Lawn Food for Summer

Fertilizing Summer
4 min read

To look their best, lawns should be fed during the peak growing months from spring through fall.  If you apply lawn food just once or twice a year, it will not be enough to maintain a healthy growing lawn. The experts at Jonathan Green offer several tips that will help your lawn thrive this summer.

About Us

Jonathan Green supplies genetically superior cool season grass seed, soil enhancers, fertilizer, and organic lawn and garden products to professional customers, such as sod growers and independent retailers, throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwestern, and now Western United States.

We are leaders in organics and have developed an environmentally sound approach to lawn care called the New American Lawn. This Plan combines our Black Beauty® grass seed mixtures with organic and traditional soil amendments, lawn fertilizers and control products that feed your lawn AND your soil so air, water and nutrients get absorbed by the grass plants.

Summer Lawn Care

How often have you fertilized your lawn since the beginning of the year? If only once, your lawn is hungry and needs to eat. During the growing season of March through November, it should be fed four times for optimum growth so it is able to resist insects, heat and drought conditions.

Jonathan Green’s Veri-Green Lawn Food offers outstanding performance and will consistently feed your lawn for up to 3 months. It is not affected by excessive rainfall and will yield a rich-green color within 7 to 10 days after application.

If the lawn is under stress from lack of rainfall, disease or heat, and if air temperatures are 85° or higher, do not apply this product, as turf injury may occur.

A gentler option during the hot, dry summer months is Jonathan Green’s Organic Lawn Food. This complex, fully organic lawn fertilizer will provide excellent nutrition to your lawn for 8 to 10 weeks. It can be used on established and newly seeded lawns or when sodding.

Our Organic Lawn Food also helps to rejuvenate thin, stressed lawns by adding complex, all-organic, high-quality, food-grade ingredients, such as feather meal, blood and bone meals, wheat shorts and molasses, to help improve soil structure and the soil’s water holding capacity. Your lawn will be better able to withstand environmental stress after each application.

Troubled by Insects or Grubs?

Jonathan Green’s Summer Survival Insect Control with Lawn Food has 40% slow-release nitrogen that provides a gentle feeding during summer months to keep your lawn nicely green. It also controls a wide range of insect pests, including chinch bugs, army worms, sod webworms, ticks, ants, fleas, and over 15 other insects.

If your lawn has a history of grub activity, the months of May through August are a good time to control them as they work their way to the soil surface to lay eggs. Apply Jonathan Green Grub and Insect Control which contains Imidacloprid and Lambda-cyhalothrin technology to control over 25 lawn pests, including grubs and surface feeding insects. Be sure to follow all label directions.

Is Your Lawn Thirsty?

Do not wait until your lawn shows signs of heat and drought stress to cure the problem. Lawns need about one inch of water weekly from rainfall or irrigation to thrive, and more during periods of drought. In severe hot, dry weather. water three to four times a week, but for longer durations. It is also best to irrigate in the early morning to avoid too much water evaporation. Don’t water your lawn at night; this can promote turf disease.
