FAQ site for help. You don’t say what state you are in but if your soil temperatures were not at 57° or higher at the time of seeding, this can hinder germination as tall fescue takes about 14 days to germinate when soil temps are at 57°. Mid-September is a better time to seed then Mid-October for this reason.
It is now November and I’ve used Jonathans Organic lawn food twice this year. My lawn was always not the best, in fact it was the worst. Now my lawn is by far, the greenest on the block, and it is really lush. I live across neighbors who prides their lawn and their Scotts products, but now their lawn looks dried up, scarce and yellow green. So blown away! I’m a fan for life.
For the past two years I’ve been struggling to build a thick and healthy lawn. In part because my soil was literally rock solid from the compaction of trucks coupled with nutrient lacking dirt. This year (Sept 25th in CT) after aerating, I put down a little topsoil, starter fertilizer, Jonathan Green Ultra Black beauty and Love Your Soil. 5 weeks later I have a dark green, lush, awesome lawn. Couldn’t be happier. Thank you!
I put this down in a few bare spots i had. 7 days later it was already sprouting. And didn’t get a lot of water. 3 weeks after it was filled in and no more bare spot.
Put it down after over seeding with Perennial Rye on sept 30. And it worked amazingly. Grass has never looked greener. Just had to lower the suggested rate on my spreader. I bought 5,000 sq ft bag. My front lawn is 925 sq feet and it was running out fast.
I had a lawn that I have been working on for just the second season. I bought the Tri-Rye to over seed on Sept 30. I mowed today for he first time and it looks amazing. Greenest Lawn on the block.
This is only my second year of using Jonathan Green products and there has been a noticeable difference in my grass. It stayed green all summer and much greener then my neighbors. I used only one application of Winter Survival last year and was very pleased with the result. I plan to apply a second application this year for even better results. I use only Jonathan Green products and follow there schedule for the Northeast. I live In Pennsylvania. I find all there products to be superior to all other brands. A few years back my lawn developed a disease using a different brand. I had to reseed large areas. Now, with Jonathan Green, I no longer have a problem. I’m so evicted by the results. I can’t wait for the next application. A very superior product. Use it.
I used this in the middle of September and am happy with the results. It has a dark color and filled in all the bare spots.
Absolutely disappointed after aeration and seeding fertilizing in ideal growing conditions 14 days later nothing kept watered this product is awful will not waste my time or lots of money on this don’t do it would if gotten better with a cheap bad if crap fescue
JG Response: You don’t say what state you are in but tall fescues takes 14-21 days to germinate and soil temperatures must be at or above 60° for it to do that. Please email through our FAQ site for help.
Almost every house on my street have Kentucky Blue Grass but I tried Johnathan Green Black Beauty Ultra in September 18 and it is been about 3 weeks, lawn is very nice…. Can\’t wait for first mow and next Spring. I picked this seeds because I want low maintenance and use less water. This is not Kentucky 31 so the blade and the color are very nice!
Product works great, especially when you add more Black Beauty grass seed to it. Only issue is after grass is established, full and thick, brown spots start to appear and the grass dies in those spots. Maybe the mulch retains too much water. JG, any thoughts?
JG Response: It could be fungus or insects. If you see this happen again, please email us through our FAQ site and we will ask for photos to figure out what is going on.
First time I’ve used this grass seed. It is coming in nicely and has a great color. Can’t wait to see what it looks like when it is all filled in.
At first I was impressed, but now several months later, I am not impressed at all. I wanted a dark green lush lawn and used the seed to fill in some really bare spots. Most of it has died.
JG response: If the seed grew well but later dies, it is not the seed. There are many outside factors can can kill grass such as fungus and insects. Please email us through our FAQ section for help troubleshooting what happened.
New to this whole lawn care game. My lawn was probably the worst in the neighborhood of new homes. After endless trips to the big box stores, I finally took the advice from the owner of the local family owned garden center. He recommended Jonathan Green products and I followed his instructions. My lawn is now amazing, lush, green, thick and a pleasure to look at. I actually look forward to each step of the Jonathan Green New American Lawn Program. No, I don’t work for the company but I must say it beats everything I have ever tried. Four steps a year and easy to apply.
The color of this grass is unbelievable! so dark green and thick. Will be my go to from now on.
September 6, 2021, mowed (low), thatched, and aerated an existing lawn before applying Black Beauty Ultra with Green-Up Fertilizer for Seeding & Sodding…watered regularly…the grass seed has not germinated…a waste of time and money!
JG Response – Please email us through our FAQ site so we can troubleshoot with you.
Planted Black Beauty Fall Magic on top of screened topsoil/compost topped with peat moss and starter Sept 12 2020. Germinated quickly cut 30 days applied Milorganite after Thanksgiving. Came up fine in spring 2021. Applied Milorganite Memorial & 4th July weekends. Died summer 2021 – renovating again this time not with JG product
JG Response – If the seed came up and the grass was doing well, then the issue was not with the grass. There are many outside influences that can cause grass to die such as wrong climate or conditions for the seed chosen, disease and insects.
Our once beautiful lawn was looking sad and sparse. No matter how much I watered it was in bad shape. I decided to do a soil test and it revealed high pH and severely depleted nutrient levels. I found Jonathan Green. I treated with Mag-i-Cal Plus to quickly reduce pH and began the prep work of aerating, dethatching, mowing, filling holes, and finally spreading the lawn food and overseeding with this Heavy Traffic seed. Today is Day 22 and our lawn is not only growing but it is beautiful. I’m astounded! This seed is worth every penny. There are NO weeds growing with the new grass. None. Our soil is being fed, the pH quickly came into an optimal range, and for the first time in a long time I have received compliments on our lawn. 22 days of watering and it is like a beautiful carpet. We chose the Heavy Traffic seed because we have three dogs. I’m looking forward to next Spring to test, add amendments, and stare at our beautiful lawn. This seed is worth every penny.
When I had a new lawn installed I used Tru Green lawn service to get the lawn established. I never wanted the lawn to become chemical dependent and the cost was about $700/year. I found Jonathan Green’s Corn Gluten Weed Preventer plus Lawn Food as an alternative to Gardens Alive! Wow Plus, a similar product. Jonathan Green’s product was superior to Wow Plus at a lower cost and I am not dumping chemicals onto the lawn. I apply in March and see quick lasting green up and no weeds. While neighborhood lawns are loaded with dandelions, I don’t have a single one.
Sad to say but I have never pH tested my NC soil before. I bought 5 of these soil pH test kits and tried them out. The instructions are very easy and it was a simple procedure. I tested the soil in areas that I had difficulty growing grass. Prior to testing, I would have assumed that the soil was already acidic enough but to my surprise, the samples showed pH’s ~ 7 in some areas and pH’s ~ 8 or higher in others. This is very helpful information and now I know what needs to be done to bring the pH into the 6.2 – 7.0 range for my tall fescue grass. I would highly recommend this product.
I purchased sowed and successfully sprouted 3 bags of this seed October 2020. It is now September 2021 and it is all dead. March 2021 I recommended this seed to my daughter and husband. They succeeded in sprouting 2 bags in March 2021. They too have no grass. At nearly $150 a bag. A score of 1 star is disappointing (0 is the correct score)It’s disgusting
JG response: As you stated, the seed did grow and now almost a year has passed. Please email us through our FAQ site for help. This time of year there are many things that can cause grass damage. We will be happy to troubleshoot with you.
My company has used their products for 32 years. Retired now and still use it on my own lawn. Used the tri – rye to fill in some bare areas and over seed the rest with extremely good results. If you do your part the seed will do the rest.
Did not like this product , loosend soil up , kept sheet down with spikes to make sure they didn’t move , kept it watered daily with plenty of sunshine and got absolutely nothing, very disappointed ,should have just bought some seed .
JG Response: Please email us through our FAQ site for help.
I have a lawn that in the past has had a LOT of issues. Even when I was taking good care of it, I could never get the results I wanted. For 2021 I swore I was going to make a change, and so I did. No more Scott’s, no more Pennington, THIS year I went with ALL Jonathan Green Products. While my lawn is not quite there yet, it’s recovery is outstanding!!! I will never go back to any other lawn product. JG is the best, and the rest are all DANG LIARS!!!
Everyone told me lawns in my area (South Jersey) are never alkaline. This test kit told me my soil was alkaline so I applied Mag-I-Cal for alkaline lawns. A few months later it improved slightly so I’m doing another application this weekend. I’ll check it again in a few months.
When you buy cheap, you get cheap. Words to live by. Overseeded last fall with this product, starter fert and Love Your Soil. Did core aeration first and did not water due to rainy weather at the time. I\\\’m very happy with the result. I highly recommend the JG product line and encourage all you lawn care nuts (like me) who are obsessive about your lawn to use them. Spend the extra money for superior product; in a couple years you won\\\’t miss it and you\\\’ll love the result.
I bought a bag of the sun and shade mix to do an over seed for this fall but I had some patches in my front yard that were bare ground and they were driving me crazy of so I decided to plant some seed. It’s been in the 90s and I know this isn’t the time of year to do it but by God when I pulled up to the house this morning after just four days I’ve got little strands of grass working their way out of the soil. I’m impressed
I followed the instructions to a T and it’s been 5 weeks and nothing. Haven’t had a single spout.
JG response: The end of June is not a good time to seed cool season grass. When soil temperatures are above 70°, cool-season grass seed can have poor seed germination or even seedling death.
I agree with Jims review, at first it wasnt a very good experience as the spreader I picked up was missing a bunch of parts and was loose as can be. I got the missing parts and reassembled and its a pretty robust unit. The one thing i think is a weak link is the cotter pin they use to agitate, mine just kept falling off. I drilled the stud out and put a bolt through it (this is something that should be done from the factory as it is much stronger. That being said I have calibrated my spreader and still feel as though either the spreader may be a tad off or the bags don\\\’t cover as much as they claim. I did step 3 and used two 15,000 sqft bags at the recommended setting. My yard is about 12,000 square feet so something is off. I also dosed at the recommended spacing. Overall I do like the spreader but feel as though they could come up with a more accurate setting system.
