How Can I Make My Grass Thicker and Greener?

Seeding Lawn Basics
4 min read

How can you make your grass thicker and greener? Many grass problems can be attributed to soil that is not healthy. With the right products and advice from Jonathan Green, you can build and maintain a beautiful, dark green lawn.

Lush green lawns are our business at Jonathan Green. We are innovators and leaders in creating the finest quality grass seed and have been improving our genetically superior grass seed since 1881.

How to Get a Thicker, Greener Lawn

Improve the Soil

Soil pH is a very important factor in lawn health – if too acidic or too alkaline, your grass won’t be able to absorb nutrients properly. Lawns grow best in a soil that is slightly acidic to neutral (between 6.2 and a 7.0 on the pH scale).

Use the Jonathan Green Soil pH Test Kit for Lawns to determine the pH of your soil in just five minutes. The kit includes one test tube, one capsule of powder, and one pH range card to evaluate the results. It is important to use either distilled water or rainwater when performing this test in order to get accurate pH readings. Tap water is pH adjusted by the water company.

For professional quality testing, try Jonathan Green’s Pro pH & Moisture Soil Tester which quickly and accurately measures soil pH and moisture levels to within 0.2 pH and a 10% moisture level.

Overseed the Lawn

Overseeding, which involves adding new seed to your existing lawn, gives you an opportunity to improve your lawn’s quality and make it thicker.

For the best results, we recommend overseeding your lawn with Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed, which is similar to the grass seed mixture planted by sod growers on their farms. The mixture has species diversity and contains exclusive, elite varieties of tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass.

These grasses grow a naturally dark-green and beautiful lawn with excellent heat and drought tolerance.  Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed germinates in about 14 days and will improve any lawn it is overseeded into. Once you’ve seen a Black Beauty® Ultra lawn you’ll never forget it!

Fertilize

Lawn grasses need food, just like other plants, but rain and irrigation can cause nutrients in soil to leach away. Regular fertilization throughout the growing season helps provide the nutrients your grass needs for thicker, healthier, and greener growth.

Jonathan Green’s Veri-Green Nitrogen Rich Lawn Fertilizer is a quick, deep greening fertilizer that can be used on all types of turfgrass and will feed the lawn for up to three months.

The polymer-coated nitrogen in this product provides a slow and steady food release, preventing a surge of grass growth in the early spring, which reduces grass clippings when mowing. Veri-Green is the best fertilizer to use in the early spring if crabgrass is not present.

Irrigate

Many homeowners over-water their lawns, thinking that more water will make the lawn greener. This is not usually the case.

Established lawns typically need no more than about one inch of water a week, which translates to 20 or 30 minutes per zone, watering once or twice every week. This will help the roots of the grass grow deep into the ground and make the lawn more drought-tolerant.

Water in the early morning to avoid excessive evaporation. If the weather is hot and dry, increase the frequency of watering to three or four times per week at 20 to 30 minutes per zone.
