Best Time to Apply Moss Killer to Lawn

4 min read

Acidic soil, soil compaction, poor drainage, and too much shade are the most common causes of moss in lawns. The professionals at Jonathan Green offer tips on the best time to apply moss killer and on how to prevent moss from recurring.

The Jonathan Green name has represented genetically superior grass seed, innovation, integrity, determination, and a commitment to excellence since 1881. Today, six generations later, we remain committed to producing superior lawn and garden products.

We supply cool season grass seed, soil enhancers, fertilizer, and organic lawn and garden products to professional customers, such as sod growers and independent garden centers and hardware stores, across the United States.

When Should I Apply Moss Killer?

To kill moss, it must be actively growing. Late spring/early summer or late summer/early fall, when the weather is warm but not hot, is the ideal time to apply a moss killer, but do not apply the product to newly seeded lawns until after three or four mowings.

Jonathan Green Lawn Moss Control kills lawn moss quickly and can be used anytime moss is a problem.  It contains 50% more active ingredient per 5,000 sq. ft. bag than other brands for superior control.

Rake the lawn lightly to remove leaves and dead grass. Then mow the lawn to expose the moss, and apply the fine granular particles with a spreader at the recommended rates. To speed up the killing action, water the lawn after application.

Be sure to remove any spillage immediately by sweeping off sidewalks, driveways, and other concrete or painted surfaces to prevent staining. Delay seeding for two weeks after application.

How to Discourage Lawn Moss

Raise the Soil pH – Moss thrives in low pH soil conditions. Apply Jonathan Green Mag-I-Cal® for Lawns in Acidic Soil to raise the soil’s pH to a value between 6.2 and 7.0. MAG-I-CAL® is a highly soluble form of calcium carbonate that can be applied anytime during the growing season. One bag is equal to about 5 bags of regular pelletized limestone, and it can even be applied on the soil right before seeding or laying down sod.

Break Up Soil Compaction – Once you have balanced the pH level of the soil, we recommend using Jonathan Green Love Your Soil® to loosen and aerate it, improve drainage, and make it easier for grass plant roots to grow.  Love Your Soil® also activates the microbes in the soil to make the nutrients from fertilizer easier for the grass roots to absorb, resulting in stronger, healthier turf.

Choose the Best Seed – Now that the soil has been properly prepared, purchase Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Dense Shade Grass Seed for the medium or densely shaded areas of your lawn. It contains naturally insect-resistant endophytic turfgrass varieties that help to deter insects. Use a spreader to apply the seed and make sure to rake the seed into the surface of the soil. Good seed to soil contact is crucial for seed germination.

To encourage more sunlight for a stronger, healthier lawn, thin tree limbs and trim back any other plants or bushes that surround the lawn. Grass plants need plenty of sunlight in order to properly photosynthesize and thrive.