I have tried many other lawn programs and despaired that my lawn would never resemble a friend’s, whose lawn looked like a carpet (He would not tell me what he used!). I at last asked my local independent garden shop what is the best program. He sells Scott’s, but was never happy with the results, he said. What he recommended was this Jonathan Green program. I thought I’d try it, but if the lawn looked the same after a couple of months, I was going to go with a far more expensive lawn service. I am astonished, though. I have that green carpet (and I mow it high, as my friend does) with just spotty weeds, not the swaths of various weeds throughout the lawn. It’s just summer as I write and the the lawn looks amazingly good. I hope and I believe it will look just as good in the fall. I DO recommend getting the Jonathan Green spreader. I tried using my old spreader to distribute the first application of JG, and it was a guessing game in that I just barely covered the lawn. The spreader is well-made for the money (Scott’s is junk and pricey, IMO.) and the Program plus spreader are WAY cheaper than that lawn service I was considering. No, I do not work for Jonathan Green. I am just pleased that a product actually works as advertised.
Worked wonderful to help get rid of carpenter ants that were tunneling in the backyard. The ground was spongy from all the tunnels. Within one month the sponging subsided and no noticeable carpenter ant activity in that area. Lasted the entire summer with minimal reapplication.
Followed the directions, applied when the grass was wet with no rain for 4 days. Nothing turned yellow and died and I still have clover growing in many areas as well as other weeds.
JG Response: Please email us through our FAQ section for help. It is absorbed by the leaves and into the roots where it kills from the roots up. It can take 2 – 4 weeks to see complete kill. If it has been less than that, give it more time.
I love your products, much better than Scott’s. My lawn is truly beautiful. The only complaint I have is your suggested application rates. Let’s take Magical Plus. The bag says to apply at 1&1/2 with a Scott’s drop spreader. Their spreader starts at 2 so that’s what I did. Your website says to set a Scott’s Classic drop spreader at 2.5. Which is it? I bought a 15,000 square ft bag that should have allowed me to do approximately 3 family homes. I did 5 with some to spare.(Yes, I checked the calibration before I started each house.) Conversely, I have used some of your synthetic weed and feed products (I do 4 treatments a year) that claim to cover 5,000 sf. Wrong! I needed to purchase more despite personally having a roughly 6,000 sf property including the house and flower beds. Accordingly, I should have had left overs. Your products are wonderful; however, you need to “get it together” with your coverage rates.
Find settings confusing. Putting down organic fertilizer setting is 15, that would be about 3/4 open. I wonder if bag will cover what it claims? Other than that it rolls over lawn easily. I would give it a 5 star if I was certain the settings were accurate.
JG Response: That is the correct setting for the Organic Lawn Food. Make sure the spreader is calibrated. Here is a video showing how. Copy and paste it into your browser. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aHmqXIkjFo
Over-seeded in spring against all advice from the “experts”. Proved them wrong. This grass seed works amazing. Just follow the directions and water, water, water and you will have a great looking yard. Did have quite a bit of crabgrass later into the summer but that has nothing to do with this seed. I just didn’t properly prepare the yard last fall/winter. You will not be disappointed if you follow the directions.
This product works very well. Have a very shaded yard and have had an ongoing moss problem for years. I have used Scotts products with very limited success. I saw this product at my local Ace Hardware and decided to buy one bag to give it a try..I was very impressed. I could actually see it was working the next day. I have since bought 2 more bags. Highly impressed with this product.
I dethatched the entire yard, core aerated the entire yard, applied Tenacity and Speed Zone to kill weeds, put down seed, then put down starter fertilizer. This was in early May, in New England, so a spring over seed. The lawn looks 100% better than last year, 1 month later. The plan is to do it all again in the fall and never allow the weeds to take control of the yard, through my neglect, again. Very impressed with the grass that has grown so far.
So I didn’t see any immediate result on the first go around. I was starting to be concerned I had got scammed. However, 3 weeks after application my lawn was noticeably darker than my neighbors. Not sure if the delay is because I let my lawn go for so long or because the fertilizer is slow release. For some reason the label said to use a 6 setting on my Scott’s broadcast spreader. I calculated the weight used and it came out to be a bit more than what was supposed to be dispensed for my lot size. I then ratio’d everything and figured the spreader setting should be right around 3.75. I used that setting on my second go around. Distributed almost perfect. Not sure if anyone else had this issue but it did the trick for me. In any case this stuff isn’t bad at all.
I had posted a review in October of 2020 and I was amazed at the lawn now it’s May of 2021 and the grass I grew in October is amazing . It’s thick and Very healthy. The true test is the hot summer. Just an FYI I am trying the 4 step program this year . I also live in the NE if that helps , so it’s cool weather grass . So far I love the product and will never go back to the old stuff.
I purchased 3- 13.5 lb bags of the lawn repair. I followed all of the instructions and not one blade of grass is growing. Very disappointed in this product. Might switch to Scotts.
JG Response: Please email us through our FAQ page for help.
This seed is well worth the investment! A friend of mine recommended it as the best seed ever, and man was she right! After putting in a patio we needed to reseed some portions of our lawn, and you can SEE and FEEL the difference between this grass and the original grass. What a game changer!
I have been using mag-i-cal plus since 2017. Mag-I-Cal has been the big difference in the lawn. The product is all that was advertised. We now use all Jonathan Green products for our annual lawn maintenance. PS. Our Jonathan Green supplier recommended that we maintain grass height at 3.75″ or higher. Thanks for the help and advice.
I bought Jonathan green magical plus and just put it down. The soil test from yard mastery concluded my pH was 5.7. I will retest my soil pH level late summer early fall to see if it has raised then I will put results on here. So far so good. I have about 15,000sqft. I bought 2 big bags cuz it says under 5.9 pH I need to apply at rate of 1 big bag per 7500sqft. So I applied 2 big bags. Can someone from Jonathan Green answer this question…. Will too much of this product hurt my lawn??? I just get so nervous because my lawn is very beautiful thanks to the help of liquid bio stimulants. I want to adjust the pH without using 200 lb of lime. So I chose the magical plus product I just get nervous somebody from Jonathan Green please tell me everything will be all right…. Lol
Jonathan Green Response:
Hi Jeff, We’re very happy to hear you’ve enjoyed using Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Acidic & Hard Soil. This product is not like a lawn fertilizer that will burn your lawn but applying too much of this product could potentially make your soil’s pH alkaline. Since your soil is naturally acidic, the amount of product that you applied should be just fine. You wish to recheck your pH, wait three weeks and test it again. At that point, you will be able to see if your soil pH is neutral or if you need to apply more product. Thanks! – Jonathan Green Customer Service.
2 weeks little growth a few pieces of grass. Weather hasn’t really broke yet but easy. Waiting for some sunny days for some growth. Really easy. Keep moist
I heard about this grass seed on You Tube, and boy were they right right about this seed. I over seeded my lawn without doing mechanical aeration, instead I have been using Air 8 and Rgs from Green County Fertilizer Co for the last 3 years which has taken care of my compaction problem. I cut the lawn low in September over seeded and watered every day for two weeks. Low and behold this grass seed came in thick and beautiful this year 2021. Couldn’t be happier with the results I have got. Will do the same thing this year without mechanical aeration. Love this seed!
It’s only been 10 days since seeding. Temperatures in the high 70s to mid 80s right now. So far this seed has been wonderful. I just brought it to put in my lawn as a project. I must say it’s very good quality. I guess the test will be when we hit the 90s on up, but so far it’s amazing.
I recently started using Jonathan Greene products. Last Fall, I over-seeded with Black Beauty and also applied their winter fertilizer. On April 1st, I applied Green-Up with crab grass preventer. The results are amazing! My neighbor uses an expensive lawn fertilizer company ($1400/yr for 8 applications) and for many years his lawn looked much nicer than mine. For the first time in 15 years, because of Jonathan Greene, at a fraction of what my neighbor spends, my lawn looks thicker, greener, and more lush. I am sold on Jonathan Greene products!
Put down last spring to fill in bare spots on my lawn. It never came in very thick, despite appropriate watering and fertilizer. After the winter, I have a lot of dead grass. We live in a northern climate, but don’t think that’s the issue. Good marketing, poor performance.

Probably a good grass mixture, but less than 10% Texas Bluegrass. 90% of the mix is their premium tall fescue. If this info was available on the page description I would have not purchased this product.
JG Response: We are sorry for any confusion. The components of this mixture are also in the Description and Specification headings under the “Add to cart” box. Grass seed is listed in percentages by weight, not seed count. Texas Bluegrass seeds are about 1/3 the size of tall fescue seeds so by seed count, this mixture is about 40% Texas Bluegrass and 60% tall fescue. FYI – when you see the word “mixture” on a bag of grass seed, that indicates more than one species. When you seed the word “blend”, that indicates one species.
What a impressive easy way to patch a bare spot! I cut the roll with a scissor to the size of the bare spot. Layed it down and water it. Very fast and easy
I dethatched and overseeded last fall with this seed. The tall fescue is really nice with very fine blades and very dark green color. However, I had a LOT of weeds this spring (much more than usual). Mostly wild onion and orchard grass. I\’ve never had these in my yard until this year. I\’m a bit disappointed.
Bought this spreader last spring. Worked great. Hosed off after every use. Stored in my dry shed over the winter. Used this spring and noticed the center turning pin very rusted and the cable does not work properly any more. I am very disappointed.
JG response: Please email us through our FAQ section for help.
The large hard granules in this product don’t work well with my drop spreader. The granules can’t get through the opening for the prescribed setting.
JG Response: For any spreader to be completely accurate, it should be calibrated to each product individually. Suggested settings are only a guide. Please see our FAQ on how to do this.
Hello, My Lawn size is about 6000 Sq ft. It would have been nice if your product also comes in 1000 sq ft, so people can buy 5000sq ft+1000 sq ft, for those having lawn smaller than 10,000 sq ft. Hopefully we can find product in 1000 sq ft soon. -Thx, Nimish
Bag said my Scott’s rotary setting was 7. Didn’t cover area ,had to buy more. Checked web sight today and found setting listed as 5. Some difference!
JG response: Please email us through our FAQ site for help with this issue.
Birdsfoot trefoil is an invasive species. Would suggest removing it from this mixture. not hard to have native only wild flowers.
