Premium Grass Seed
A lawn is only as good as the grass seed you put down. But how do you find premium grass seed? The experts at Jonathan Green offer tips for what to look for when seeking a high-quality grass seed.
Jonathan Green has worked for more than 100 years to bring beautiful dark-green lawns to our clients using only the highest quality materials. How to Choose the Best Grass Seed
Avoid Fillers
Cheap grass seed is often not properly cleaned before being put into a bag for sale. Because of this, you will get dirt, seed hulls, and other debris, even weed seeds, in your bag. A high-quality grass seed will be filled with top quality seed and very little filler.
Diversity Matters
Grass seed needs diversity in order to create a lawn that is thick and hearty. The more diversity in the seed, the stronger and lusher the grass that grows from it. Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed, for example, contains species diversity and our most elite Black Beauty® Tall Fescue seed varieties, our best Kentucky bluegrass, and premium perennial ryegrass. This grass grows a lush dark-green lawn in full sun to partial shade. It germinates in 7 to 14 days.
Disease Resistant
Grass can be highly susceptible to diseases that can quickly wipe out an entire lawn. This is why it is important to find a grass seed that is genetically proven to be disease resistant. Our Black Beauty® grass seed is endophytic, making it naturally insect resistant and its superior varieties will improve even the poorest lawns. The plant leaves possess an invisible waxy coating, like the skin on an apple, that preserves plant moisture and shields the grass blades from disease.

Drought Resistant
Another grass killer is drought. A healthy growing lawn is your best defense against drought conditions. Seeding your lawn with drought tolerant grasses is important. Tall Fescues, such as Black Beauty®, tend to hold up very well since they have the ability to grow deep root systems. Seeding in early fall will allow your lawn to become well established and resilient to combat the following summer’s drought and heat conditions.
Thatch, which is dead organic matter, will also reduce the turf’s tolerance to cold, drought, and heat stress, increase its susceptibility to lawn diseases and fungus, and rob the soil of its ability to absorb water, oxygen, and nutrients efficiently. Dethatching should be done when your lawn is in its peak growing period. For cool season grasses, such as Black Beauty® turf grasses, this will be during the late summer or early fall. The lawn will recover more quickly when the grass is actively growing.
