When to Plant Grass Seed in New Jersey

Seeding

Making the right grass seed choice and properly preparing your soil are just as important as deciding when to plant grass seed in New Jersey. Jonathan Green can help you grow a great lawn!

The Jonathan Green name has represented genetically superior grass seed, innovation, integrity, determination, and a commitment to excellence since 1881. We supply grass seed, soil enhancers, fertilizer, and organic lawn and garden products to homeowners and professional customers, such as sod growers and independent garden supply retailers, from coast to coast throughout the United States.

We have also developed an environmentally sound approach to lawn care called the New American Lawn Plan. The Plan combines our Black Beauty® grass seed mixtures with organic and traditional soil amendments, lawn fertilizers, and control products that feed your lawn AND your soil.

Use the Best Grass Seed You Can Find

The ideal grass seed should consist of several varietals, be drought-, disease- and insect-resistant, and establish deep roots. Finding all of these qualities in a grass seed can be difficult, but Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Original Grass Seed does it all!

Used by leading sod growers across the country, our genetically superior Black Beauty® Original Grass Seed creates a lawn full of grass that:

  • Has deep roots that can grow up to 4 feet deep for superior heat resistance;
  • Features an invisible waxy leaf coating that wards off disease and locks in moisture;
  • Is dark green, lush, and uniform;
  • Grows well in clay or sandy soils;
  • Grows well in both the sun and shade;
  • Is endophyte-bred for natural insect resistance.

Plant at the Right Time

Fall is the absolute best time to seed or re-seed your lawn in New Jersey. The hot, dry summer is over and the insects and weeds are less prevalent. Warmer soil temperatures and consistent rainfall at this time of year encourage faster seed germination and deeper roots that will help the grass plants get established before winter sets in. When spring arrives, they will develop even deeper roots, grow thicker, and develop food reserves to prepare them for surviving the summer stress.

Before You Start

Grass seeds thrive in soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.2 – 7.0), while weeds persist and are more difficult to eliminate in acidic soils that have a lower pH. Use a Soil pH Test Kit for Lawns to check the soil pH.  You can buy one at your local garden center or at www.jonathangreen.com.

Treat soil pH that is too low with Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Acidic & Hard Soil. Our innovative formula will quickly balance the pH and help the lawn grow greener and healthier. It can be applied the same day as the grass seed is spread.

When soil pH is too high, Jonathan Green’s Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Alkaline & Hard Soil contains sulfur and calcium sulfate dihydrate that will lower the pH, improve root penetration, and promote growth.

If your soil is hard or compacted, Love Your Soil® will loosen and aerate it. It will also feed the soil microbes, making the lawn soil more alive and porous, and enhancing root and root mass development. Love Your Soil® can be applied the same day as the grass seed and Mag-I-Cal.

When you plant genetically superior Jonathan Green grass seed in the fall in New Jersey, you can look forward to a thicker, denser and greener lawn that is easy to maintain and the envy of all your friends. Visit us online or find your nearest retail store.