JG response: Birdsfoot trefoil is a perennial that adapts well to production on poorly drained, low-pH soils which is why it was chosen. It can become invasive if not taken care of like many other plants. To keep it in check, small plants can be dug up, but all of the roots must be removed to prevent it from resprouting.
We have very poor topsoil in my front yard. I’ve struggled to get other seed mixtures to grow in the past but this Black Beauty Mixture has done very well. I haven’t even watered it much. It must be a very drought tolerant grass seed.
I have never planted grass seed before and am quite lazy and impatient and cheap! I have a small rental townhouse and the backyard is very shady and full of weeds, but too costly to hire someone to fix. Last October, I figured I would mostly pull the weeds and throw down some of the shady nook grass seed plus the magical plus. Put on a sprinkler timer for 5 minutes a day and walked away. 3 weeks later it was LUSH and GORGEOUS! I can\’t believe the difference – especially given this is my first time and I am not all that careful. Love it. Wish I could post a before and after picture because it is hard to believe how good the transformation of the mud pit to lush yard was!
Detached and aerated both front and back yards. The guy who aerated had a machine that dropped grass seed as he did it. It’s January here in PA and my lawn is a dark green like it has never been before. Impressed. I seeded a bare spot in late october/early november hoping it was not too late. Nope. Came in nice and full in that spot. Looking forward to the spring green time. I will try all JG products now. I use to be a Scotts man, 100%. Not anymore.
I use it in an area that never gets sun from April to September. Grass is small and grows slowly, but it is nice and green. Excellent customer service, very knowledgeable and gives great advice. Survives with little water.
Two years ago I had a lawn company come out and service my lawn. It wasn’t bad but I had several spots that were nothing but weed where the grass just would not fill in. To make a long story short they ruined my lawn! The PH was a little low so lime was applied and six months later my lawn became overtaken by weeds. This past spring we overseeded with Bermuda and the results were poor. The grass germinated but again the weeds took over. In September I overseeded with Fescue and even though the grass started coming in it was still thin with lots of bare spots. Finally I purchased a quality PH/Moisture meter and took readings at various places around the yard. The PH was between 6.9 to 7.2 everywhere which explains the slow growth. Bottom line, the lawn company put down too much lime. A few weeks ago I purchased three bags of Mag-I-Cal for Alkaline soil and applied it following the instructions on the bag then watered the lawn. Since that time we have had two good soaking rains. Today I walked outside and I honestly can not believe my eyes. In just two weeks my lawn went from OK to looking as if I had replaced the entire lawn with sod! Mag-I-Cal is the only thing I have used since seeding. I would not believe it had I not seen it with my own eyes! Amazing!
I used the ultra grass seed to do a heavy overseed of my existing lawn. I put is down at the end of September and by the end of October my grass was deep green, very thick, and lush. I am constantly receiving compliments from neighbors.
I had been working on a project to clear the back half of my property, about 1/2 an acre, and was surprised when everything fell together and I complete the work by October 10th. I thought that I was not going to complete the work until early December. Now that I was a head of schedule, I needed to get grass seed down ASAP so I would be able to establish a lawn this fall and help to choke out weeds in the spring. the temps were in the low to mid 60\’s during the days and in the low 50\’s at night. I thought that it might have gotten to cold to get grass seed to germinate. I put 25LB\’s of this fall magic down because it seemed like the best option and of all the recommendations for the Johnathan Green seed I had read it looked like the best option. I put down the seed on Saturday and set up the sprinklers and hoped I would get some germination. boy, did I ever! the entire yard has evenly germinated and is now starting to thicken up. I am now at two weeks and I hope to be able to walk on it a bit by next week. I need to remove some fallen leaves that are now covering the lawn. I want very impressed with the results of this seed compared to other seeds I have used. this came up fast and green. I will definitely over seed with a different blend in the spring but I am very happy with the product as of right now.
I have a part of my lawn that just dropped dead in the summer with competitors product and I re did the lawn with this sun and shade and it looks amazing . I will keep over seeding with the Sun and Shade and I believe it will keep its beauty.
Moved into a new home May 2020 with terrible lawn compacted clay soil… Killed off the backyard grass, tilled it up and put Mag-I-Cal Plus along with Green Up and Tri-Rye first of Oct… WOW.. We have a beautiful very green lawn.. Will continue the program in the Spring and reseed with Black Beauty….

I have tried like every brand, Scott’s, Pennington, even that Vigero stuff. Every other seed had issue with poor germination, poor drought tolerance, water saving fillers that took up half the weight of the bag, poor disease tolerance. I used this Black Beauty last fall (2019) because it was the only thing left in this little country hardware store. It’s the best grass I have ever planted in my life (I’m 42). It’s so impressive I took to the internet to see if other felt the same and apparently they do. I will be buying this every time I need seed for now on, even if that means buying in advance online. I haven’t seen it anyplace around here this year. I think Scott’s and Pennington sell poor seed on purpose so they can stay in business from everybody having to buy it over and over at Home Depot and Lowe’s. Black Beauty is once and done. It’s almost to good to be true.
At the recommendation of my local hardware store I tried Mag-I-Cal. This was back in April. When I tested the soil pH a month later it had actually gone down. I added regular lime and the lawn started to green up, and the pH went up by half a point. I’m moving on from Mag-I-Cal.
JG Response: Please email us at ask@jonathangreen.com. Did you use Mag-I-Cal for Lawns in Acidic Soil or Mag-I-Cal Plus for Lawns in Acidic Soil? What soil kit was used? If it was one with a powder, then alkaline water could have skewed the test. Mag-I-Cal is five times stronger than regular lime. Regular lime also takes a long time to raise pH, therefore, it is highly doubtful the regular lime had any effect that quickly. April temperatures were fairly cold. It is likely that once the soil temperatures warmed up, then the Mag-I-Cal began to work.
Best grass ever grew in no time .
This spreader is a beast, has large compacity, great swath, it rolls beautifully and helps get lawns fone quickly..also love the fact that the handle is already higher then most.all in all this is a great spreader and is priced to sell.
Big fan of this grass, green shoots came in quickly and filled out nicely as the grass continued to germinate. Applied in early Sept with no noticeable weed content. For best results get a proper soil sample before seeding so that you can select a proper fertilizer/lime/ etc to go along with it when seeding / overseeding.
I’ve used organic ferts before and some of them smell awful! This works well and no stink!
Initial grass came in good after a week but so did all the crab grass. Must have gotten a bad mix. Pulled out all crab grass added fresh garden soil reseeded, more crab grass. Have had better luck with JG in the past, not this year, very disappointed won’t buy again.
JG Response: Crabgrass is not a contaminant in our grass seed production fields. When you disturb the soil (as you should) by raking to prepare a good seed bed for seeding, you bring crabgrass seeds to the surface where they will germinate, especially if you seeded in July. September is a better time to seed because crabgrass germination is less likely as soil temperatures begin to cool. For further assistance, email through our FAQ page.
I love the fact that I can correct my soils pH and fix soil compaction with one product.
My soil test came back with high pH. This was recommended to me by True Value and I applied it in May. Now in July, the lawn looks better.
This is the second year I’ve used this product. My lawn has kept its green color even in the heat.
I did a complete lawn renovation and seeded with Black Beauty Ultra. The results are outstanding! The ryegrass germinated in 7 days and the tall fescue germinated in 14 days. A year later I have the only green lawn on the block in this July heat. If someone ever has an issue growing this seed I can guarantee it’s an environmental issue (weather, heat, poor soil, etc) not a seed issue.
I threw down some Scott’s, and well it came in really patchy ? Not impressed.. so I saw by all the reviews that ultra was the seed to try. And wow ! Filled in with dark thick grass in a very short time. Will be buying more ultra this fall.. Great seed and great Dark grass.
I bought this to replace my cheap Scotts spreader. Handles hilly terrains and maneuvers effortlessly with a full bucket. What I wasn’t expecting was the looks and attention I get when using it. Now the neighbor’s wife winks at me and single parent kids call me Dad. Red-Pawn-Lawn 4 Life
Spent Almost $90.00 With hopes of filling in some bare spots with nice grass. I dethatched the lawn & raked followed all instructions. After 3 weeks none of the seed germinated, Tried again after a month, 2 weeks later & still nothing! I guess I will have to go back to Scotts or Pennington. With so many good reviews I really don\’t understand did I get a bad bag of seed? because I have gotten other brands to grow without issues.
JG response: Please email us from the link in the FAQ section so we can trouble shoot with you.
Bought two bags of Lawn Weed Control and applied according to bag’s instructions. A very few weeds turned yellow for a couple of days, but didn’t die. All the other weeds continued growing without this product having ANY AFFECT ON THEM. It was a complete waste of my time and money. After this monumental failure to perform as advertised, I looked at the bag for a warranty and found that JG specifically disclaims the product will perform as advertised and denies there is a warranty (unless your state of residence prohibits them from limiting a warranty). This information is printed in such small print it’s almost impossible to read it in the store before purchasing. At least with Scott’s products the purchaser receives a warranty. Rest assured I won’t be using any JG products in the future!
JG response – Please email us through our FAQ tab. We have some questions. We will help you out.
I bought a bag of Ultra for $80 with high expectations. Unfortunately nothing germinated. I followed instructions, watered, etc. I raked it after three weeks and found seed but no grass. I bought another bag of Ultra from my local hardware store thinking that what I bought online was somehow defective. The same results with half the bag. Nothing germinated. I’m very disappointed. Will return to Scott’s brand after spending $160 on Jonathan Green☹️.

I applied this product exactly as directed under perfect conditions. Applied whiled lawn was moist from previous rain and morning dew. Then it didn\\\’t rain for 3 days so the product wouldn\\\’t be washed off. It seems to fertilized the lawn well but left the weeds and clover untouched. I don\\\’t recommend for weeds.
I applied the Mag-I-Cal plus to my lawn on 6/3/20 just before a heavy rain. The lawn is on week 5 so I\’m do for another round of Fertilizer. Within 3 days after applying Mag-I-Cal plus the lawn def looked much better.!!! My last soil test 4/28/20 showed my ph at 5.2 so I still have more work to do to bump the ph higher.
