Seeding a New Lawn

Planting (or seeding) a new lawn is not difficult and can be done successfully by anyone. If you are planting grass seed, follow these simple steps from the experts at Jonathan Green for the best results.

Who is Jonathan Green?

For six generations, Jonathan Green has been committed to producing superior lawn and garden products. We supply genetically superior grass seed, soil enhancers, and fertilizer to professional customers, such as sod growers and independent retailers, throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern United States. We are also leaders in organics and have developed an environmentally sound approach to lawn care called the New American Lawn Plan. The Plan combines our Black Beauty grass seed mixtures with a family of organic and traditional soil amendments, lawn fertilizers and control products that feed your lawn AND your soil.

Start with the Best Grass Seed

You need the best grass seed to seed your way to the lawn of your dreams. The original Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Original Grass Seed blend is grown by 0sod growers across the USA. It grows roots up to 4′ deep and produces a naturally darker-green turf with improved disease resistance and drought tolerance thanks to a waxy leaf coating that helps preserve moisture and wards off stress from heat, cold, wind and disease. This blend grows well in clay or sandy soils and in full sun or partial shade.

Plant Your New Lawn

When seeding a new lawn:

  • Remove dead grass, weeds and debris (sticks, stones, etc.) from the area.
  • Loosen the top half inch of soil. If your soil is very hard or compacted, Jonathan Green Love Your Soil® will loosen it. It also feeds the soil microbes, making the lawn soil more alive and porous, and enhances root and root mass development.
  • Test your soil to ensure the pH is between 6.2 and 7. If it’s not, Jonathan Green MAG-I-CAL® Soil Food will help balance the pH and, at the same time, help the lawn grow greener and healthier. Apply MAG-I-CAL when seeding, and adjust the rate down as the pH of the soil improves.
  • Level any areas where excess water might collect.
  • Spread the Black Beauty® seed evenly by hand in small areas. Use a lawn spreader in large areas. Avoid applying seeds too heavily or the seedlings will have to fight for space and nutrients, making the grass weak and thin in those areas.
  • Lightly incorporate the seed so no more than ¼ inch of soil covers the grass seed. You want the grass seed to be lightly covered by the dirt.
  • Fertilize before seeding with a starter fertilizer like Jonathan Green Veri-Green Starter Fertilizer for Seeding & Sodding and lightly rake in. This high phosphorus formula is specially formulated for seeding and sodding. It helps to build a vigorous root system and gets new grass plantings off to a fast start for a thicker, greener lawn.
  • Do not use crabgrass/weed killers before or after planting seed.
  • Lastly, keep the seed bed moist for a few weeks while the grass seed germinates and the new turf grass plants establish.

A Black Beauty® lawn will redefine your idea of what a lawn is supposed to look like.
