How to Amend Soil
Find out how to amend your soil in order to give your grass the best chance to grow. Your soil must be free of compaction, possess healthy microbial populations, and have the correct pH, or your “great lawn” journey will not happen. Jonathan Green’s New American Lawn Plan provides everything you need to know about lawn and soil care.
Jonathan Green has worked for more than 100 years to bring beautiful dark-green lawns to homeowners using only the highest quality traditional and organic products. Since 1881, we have experimented with turfgrass varietals to breed our genetically superior turf grasses, such as those found in our Black Beauty® grass seed mixtures.
We supply grass seed, organics, and weed, insect, and disease control products to homeowners as well as the independent retailer and professional lawn care markets. All of our products are rigorously tested to ensure that they perform to the highest standards in order to transform your lawn and help it thrive.
The New American Lawn Plan
Are you always fighting weeds, insects, and fungus in your lawn? These problems are, in many cases, symptoms of poor soil management. A healthy soil is the key to a healthy lawn. You can develop a healthy soil by feeding the microbes and earthworms in it with our natural “soil foods.”
The basic idea behind the New American Lawn Plan is to manage your lawn’s natural growing conditions, including the soil, in order to achieve an attractive, healthy lawn while using much less fertilizer and chemical inputs. This can be done by correcting and maintaining your soil’s pH and by reducing soil compaction, another main culprit in the ability of lawn grasses to thrive.
Essentially, great lawns are as easy as U-S-A. The New American Lawn Plan involves:
- Using genetically superior Black Beauty® grass seed.
- Stopping soil compaction and stimulating microbial activity with Love Your Soil®.
- Adjusting the soil pH with Mag-I-Cal® Plus
The New American Lawn Plan will change the way you care for your lawn… and for the better! It helps create the correct sub-soil conditions for the turf by using our unique “soil foods”. Yes, SOIL foods like Mag-I-Cal® Plus!
Why should you integrate “soil foods” into your lawn feeding program? The benefits of using our natural soil amendments include improved disease and insect resistance, better heat tolerance, and, most importantly, a biologically active soil.
Loose soil allows air, water, and roots to penetrate more deeply into the soil. Proper soil pH levels ensure the full release of lawn fertilizer nutrients to the grass plants. Enhanced microbial activity in the soil helps breakdown “trapped” nutrients that often never get absorbed by the grass. These three soil factors will create the right foundation for your lawn to flourish year after year.
Jonathan Green Mag-I-Cal® Plus is a natural, humate-rich, three-in-one “soil food” that will loosen hard soil, stimulate soil microbes, and adjust soil pH. It breaks up compacted soil for better air, water, nutrient, and root penetration. It is available for Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Acidic & Hard Soil or Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Alkaline & Hard Soil. Plan to use it every season to keep your soil biology and chemistry balanced.
For soil that is very compacted, you can also use Jonathan Green Love Your Soil® by itself to loosen and aerate it organically. Love Your Soil® will also feed soil microbes, make the soil more alive and porous, enhance root development, and provide about 25% more soil-loosening power than Mag-I-Cal® Plus.