I got tired of buying coated grass seed that was 75% seed 25% coatings. Made the switch and couldn\’t be happier. Prep is key, I power thatched first then used the slit cut attachment to cut my soil. Over seeded using Blue Panther, Germenation was as stated, about 21 days, however got better as time went on. I estimate about 95% germination after 40 days. Nice strong growth, great dark color. Will be doing a fall over seed with this as well. No more over spending for a coated product. This seed is fantastic.
I planted this in my field, now I have 3/4 of a pasture with weeds that my horse won’t eat and can’t find where to contact anyone. I’m going to take samples to garden center and see exactly what they are. Won’t order again.
JG response: Pasture Mixture contains: Gulf Annual Ryegrass, Fawn Tall Fescue, Tetraploid Perennial Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Orchardgrass, Timothy and White Clover. The exact percentages are on the back of the bag on the analysis tag. You can email us here: https://www.jonathangreen.com/faqs.html.
I have to admit that I was very skeptical about Love Your Soil and Magi-I-Cal Plus but after using both products for less than one year, I’m a true believer! Like many households in North Carolina, my clay soil was extremely compact and very hard to work with even after amending it with screened compost and peat moss. After using both products my soil appears to be less dense, I don’t have puddles of standing water and my grass is deep green even during extended periods of drought. My lawn might not be picture perfect yet but I finally feel that I’m on the correct path to a much healthier soil and lawn. Thank you for making professional grade products available to home owners.

This product does exactly what it says it does. Very cool.
Field conditions: Seeded: June 1, 2020 Geo Location: South Nassau, L.I. NY Install location: Deep shade, 1/4″ high-quality topsoil on top of BACKFILL. Area 3.5′ x 35′. Fertilizer added. Weather: 55 – 75 some clouds, some rain. Seeded DENSE SHADE per directions on 1/4″ of high quality top soil. added fast start pellets. Kept moist daily. Sprouted on 6th day following steady, gentle rains and warm weather. SO far So good!
Have used this now for the 2nd year and with the rains we have had this is filling in very nice. Just noticed today that the thickness is becoming lush. Great Product.
I purchased Dense Shade for large patches in two very shady areas (I\’d estimate 70-80% shade) of the lawn, in addition to the Ultra sun and shade for over-seeding in the entire yard (total 11,000sf). I only got very sparse germination in the two shady areas I was most concerned about (have photos I could send). I followed all preparation instructions: aerated, limed soil to bring pH between 6-7, applied Jonathan Green\’s starter fertilizer after the seed and raked it all in gently, made sure seed was well and evenly distributed; then watered about 2x day to keep moist (sometimes 3x if needed). We had cooler-than normal temps the first two weeks of May — high 50s/low 60s, but steadily in the high 60s-low 80s in the last two weeks. Now, most of the yard is lush, thick green, but just over 4 weeks after planting, the shady areas are still mostly bare. Not sure what else I could have done? Frankly, I\’m surprised by all the 5-star ratings here!
JG: Photos requested by email.
I had some bare spots all over my large lawn(120 ft x 240 ft) thanks to a large crop of weeds last year and a large “crop” of raccoons. This seed germinates well and the grass is beautiful, thick and great to look at. I’ve tried lots of seeds in the past but none were as nice as Black Beauty. Plan to get more to keep on hand.
My lawn was struggling. There were a few areas that never greened up and weeds were persistent. Fertilizing didn’t help. I took a few soil samples and took them to the USDA lab by the house. Found out the lawn was alkaline at roughly 7.5 ph. I started applying elemental sulphur last year but did not see any difference. This year I decided to try something different. I purchased an electric dethatcher/scarifier and went to town on my yard. It looked bad when I was done. I also aerated with a core machine. When that was done, I applied mag-i-cal plus, love your soil, black beauty ultra seed as well as starter fertilizer. In the 6 weeks since I did this work, my yard has never looked better. I have the greenest yard on the block. The thin spots have filled in nicely and I will make these Jonathan Green products part of my yearly application. I am very happy with these products.
This is the first time I have re seeded my last(last fall). It’s now the end of May, and there are so much weeds, just like before. I cut the grass high(doesn’t remove much) but I’m afraid to cut too low. The temperature has been cold most of the spring, so hoping to see more growth in June. Applied Magi-Cal this week. Since I’m new at this, I hope I’m doing all this correctly.
After 7 days the treated area looks great – nice, even, lush green. The granules are easy to see while being broadcasted so helps get even coating.
Went from one of the worst yards in the neighborhood to one of the best. For many years just could not get the grass to thrive and it would typically thin out and die in late summer. Last year (2019) started using Love Your Soil as well as the Mag-I-Cal product (have mostly clay soil). Fast forward to May 2020 and the entire yard is thick, green, and healthy…primarily because the roots are now much deeper. Fired the lawn-care company and now going DIY with the JG lawn care plan.
This website it’s absolutely not user-friendly it should be easy to buy a product, this site it’s nearly impossible!!! It’s nothing wrong with the product but this is my only way of giving feed back, I shop on line everyday!
This products works!!! I applied this product on April 3rd 2020. I also applied Mag-I-Cal and Black Beauty Ultra Seed in the same day. I let Mother Nature water it in. I have seen amazing results. I still have to deal with some broad-leaf issues in the yard, but it looks amazing and you can see results. My neighbors have been asking me what I did and they are now using the product…with my help!
Hopeful for this product but it did not work. My pH is maybe 0.1 – 0.2 lower but certainly not the results I was expecting for the price. I had to buy three bags for my acre of land, what a waste of money!
Spent a lot of time and energy preparing the ground as instructed. Watered as directed…no growth at all. Waste of time and money.
Jonathan Green response: We are having an unseasonably cold spring. Until your soil temperature is 55° consistently, grass will not grow. Right now in NJ, it is only 45°. Please email us for further assistance.
Don\’t ever use this grass send – contains Poa T, or it used to. It ruined my Lawn and J.G. will not own up to it. IT\’s a disaster and it grows in the sun areas of my lawn.
We are sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction with our Shady Nooks Grass Seed Mixture. You are correct that we did have 10% Poa Trivialis in this mixture three years ago. Poa Trivialis is a great choice for lawns that are grown in damp shade. It is not a good grass for sunny areas of the lawn, because in the sun it looks very different. It creates a mottled appearance in the lawn and looks like a contaminant. We thought that the name of this grass seed mixture Shady Nooks and the descriptive phrase on the bag, “Survives in shady areas, wet or dry, where others have failed” would alert our customers to the fact that this was not a grass seed mixture to plant in the sunny areas of the lawn. We did receive a few complaints about poa trivialis by people who had planted it in the sunny areas of their lawn and decided that we should stop using poa trivialis in Shady Nooks which as I stated earlier was three years ago. If you check out the reviews for Shady Nooks on our website there are 108 of them right now. 85 give Shady Nooks a 5- Star Rating, 21 a 4-Star Rating and 2 a 3-Star Rating. There are no 2-star or 1-star ratings so the vast majority of our customers really like the Shady Nooks Grass Seed Mixture. If you write back with your address we will send you a bag of the new mixture to try, we think that you will like what you see in your lawn this time.
Thank you for your feedback, The Jonathan Green Team
Fantastic product! Grass Seed grew quickly, really green & thick! beautiful turf! Wonderful product. Does exactly as it says!
We have totally to Jonathan Green soil and lawn products. The grass is so much stronger after 2 years of it than it was after 6 years of Scott’s.
Love it
Easy to use and great value for the money
I love it and it is growing in areas where I just put the seeds before it rain
Put seed down and this fertilizer together. Results were visible in 3 days on the existing lawn and stayed green for atleast 2 months.
Worked great
My grass grew so well after this!
Our German Shepherd and Belgian Malinios turned our yard into a mud pit, it was actually two large mud pits. We seeded a total of 2 separate times about 3 weeks apart and put mushroom compost over it and watered twice a day. I am now SO happy to see nice green grass that withstands the force of my working dogs.
A fantastic grass seed, we had a big party in our yard and used a umbrella stand on the lawn. We liked how it looked and worked, so we left it there fo the summer. After removing it there was a big round dead spot left. One application of this seed and ina week we had grass, two weeks and you cound not tell there was a big round dead spot.
Started seeing grass within 3 days. Very impressed!
Great product. It is still doing well despite dogs being in the yard.
Grass had zero weeds and came in thick.
We couldnt get any grass to grow at our home. So I ordered this and look how nice it turned out. Lol, now everybody wants some.
Sprouts quickly like most reviewers noted. Doesnt grow deep strong roots, so when the dog ran across it, it was flattened and pulled up quickly…then again, we have a active big dog. It sprouts quick enough, you can quickly reseed areas.
Great product. Make sure to use plenty.
Used it to over seed my lawn, because of the warm weather this year it has started to sprout. Germination looks good can’t wait till spring
Good germination, nice dark green grass, does take a few weeks to get going. Grass seed was fresh, and as far as I can tell, it all germinated.
Used as a fall overseed, but my lawn was so bare from neglect – it was almost a do over. I spread at overseeding rates. Coverage was excellent regardless of being spread a bit thin. Lawn is like a carpet now – and I’ve gotten more than a few compliments. I’m looking forward to how it looks in the spring.
So far so good.. springtime will be the best review factor. However I will say my grass is DEFINITELY greener than my neighbors..CONSIDERABLY NOTICEABLY. So much so that I can SEE EVERY SPOT I MISSED DURING APPLICATION. The picture speaks for itself!
To be applied in the Spring
Received and will plant in the Spring
Quick delivery
Jonathon Green is my favorite brand for a great lawn. Had my landscaper put it diwn instead of his seed.
Great
Best seed on the market
Great product, I reseeded my Lawn and it was perfect.
Strongly recommended product.
Great winter grass, grows fast.
Works well. Grows thin and high grass but green
Grass grows beautifully, Try it you would like it, just do it what do you have to lose if you need to grow grass.
the above statement is the results in my case. Great product
Nice start ! Late season planting, but this is Florida.
I can’t wait to see how it does in the spring.
Awesome seed!
Grew fast and thick before it got cold .
I didn’t use it yet.
Scotts lawnservice came by and said we had the best year in the area. The grass does very well in cooler weather. It struggled in the summer time. I purchased a second bag for overseeding.
Best deal available. Seed was fresh. Analysis was done a few months ago.
