The Right Time to Plant
Connecticut, Massachusetts & Rhode Island: The best time to plant your lawn in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island is in late summer/early fall (mid-August to mid-September). The cooler air temperatures and warm soil temperatures at this time of year are better for grass growth. The second-best time for planting is spring (mid-March to late April), but be sure daytime temperatures have warmed up 60° to 70°F before you start.
Maine, New Hampshire & Vermont: The ideal time to plant grass seed in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont is late summer/early fall (mid-August to mid-September). The soil is still quite warm at this time of year (60° to 70° F),, which is necessary for optimum seed germination, and the cooler air temperatures and rainfall are idea; for grass growth. You will also have less competition from summer weeds, such as crabgrass.
Prepare Your Soil
Before you lay any seed down, the soil must be at the right pH and must be aerated and loosened to allow for proper root growth.
MAG-I-CAL® is specially formulated to quickly raise or lower your soil to the ideal pH range of between 6.2 and 7.0. For pH that falls below 6.2, use Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Acidic & Hard Soil. For pH that is above 7, use Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Alkaline & Hard Soil. (You can purchase a Soil pH Test Kit for Lawns from us or any local hardware or garden supply store.)
Once you’ve corrected the soil pH, loosen and aerate it for best root growth. This can be done with Love Your Soil®. This innovative soil treatment activates the microbes within the soil. Once activated, the microbes allow for nutrients to be easily absorbed by the grass roots, resulting in stronger, heartier grass. Both of these products can be applied right before laying down new seed.
