Fertilizing Weeds

Moss will thrive in your lawn in low pH (acidic) soil conditions. Discover the best moss killer at Jonathan Green, and feed your soil to achieve optimal growth, health and color.

At Jonathan Green, lush green lawns are our business. We have been perfecting the art of green lawns since 1881, and have continued the tradition for five generations. We employ the latest scientific technology and research to ensure that we have the best products on the market to help you grow a strong, healthy, dark- green lawn.

Solving Moss Problems in Lawns

Moss often thrives in lawns because of too much shade, compacted soils, poorly drained soils, low soil fertility, low soil pH, and poor air circulation. Other causes include poor lawn care, including improper mowing and inadequate fertilization.

Since moss is an indication of both compacted and acidic soil, you can rapidly raise soil pH, loosen hard soil and stimulate soil microbes with Jonathan Green Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Acidic & Hard Soil. This natural, humate-rich, three-in-one “soil food” is also fortified with a patented, quick-releasing gypsum to help break up clay and compacted soil for better air, water, and root penetration into the soil.

Grass seed grows best in soil with a pH value between 6.2 to 7.0. Improperly balanced soil pH is a problem that affects the ability of grass plants to utilize nutrients from the soil. It is also associated with weed proliferation and the occurrence of moss in the lawn.

For very compacted soil, apply Love Your Soil®.  Though Love Your Soil® does not adjust soil pH, it contains about 25% more soil loosening power than Mag-I-Cal Plus® and will help break up compaction and improve drainage. So if soil compaction, which can be determined by standing water after a downpour, is your problem, Love Your Soil® is the answer!

While core aeration can help temporarily, adding more humate-rich, gypsum-based amendments like MAG-I-CAL Plus® and Love Your Soil® to the soil will give you better long-term aeration of the soil and long-term success on your lawn. These products can be applied to lawns at any time of the year to keep your soil biology and chemistry balanced.

Now that you have improved your soil with MAG-I-CAL Plus® and Love Your Soil®, lightly rake the lawn to remove leaves and dead grass. Mow it to expose the moss, and apply Jonathan Green Lawn Moss Control with a spreader at the recommended rates.

Jonathan Green Lawn Moss Control kills lawn moss quickly. It is easy to spread and contains 50% more active ingredients per 5,000 sq. ft. bag than other brands of moss killer. Water the lawn immediately after application, be careful not to spill the product on concrete or painted surfaces because it could stain, and delay seeding for two weeks..

Finally, using Jonathan Green’s Organic Lawn Food will feed the soil microbes that are responsible for the recycling of organic matter in the soil and improve the soil’s structure and water-holding capacity.

If you want a healthy, beautiful lawn, then you need to feed your grass plants and soil instead of helping the moss. The best moss killer is available at Jonathan Green. Visit us online at JonathanGreen.com or visit your nearest independent retail store for more lawn care advice.