A great supplement to clay soil…
Good product grass was real green j
It was awesome just like before this is my third time ordering Black Beauty.
Grass grew slow steady and thick….many noticed and asked what kind and where I got it from.
Had a high traffic area on my lawn and Jonathan Green seed fixed it
to early to review Winter Survival Fall Fertilizer, 45 Pound. Suggest Spring/Summer 2020 for review.
Follow instructions and won’t be disappointed. So happy with this product. My lawn feels soft and fluffy compared to the bermuda grass that had overtaken my lawn. Killed it and started from scratch. 6 lbs for this small area. Paid off!
This program has worked wonders on my lawn – I now have nice thick grass and no crabgrass this year, which was a wonderful change from the lawn service I paid for for years. I always thought I would have to pay a professional service for my lawn to look great but this program works well and is easy to use!
Grass start growing within the first week, it’s looking great
The bag I received had a great printed on bag date. The effect was noticeable in the yard with significant Fall grass growth. Thanks.
Love the product will recomend to anyone.
Loved this grass seed!
I won’t really know until spring. So far it seems good.
I live in Oregon, and I’ve been struggling to have the perfect lawn. I planted this seed during the fall. I am hoping that in the spring it will come up nicely, and I may add more at that time as well. They have a very nice video that sold me on the product, and I hope that the grass will do as well as in the video. Sheesh, we live in Oregon, the grass capital! You’d think that I could grow grass!!
Great results
Came as expected. Followed instructions on the bag. Grass came in thick and dark green!
Not sure why other stuff was grown into the lawn while planting these seeds. But they appear pretty strong and grow out in less than 7 days
I live in the back of a large apt. complex, the area behind my apt. is very shady, the landscapers ignore it because management doesn’t come back there very often. It’s been many years since sine there has been any grass because it’s so shady. I just threw the seed out , no prep work, used a gallon jug to spread it the best I could. It started growing in about 9 or 10 days, I have green grass behind my apartment for the time in many years, The landscapers can’t ignore it anymore , now they have to mow it.
Used for lawn refurbish. seems good so far. will reapply in the spring to confirm,
somewhat spotty
The seed germinated in 14 days and its growing perfectly
Just seeded my yard check back with me in 10 days
Lawn looks great after this application. I bought a second one to put down 6 weeks later (now) for the long New England winter.
This seed quickly grew a beautiful, thick lawn. True Green killed my entire front lawn. I fired them and took lawn maintenance over myself. This seed is the best I’ve ever used. I live in northern NJ.
Won’t know until spring if it really did the intended job.
10 times better than the national brand. JG is now my main source of fertilization and soil treatments
The grass came up beautifully. Very happy did fall planting hope all is good for next spring! The grass is awesome.
Good color and price
I bought these seeds to patch some of the areas with thinning grass in my front lawn. The seeds are of great quality and easy to grow.
This is my second time buying this product and i was not disappointed. Germinated in exactly 7 days after aerating and seeding with starter feet, milorganite and light covering of peat moss to retain moisture. Nice dark green color, grows strong even on a slope with heavy fall rain and looks like a blanket. Even in the shade this grass will germinate and come in thick. During the summers here in N.C. (transition zone) the heat can be a monster with months of no rain and Avg temps in the mid 90’s so i did have some dieback and dormancy due to high heat, but the grass that survived bounced right back when the temps cooled down and fall finally arrived 3 weeks late lol. I suggest aeration, stater fert, milo, and peat moss as i have no weeds! The pics are after one month and i can already walk on it but I’d rather not until my first mow. And for best results, plant in the fall. I’m moving this summer but my next yard will be a JG yard!
FYI… my neighbor used Scott’s. My dominantion line is gonna be sick!
Too soon to rate the overall outcome, but as of today it looks as if 75-80% germinated and is doing well.
Will most likely lay again in summer or another mixture. May need to do a soil test as it was not as prosperous as I thought it would be.
This stuff is amazing we completely tilled the area didn’t add any store bought soil and layed the seed. Pictures are about 2 week apart. Within a month boom we have grass.
Hearty seed. Took off in 6 days.
My la n looks incredible such a big difference. Will use this for over seeding every year.
The product worked as described. As you can see from the pictures, the grass seeds grew. Although they were bare spots, I believe those were areas where I did not put enough seed. You can see in the 6-week picture how full the lawn is even with the bare spots. You will notice that the grass is bent over but that is because I used a leaf blower to blow the leaves out of the lawn.
People complained the seeds didn’t grow. Here are my tips: plant in the fall, put compost before seeding, use starter fertilizer, water twice a day for maybe 15 mins (this will vary depending on the sprinkler system you have) for first 3 weeks then once a day then every other day, mow after 4 weeks, add starter fertilizer again, switch to watering 1-1.5″ per week. I will be putting a winter fertilizer in the next week or two so it will be in good shape for next spring.
THIS SEED IS JUST THE BEST EVER. I WILL RECOMMEND THIS SEED TO EVERYONE. AFTER IT STARTED TO GROW I HAD RANDOM PASSER BYES STOP AND COMPLEMENT ME ON MY LAWN !!!!
Performed 100% as advertised. I followed seeding and fertilization instructions for overseeding, our lawn is now dark green, dense and with mower deck at 3 inches, it looks like plush carpet due to the wide, waxy blades of grass which are soft to the touch.
Got very good results with those seeds.
Worked great at a great price.
I have 2 chihuahuas an this works great for their brown spots
Product was damaged in shipping and combined with another damaged bag by Fed Ex. Who knows if I got the correct weight . Nothing wrong with Jonathan Greene, just the handling during shipping
The best grass seed I ever planted!! Lush, dark green, and so thick!
Grass comes up quick.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and these seeds have worked the best for re seeding repair that I have found. I used them this fall in 60 degree weather and results of thick growth was up in about 7-10 days.
I will know more next year.
Great seed
Used this to reseed bare spots on my lawn. Seed came up. Now I have a beautiful lawn once again.
Grass is growing like a champ!!! There has been no grass in this area for about 5 years. I highly recommend this grass for shaded and not so shaded areas!!!
Excellent
Grew fast filled in an area under summer pool quickly Great!
I added this mixed in with the seeds I usually use and it grew in better and darker green color
Really good seed
Hello! I wil use it next spring thank u I hope it works I Am sure it will thanks!!!
I applied in early fall on a less than one year old lawn. I’m really trying to push it hard during the fall growth season. I applied at rate on bag. Wow, the lawn popped with dark green color within 3-4 days! It’s looking great!
As I put the seed down mid October due to such hot weather in September followed by a vacation it is difficult to determine at this point how the seed will do. There is some seed that has come up but we are have temperatures below 60 degrees at night – not the ideal conditions to have planted seed. I will keep you posted in the spring. I may over seed in the early spring which of course is less than ideal. With all of that said I really did not give this seed a fair shot so it is difficult for me to give a fair review.
Not all planted have to wait until spring when it starts to grow.
Good product, lush green lawn
This is my first time overseeding an established area or seeding from scratch.
Most of the 5200sf that I overseeded was growing well, but really bumpy and loaded with weeds and moss. Overseeded at bag rate (2.5lbs/1000sf): 29 days later, I’m absolutely thrilled, especially since I wasn’t able to lower the height of the cut prior to overseeding, so I was worried that there wouldn’t be much seed to soil contact. That area was dense, thick and much more even than it had been.
As for the areas that were bare: Much of it was so compacted from being “the path from the house to the driveway”, and raking to get some loose soil sounded like I was raking concrete. Again, 29 days later, with topsoil, I am thrilled with the results. It’s not as thick as the 40+ year lawn, obviously… but with more time and attention, I am confident that I can get it there.
Planted the grass seed in an area of my yard where no grass had grown for several years because of the trees, but this is working.
It’s been a full season using Jonathan Green new American lawn program and I have to admit that my lawn looks great. I was skeptical of this program at first because I wasn’t sure all of the products included would work specifically for my lawn but they proved me wrong. The soil pH is high in Illinois where I live and it was great to find a program that could deal with my very hard soil and still keep the lawn weed free and very green!
Seedlings popped up within 2 weeks, which is great, now let’s see how the roots do next summer.
Perfect this grass seed.
I tried from home depot but doesn’t work.
Only Jonathan Green product is worked..
Highly recommended.
Even when I just spread on the garden it
After a few days growing up..
I love it…
Grass is growing good
If you water it, she will grow. Thick luscious green grass sprouting up to the heavens in my back yard. So succulent my friends like to lay in it and gaze at the stars in the midnight dew. Black Beauty Ultra is the GOAT.
Overseeded, watered, it grew and transformed my yard.
Excellent grass seed!
Great grass seed mix. Goes very far, and results are very fast. Used this with great success in areas that have never been able to grow grass.
Put down early October in Cincinnati, Oh. Kept it watered, came up well. So far, so good!
Great grass seed. Put some straw down after spreading and keep it wet.
Did the job
Grass is growing very well so far it has been about seven days with watering one or two times a day will review more once the grass has established more so far so good
First time using Johnathon Greens Black Beauty Ultra and I’m very happy so far. Started germinating in 5 days and it’s now going on 4 weeks and my lawn looks very nice. It still has a ways to go from being a newly renovated lawn( only soil) and adding fertilizer today for low potassium and nitrogen.
Worked perfect. Filled in patches and grass loos great.
I appreciated the quality of the seed but was hoping for it to be better rooting. i.e., We have soil, clay and sand mix
comes up quick
As the bag said, came up lush within 14 days. Over seeded the lawn
The cable system that controls product release was not the best
great 4 shade
I’ve used this for a few years every fall in dense shade areas and it works very well and I overseed to thicken up existing shaded grass
grows well.
Wish you’d ask for a review when its had seven days to grow. Thus far it hasn’t come up. But I received the product in a timely manner just as indicated when I ordered and its a big bag that should go far in bringing my lawn back to life.
Sorry I can’t take pictures to let folks know whether or not it grows fast and looks good.
waiting to see how it works
Sprouted really fast (within 5 days) so we didn’t lose a lot of seed in the 10 extra inches of rain that fell…
Picture shows the first mow after over-seeding and filling in some bare spots. Used magical plus, black Beauty ultra seed, and Jonathan green starter fertilized. Excellent germination rate. I dethatched lawn lawn really well with green works dethatcher, moved very short, applied products listed above in the same day. I did not rake the seed into soil. Watered three times a day for 6 minutes the first two weeks, then watered 25 minutes every other day for the last two weeks. Did this Sept 6th I’m Michigan when temps were still around 70 degrees during the day and dropping Down to 50-55 degrees at night.
This grass is beautiful. It came up in 8 days. Just have to make sure you keep it watered so that it germinates.
fAST GROWTH
Had to dethach my yard due to a lot of chemical burn from Trugreen service so I cancel my contract after 1 year and 9 months, I put down this, 2 bag of Jonathan Green 10315 Black Beauty Grass Seed Mix, 25-Pound and normal watering everyday 2 min. in the morning , 2 min. in the high noon, and 2 min. in the evening and 4 week late my yard is so plush and green with the best grass I can ever imagine, man I so impress that I had to drop a tear.
Yes, this product really works my yard is the best in the neighborhood.
The seed came up in 7 days. The pics were taken on day 9. We had lots of rain, even too much. Nevertheless all starts to grow now. On pic shows a test seeding now 6 weeks old. I‘m looking forward to the future. Now Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra will grow in Germany where I am from.
After trying to reseed parts of the lawn that are just dead for over 3 years with the generic big box grass seed, decided to try this, as I read a review from somebody in northern Virginia, who said it worked for them. Loosened the areas to be reseeded with a rake, threw some potting soil down in the patches, mixed in the grass seed, and watered. I am no expert level gardener. To my surprise, it grew ! Lovely, fresh, green grass. I will buy more and tackle the rest of the bare patches. Planted mid September and its now the beginning of October and coming in nicely. Previously, I had seeded in spring. Fall seems to work better round here. Will be buying more.
Very pleased with the results so far. The seed started germinating in 7 days being sewn on good soil and watered daily.
Good quality seen
Very pleased with this product. My lawn was in very poor condition, covered in several different weeds and bare spots. Prior to applying the soil food, I prepared the lawn; pulled all the weeds and raked my lawn, in the front and backyard. I mowed the lawn and did not water it for 5 days to make sure the soil was dry as recommended, then applied the soil food manually (didn’t have a spreader at the time), by mid June. I didn’t do anything else except for deep watering my lawn twice a week the whole summer. I had thought about over-seeding at times in summer, but then wanted to wait until fall, and now I see that I don’t need to plant grass seeds. About a few months later, now in fall, a thick healthy grass has been taking over all the weeds and bare areas. I’ll apply the soil food once a year in spring from now on.
Germination is slower than the big store seed
But
I’m liking the results since overseeding on Labor Day.
Daily watering is important.
I found some areas lagging on germination but found fault to be the sprinkler system, adjusted that and grass popped.
Will repeat process again next fall to build hopefully a great lawn.
Seedlings were over an inch tall after 2 weeks. I spread them around in October when the temp range was 69-82F with plenty of rain.
Awesome product got my grass from seeds in a week
My grass looks great, used for reseeding, and bear spots.
The seed germinates very quickly and does a great job covering the area seeded. One word of caution. If this grass gets even any indirect sun in the northeast Texas climate, the grass finally dies. It must be in total shade ALL the time to do well in Texas. I am hoping the grass that is in total shade stays healthy. I know it says DENSE SHADE grass and that is why I am giving it a five since it does what they say but again I am not too sure it can take the Texas heat even if it is in total shade.
Amazing at turning my dry concrete hard soil into soft moist soil my lawn loves this stuff !!!
In 13 years I’ve never had a “permanent” yard. Most years, I let crabgrass and other stuff rule my yard in the hot months. During cool months, I relied on annual ryegrass to keep my yard pretty.
This year I tried Jonathan Green products. Twice.
First time, things looked great, but died out after 4 weeks.
Second time, I applied grub killer to my yard. The results were amazing. I’ve never seen a better/greener/faster yard than with Johnathan Green Black Beauty Ultra. I’ve posted YouTube videos @David Deutscher.
Yes, it is expensive. But right now I’m doing a test between Black Beauty and Scotts Commercial. No comparison. Black Beauty will need mowing within two weeks.
Scotts continues to need water after two weeks.
I wish i could see the end result quicker
I am happy with this grass seed. It grew fast and is very green. Make sure top 3 inches or so of soil is loose and not compacted and water regularly. I will buy again
I am happy with this grass seed. It grew fast and is very green. Make sure top 3 inches or so of soil is loose and not compacted and water regularly. I will buy again
I bought this locally and just ordered more on Amazon. It was planted last week and is growing quite well in the Chicago area. I’m using it to overseed and repair a lot of empty spots under a big river birch tree.
One tip: don’t waste time making the lawn perfect for grass seed. I mowed to a shorter than normal level, I leave the grass clippings (all year), and I throw the grass seed by spreader and water lightly for a few days, more if it is dry. My lawn in back will never be great because of dogs, but at least it won’t be a mud pit.
My front lawn is beautiful under a maple tree. Leave your grass clippings— best thing you can do for your lawn.
After two weeks I got 80 percent success I will buy it again
Really works to grow beautiful grass in Densely Shaded Areas! I highly recommend this product as it really has given me very nice grass, relatively quickly on my very very shaded property.
Got this for a dense shaded area within a week the grass is coming in nicely. Will order more for sun/shade for the rest of my lawn. I tried another well known brand and had not one seed sprouted. Hopefully black beauty will be just as successful with the sun/shade mix as I was with the dense shade mix. A little on the higher price but if it works than its’ worth it to me, instead of wasting money on seed that doesn’t ever sprout. I would give it 5 stars but I don’t know yet how it will continue to grow and hold up yet.
Here are 2 before and after pics. This seed germinated nicely and quickly. I am in Northern Virginia, and let the summer destroy my lawn as I did not follow a good watering routine. I dethatched, aerated and over-seeded on September 3rd 2019, The pics shows the new grass after the first mow on Sept 24th 2019, in 21 days my grass was thick and healthy. I highly recommend this grass seed.
**make sure you do the prep work before seeding, also you must water the seed/lawn at least twice a day for 15-30 minutes to keep the ground moist to get the best results..
Great coverage
Seed on Saturday. Today is monday and I already have some grass sprouting up. I will update with my results after overseeding
Update 4 weeks later. Seed has spread and not been patchy. Very happy with the result to bad the firstbhard freeze will be here in a few days.
Great job as usual thanks
Picture was taken exactly 1 week after planting seed. Looks to be coming along quite nicely. Just be sure to water at least once per day, twice for good measure.
Will update after 2 weeks.
2nd pic is after 3 weeks since planting. Appears to be thriving, planted some more just beneath original area. A+
Outstanding results in a wet, shady area I have previously had trouble growing grass. I’ve tried all kinds of fescue mixes, rye mixes, and mixes advertised as dense shade. Just about every grass seed on the Internet that advertises as a shady mix. By far the best results were from this product. Time will tell how it holds up over the winter.
Excellent product
Will buy again
Grass seed… what is to review? It was cast, it was watered, it grew. That’s all….
This seed germinated quickly with twice-daily watering. Visible grass blades in about 7 days. Application was for new grass area. Approx 1in of new topsoil. Applied lime, new seed fertilizer, dense shade seed, and covered with straw. I believe my rotary spread application was not even and I would recommend perpendicular passes with the spreader for more even distribution.
This seed is wonderful. It germinated in less than 10 days and is thick and full. Best seed that I have used in my 38 years of working my lawn! My neighbors all want to know what i used this year!
This product is awesome ! Reseeded and spread the love my soil down and within a week all bare spots were thick and full. Going forward, I will be using twice a year!
I was wary to go with this program because I had never used Jonathan Green products before but I have to say I am very happy with the results.
I got my soil tested last year and have a very low pH and very hard soil. I wanted a lawn care solution that dealt with both of these issues. And I think this is it. I’m only two steps in so far but my lawn looks great. Especially the shady parts of my lawn that I haven’t been able to fix in the past.
These products have been the best working I’ve tried so far.
I don’t know what these people are doing that say the grass is slow to germinate. I used my aerator, put down Scott’s starter fertilizer and this seed. 7 days later I have small grass sprouting up. The photo is 5 weeks after seeding.
My bag was dated June 2019 its September 2019.
…that grass sprouted in shade in about 8 days. Very pretty green color too. I did use their Love Your Soil product when I seeded but do not know if this made a difference. Terrific product. Highly recommend.
Love this product
Thing to know. Use a lot of seeds. After seeding once and experimenting, I found best results where I seeded pretty thickly. I raked then then threw seeds out and then watered about 5-10 min a day depending on heat/weather. Bag says 2-3 weeks to sprout but I saw green in about a week. Super green when it’s sprouting. We’ll see how it does long term, but I’m pleased with the start. I bought a second round to fill in my lack of spread consistency in my first try. I was trying to seed a pretty big area. My yard is super shaded and completely treed and this grass is still growing. I’m about 3 weeks into the process and I’d say my shoots are about an inch and a half maybe 2 inches. I just threw out the second batch of seed so we’ll see how that does. Will update this review as I see how it does. I gave presentation 4 stars because I want to see how it does longer term and whether it holds at the first mowing, etc.
The grass was planted in May (not ideal) under an oak tree. Most of it survived Oklahoma’s brutal summer with minimal watering once established.
I had grass shoots within 6 days in a heavily shaded area. Outperformed Scott’s Sun & Shade! Grass is now 4 in high in 8 days!
I hardly prepped my lawn and this program still worked great! Easy to use and cheaper than other products I’ve used in the past!
This seed is amazing!! I replaced the gravel inside the retaining wall with this seed. The entire area is all rocky clay so I was sceptical that I could get anything to grow without a ton of work. However, I did nothing else other than spread the seed and cover it with a thin layer of leftover potting soil to keep the birds from eating it. Picture #1 is day 3 and picture #2 is day 8. The entire area gets no sun at all. Thank you Jonathan Green!! Highly recommended.
This is the second 25 lb bag we have used this year on a shady section of our backyard ! By far the best grass seed ever. Two of our neighbor’s have asked what we used, so expect more customers
I like the % germination rate,,,, most of the seed grew. Recommended
Grass grew fast but literally died right away 🙁 Not sure what happened. Doesn’t seem very hearty and strong
Nice
I planted this seed in Texas on a Sunday evening in September and by Wednesday morning I had a good amount of grass already growing. PERFECT!! Will definitely buy again if needed!!
Put the seed down last Thursday on bare spots in the backyard, also used the Jonathan Green sodding and seeding fert and Love Your Soil, topdressed with some peat moss. Today is Monday and already seeing some growth with once to twice a day watering (it hasn’t been too warm). Hopefully it fills in properly.
My yard went from worst to first with Jonathan Greene products all there stuff is #1
I tried this product to repair bare patches in my backyard lawn. Germination takes about 1-2 weeks to get 2 inches tall. New grass looks uniform and great, much better than another mixed seed product with a cheaper price.
I just put this down a week ago and the brown spots in my lawn are turning green! I am very impressed. I live in Washington State. My lawn is about 12,000 square feet and has had some problems with soil compaction for 3 years now.
I am looking to use the enzyme version in early spring.
I am going to try the year round treatment plan.
I’m very committed to using no pesticides on my property. I shop for organic foods in the supermarket so why not care for my lawn the same way? I haven’t finished the program yet but so far I’m super pleased!
Finally time to plant new grass and I am amazed with this seed! I actually saw growth within 3 days now a week after planting and daily watering (Did not luck out with any rain) and I am not exaggerating, the grass is 5 to 6 inches high and no bare spots, amazing!!! my soil is not even that great and some is in full shade, some in partial and some in no shade with no visible difference in the growth results. I seeded bare dirt along with this starter food (maybe this had something to do with it?)
Planted in spring in Texas, the spring was a wet one. The summer was dry and the grass that started well turned brown and stayed that way for several weeks. Then rain came in late August and most of the grass came back strong.
Fastest growing seed I’ve ever applied
My pets spend more time on my lawn than I do, so organics was the only choice that made sense to me. I’m happy that Jonathan Green has an organic lawn program option that actually works.
We are very pleased with this grass seed ! It grows really fast .
delivery excellent, presentation and packing looks great, weather here not a good time to use but willlet know….
Grew fast in dense shade and has held up to georgia heat and drought
ordered this as i have a big yard but was disappointed when almost nothing grew now i just have little patches of grass instead of a full yard. wouldn’t buy again
Great product. Got really good results. First time laying down seed ever and it was practically fool proof if you have some idea what you’re doing. Accidentally left sprinkler on for an hour and didn’t have all the proper tools but still got ^% of germination. Will definitely be buying this product again!
spread good and has already started to come up after 5 days
I used this to cover a whole section of my backyard where the dogs dug up, and along the new sidewalk we replaced. It says 10-14 days to germinate but this is my new grass after day 5. I’m very happy with it. It took me a whole day but I spread the entire bag by hand, as well as sprinkled dirt by hand to make sure it was a thin layer on top.
This is day 8! Grows incredibly fast and it’s a gorgeous dark green… cant wait to see what it looks like after 14 days!
No sign of grass please refund my money!
Worked well!
reseeding.quickest and best fill in in 25 years.
Completely recovered a large patch of grass killed off by dog urine. Impressive
i wanted a fast growing seed. these seeds are so good. Fast growing in sun or shade. the seeds are like magic beans. grows fast///
I was very skeptical of the rapid growth n some of the reviews I had read but still took a chance and ordered 2 5lb bags to get sum grass in before the winter and WOW IT really came in fast 6 days n yes it’s a little thinner then I’d like but it is still lovely n does the job perfectly for a rush job n not expecting a miracle but I’ve gotten lots of compliments on our lawn thanks to Jonathan Greene’s fast grow grass even have a few friends going to order now because they loved the result
I have grass !
After just a couple days I can see the seeds forming into grass!!! Very shaded area under big trees that unfortunately haven’t let my grass grow till now!
Good grass seed. After only one week, it seems to be growing well. We are watering it twice a day and is looking good.
NONE
Grows under a dense 20′ red jap maple. Basically was pure dirt/mud.. area was heavily tread. Did the trick. Used peat moss and lightly incorporated water gel crystals. Never even watered it w/ 2019 rain in CNY.
I just broadcasted it with my hand a month ago and haven’t seen any tell tale signs of grubs. For me it was worth the price since I’ve got enough for a couple more years and one application from lawn care was over $50.
We’ll see if it sticks but I’ve never seen germination in only 4 days!
Fast growing
By this time of year I’ve usually have a lawn full of crabgrass but not this year. The Jonathan Green Green-Up and Crabgrass Preventer fertilizer worked better than other crabgrass preventers I’ve used.
It greened up my lawn just as good as Scotts but the color lasted longer and NO CRABGRASS! Jonathan Green works and I’m not constantly battling my lawn anymore.
Hands down best turf I’ve ever had in my 23 Years Of home ownership
I like it so much I bought another bag!
It’s August and the grass in the shade looks great
Best stuff I have ever found.
This think really works….
Works as intended. Grew in places we didn’t expect it to work at all.
Worked in some places and not in others
I developed a small patch of fungus in my lawn and one application of this and it was all cleared up. I was really impressed with how fast it treated the area. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to treat lawn fungus. I swear by Jonathan Green products, they’re the best!
it never came up
My lawn looks great! Only complaint is that the Corn Gluten fertilizer is a bit dusty so I would not spread it on a windy day.
Hello,
Just like to say I’m VERY IMPRESSED with your product grows fast and looks AMAZING
Thanks
Happy customer in WV
Excellent
We took out some plants that were there for years and were growing very well. So we planted this grass and it works wonderfully! Grew fast and full. Great for spots that you need to fill in.
Never used grass seed before and cannot believe it grew so fast and grew so well. Amazing. Planted it around base of my big fir tree where is in total shade and also other areas with the leftover seed. Grew everywhere.
Grew fast and looks great
Good germination. Thriving where no other seed has.
There was an area of my yard along the back fence that was muddy with no grass. I sprinkled a layer of black beauty heavy traffic seed on the are and within literally days if was filling in. It is amazing, I will continue to buy this brand and I have no intension of going back to Scotts brand at all.
Came in very good. Will have to wait and see how it does over winter and what comes up in spring. Very satisfied thus far.
Expensive but it grows where others didn’t.
I don’t leave reviews often, but this product disproves it. Grass growths unbelievably fast. The picture was taken 9 days after I put the seed down.
Grew great!
Good seed
Works well and looks good. Use it for bare spots and over seeding.
Great product
Worked better than I had hoped!
Great product for lawns
I have an area in the back of my house that literally gets no sun at all, I moved in two years ago and nothing has grown there… not even weeds.
I tried this on a whim because it was a fair price and the reviews were pretty good. I am not disappointed in any way. This product Surprised the crap out of me! The photo attached is about a week and a half or so.
I ordered another bag.
I was at first skeptical because we have tried many different ,supposedly the ultimate grass seed.
However, Jonathan green delivered.! I have 3 large dogs and I foster rescue dogs and our yard gets torn up!
I threw this seed dow, no prep and we had had a lot of rain and in 4 days it exploded! Long green blades everywhere.
SO far it is holding up tp the dogs. and is still growing. I did a second sow and used straw over it and we had a ton of rain the straw helped hold it and again an explosion and grass is growing in the weeds! I just threw this seed everywhere . I will be getting more to do another sowing for fall. Totally worth the money!!
I did blend this product with another brand, so I can’t say – with certainty – that these seeds germinated. But the lawn under a huge shade tree came up nicely – so I’ll have to say, overall, it was a success. The seed did take almost 2 weeks to start to germinate — I thought it should have came up quicker considering the ideal weather conditions and that I sowed the seeds before the shade tree leafed out to give them optimum sun – along with watering daily. They came up quite thin and sparse at first — I’d say it took a good month before it could be safely mowed without damaging the baby shoots. Even now (early summer) I’d have to say the lawn did not come up as thick as I had hoped for — but I’m ok with the result, considering I could never get a blade of grass to grow in the bare spots for almost 10 years. So this year I turned over the soil with a tiller early in the year, added peat moss and other nutrients and started from scratch with a new lawn — definitely the best lawn I’ve had in 10 years.
Nice
Nice
We had a few areas where we needed new lawn. After trying a dozen or so other varieties through the years, often with mixed results, I wanted to try something different so I went with Jonathan Green Original.
The first, and largest area, was where we once had over 40 trees removed in early 2018. It is a large area and has steep slopes. The second area was in the front of the house where we had to dig up our below-grade wellhead to replace the well pump. I planted the seed on Easter Day this year (2019) using a commercial over-seeder for both locations. I used Scott’s starter fertilizer in all of the locations. It was a cold, rainy and mostly cloudy spring here in Connecticut. Germination took over 20 days. I even had the water sprinklers going three times a day for 15 minutes each time. I admit I was getting worried, but was thrilled when I saw some shoots coming up. After the grass germinated, it took nearly 6 weeks before it was high enough to mow it. I attribute that to the lousy weather and colder than average days.
I am now into early July. The old grass in the front, over the well (as you can see in the photo with the dark green patch and the lighter green grass all around it) has not been fertilized since Easter. There is a MAJOR difference between the J Green grass and the old lawn around it. The new grass is darker. It stays upright even after driving over it with my Kubota. It is much more draught tolerant as it’s still healthy even as the original grass around it is wilting in the July heat. The lawn in the back is the same. Thick, dark green and healthy.
The soil in the back yard is interesting. There are areas where there were thick beds of stump material from stump grinding and it’s kind of spongy. There are areas where the soil is in fact “top soil” with no sand, but it’s hard and compacted. And then there are areas with a high percentage of mixed in wood chips. As the arborists used a wood chipper to chip up the ten foot high pile of trees, I had a large pile of wood chips leftover. I knew I was taking a risk, but I spread those chips in the lowest area to raise it up a bit. The grass is growing well in all of the soil types, except the area raised with wood chips. I am not surprised really, and will spread compost over the top to revitalize it a bit. This is a perfect example of how the health of your soil is directly attributed to the health of your grass!
I am very pleased. So much so that I may kill off the old lawn and restart completely with Jonathan Green. If I could give this seed an 11 I would!
Pricey—but worth it if you want a quality seed and excellent germination rate.
Excellent N-P-K ratio (12-18-8) for prepping yard or seedbed for over seeding or turf installation. This does make a difference. Clean, efficient, and effective. Pricey, but worth it.
Very good product and produces a dark green lawn. Highly recommend this product
Product as described. I would recommend this item.
This product was everything the manufacturer claim it to be. The price was good, easy to apply and the grass grow fast. I will use this product again
Great coverage and a great lawn to go barefooted in.
1st treatment already seems to have helped
Great product!
In the past I fertilized my lawn in the summer but have always had disease issues afterwards. Mag-I-Cal Plus for Alkaline Soils works really well. My lawn greened up quickly and to date no disease in my lawn this year.
This seed is coming up like gangbusters. Will order more. Great stuff.
Awesome Grass Seed
Great product only 4 treatments for the year!
Nice product quality, cost and timeliness
Grass took too long to grow
I Overseeded and used for dry spots.. better then any other seed I have tried.
Talk about Magic..My lawn was in very poor shape…after plenty or research on how to use Johnathen green products guess what? Every lawn needs magical period…i tested it and the areas without magical barely filled in even after using green up and jg weed and feed…and water…very slow growth
.but after the magical OMG the lawn started filling in full and Thick…..my lawn went from poor to one of the best lawns in town…
Working great. Thanks got the patching. Lawn looks great!
I got this and Scott’s. Hands down this grew fast and is awesome! It was sprouted after 5 days. Great product. Half of the Scott’s didn’t come up and same after a month (see 2nd photo for Scott’s).
I’ve tried several other grass seed mixes from local places and from the usual folks (Scott’s, Pennington). Nothing has worked as well as this for my lawn.
I’m in Maryland, and have very sandy soil. Most grass seeds I’ve seen either fail to germinate, or die off within a month or two 90 degree+ weather (mostly because I am terrible about watering regularly). I overseeded what was essentially a crab grass lawn with this, and much to my surprise, it has flourished. It’s doing great in the full-sun parts of my yard as well as the densely shaded front yard with little work on my part. I definitely recommend it.
Top shelf grass seed as other reviews mentioned as well.
I love this. You can pretty much grow grass on a rock. Best ever.
Great soil product.
Seeded in fall. .great results
Once again, Jonathan Green has scored a great product. The seed germinated and started growing within two to three weeks. I have a partially shaded area to contend with that does not hold up well during heavy rainfalls. In spite of the wetness, the new seed grew very well and my bare areas are now covered. I did over seed – and it worked!
Super seeds
great results
Phenomenal product!
Great Buy! Works as advertised!
I’ve tried many different grass seeds and I like this very much………In my opinion Lesco premium sun and shade works the best for me……
Trying to make the grass grow
One of the best I have ever tried. It germinated in about six days.
Grass is lush and green under the giant oak and maple trees now. Looks beautiful
Bare spots that i couldn’t fix with other brands for months. Lush grass in weeks. Steroids seed.
It not idea for the sun, the new grass is dying. It does grow fast and thin.
My backyard was a mud pit from my 4 large dogs. This seed is just awesome. It grew where nothing else would grow even with them stomping on it.
OMG fast growing and beautiful
I like this grass seed. I have already ordered another bag and recommended this product to my brother.
The only grass seed available to non professional people who are going for a beautiful lawn. Germinates fast. I did have crabgrass invade but its too new to treat for a prevent. No bare spots
I’ve been putting down this Shady Nooks grass seed for the past two years, and it’s really the only grass mixture I can get to take in our woodsy, sandy yard. We actually have more moss than grass, lots of shade and dappled sun, and sandy/gravelly soil-those are the conditions I have to deal with.
This stuff germinates well, and covers the bare spots. It’s a little bit expensive, but I wasted money on the cheap stuff. This works.
Perfect
Very nice
I highly recommend the grass seed. I used miss to aid in the germination and growth. The results are great
I live in the Dallas area, hope it survives the summer. Time will tell
I have three big trees in my yard and it is hard to grow grass in the shade. I used Johnathan Green Deep Shade seed and grass started growing right away. Time will tell if it continues to grow and will stay strong all summer. I am pleased how quickly it started growing.
I hated my lawn last year in 2018. Towards the Fall season of 2018, I decided to give this seed a try! I thatched, aeriated, limed, and fertilized with Scotts. I applied a lot of this seed! I doubled their rate for over-seeding… Look at the difference between my neighbors on the right and my Johnathon Lawn… Thank you Mr Green . lol I’m hooked… Big difference, huh? It works…
Used to seed very shady area. Germination happened quickly and easily
It has been approximately 10 days since planting. I roto-tilled the ground, laid a layer of top soil, spread the seed, put down a thin layer of top soil and followed with thin layer of grass clippings. I watered to wet the ground every other day (no pooling). I am beginning to see some new grass in a very few spots. We have very poor hard dirt in this part of Wyoming, but after breaking it up and putting down top soil I expected better results. I had better results several years ago with seed advertised on TV to grow on anything. In that case I did not put down top soil or break up the ground and got much quicker and better results and it was less expensive. I am giving this seed 4 stars hoping that with time it will germinate more. The worst area of the lawn had been damaged just over a year ago when the neighbor had the gravel, in her yard, sprayed for weeds and the run off from that came into our yard killing a large strip of grass. I extensively tilled the soil in this area and put in top soil in hopes of rejuvenating this soil so the grass would take hold, so far no positive results from this seed. I am still giving 4 stars since it may take a little longer to germinate and there are all the other environmental problems also. I think the price point was somewhat high for this seed.
I am updating my review. A few days after my first review and 2 natural rains the grass seed took off. You could almost watch it grow. It responds much better to rain water than residential water. It filled in the entire strip that had accidentally gotten poisoned last summer. I now have areas that have grass that have been bare for years. I have almost an entire yard of healthy grass and it is improving daily. I have had excellent results now and am upping my review to 5 stars.
Works good with other fertilizers
This grass is the best I have ever seen. I am also allergic to grass but this stuff doesn’t bother me a bit when I cut it. Like all new growth it needs to be babied but once established you won’t be disappointed. I am in Oklahoma and this stayed green until January. About a month to a month and a half later it was green again. The pictures were taken in March 2019
Although its bagged for Winter and good for multiple grasses during that season, this blend makes for a great Summer fertilizer for a Centipede lawn. Low Nitrogen, no Phosphorus, and a nice amount of special K. Don’t let the Winter label hold you back
Will buy again. Perfect seed mix for sun and shade. Grass has filled in nicely
Product met my expectation.
It’s a liiiiitle pricey, but it makes for beautiful lawns. It took me some work to get it going, but once it took it changed my lawn. I love you Mr Green.
I get a few bags every year to make my lawn look thicker, never disappoints. Grows fast and easy
I have lived in my house for 12 years and my front yard is almost all shade I have tried everything (including sod that died in year two, yes I watered it) on this yard, grass seed, clover you name it hell I would have been happy with crab grass. I started with all dirt that’s how bad the “lawn” was I power raked it and simply spread the seed (I did not put any loom over the seed but did put a half a bag of scotts turf builder lawn food I had from the year before) and watered the heck out of it everyday by day 6 you could see it sprouting and by day 10 full lawn green and plush. Try it you won’t be disappointed.
First time making a lawn and using this seed. I used 2 50lb bags for a new construction 7,000sqft lawn in the Olympic Peninsula of WA state. I learned I should’ve used a preemergent like Tenacity at the time of seeding since I used compost as a base and the weeds took off at first. However, after about 8 weeks the grass thickened up so much that I hardly notice the weeds. I’ve already mowed 3 times since week 5 and this weekend I’ll be spot spraying with 24d to clear out the weeds. This grass is a super thick, super dark green, super soft grass. I can’t wait for lawn games with the kids.
All the other grasses in the neighborhood are already showing signs of heat stress and this stuff looks like it’ll keep on staying green with out fertilizer all summer. I’m so happy with this grass, I have 100,000 more sqft of lawn I’m going to try this on at different homes in my neighborhood. I’ll be buying a lot more Jonathan Green.
Just reserved a few month again and the transformation has been great, nice not having bare spots, can’t wait to see next spring
perfect
Excellent NPK ratio for young grass seeds and very quick greening. I generally use organic fertilizers; however, for clean and effective fertilizer for the home lawn this product is the best I have used so far. Pellets arrived intact, fresh, and ready to spread. Very little dust or residue. I will definitely buy and use again.
Turns very green except there’s quite a few Clover mixed in
Great grass seed. Grow quickly. I bought 12 bags total. Each 3 pound bag is said to covers about 400 sq. feet. Really covers about 250 sq. feet if your using it to cover a bare area. That being said it works great, thus the reason I bought 12 bags. Will buy again.
Grow fast grows green and not patchy at all !!!
This stuff works, I thought it would be all right like other granular weed preventers – but dang it blew crabgrass out of the park. Easily 97% of my lawn is crabgrass free now – perhaps 50% was crabgrass free last summer without use. I live in Minnesota, applied April 21 and it is now early June and the lawn is full of beautiful Fescues, with minor amount of crabgrass/other grassy weeds. As a note: the amount of plantain/broadleaf weeds is maybe 3% of what it was before use too. Will purchase again and add to my lawn care regimen.
Wow does this come up fast. We overseedded with it and the grass is sooo thick. We couldn’t get grass to grow in this area for 14 years. Now we’ve got a thick front yard. Probably didn’t need to overseed. Bought more for other thin areas on our acreage.
I was a little apprehensive about this product. I had tried other name brand in the past with no results. This bad boy really grew grass. And it’s thick and lush. I am obsessed. I only used in a few bald spots on our lawn to see how it would do. I plan to finish the lawn this summer. I also noticed a little goes a long way.
Meh. Didn’t see anything quite spectacular about this compared to less expensive iron supplements.
I decide to star all over with my yard i use to have an ugly grass in my yard so i decide to kill my lawn and star over .. i have heard alot good things abut Jonathan green black beauty ultra grass and I’m so glad i buy this grass after i plant the grass seed 5 days later star to germinate and 2 weeks later my grass is almost 3 inches tall i just can’t believe how awesome this product is. so happy about it
Liked the dark green color , just as dark as my kbg
Grass seed lives up to expectations.
