Product Overview
The biodegradable grass seed mat warms the soil below and allows light and water to penetrate so grass seed will sprout. The germination mat protects grass seed from being washed away from heavy rain and hungry animals and birds. Cut the Seed Roll with scissors to fit a bare area of any shape in your lawn. Grows best in sunny or shady areas, and germinates in 10 – 20 days.

When to Apply
For cool-season lawns, the best time to apply grass seed is in fall (between mid-August to mid-October), or in spring (between mid-March to mid-May). For grass seed to germinate, soil temperatures must be at least 55°F. Best root growth occurs between 55° and 70°. If soil temperatures are at or above 75°, seedling root establishment will not occur.

Use With Other Products
Black Beauty SeedRoll can be applied with any of our soil amendments. We do not recommend applying it with any weed controls, or fertilizers. You must wait at least 30 days to seed after applying weed control. For a full list of wait times, visit this FAQ page.
Watering Tips
- Once Black Beauty® Biodegradable Grass Seed Roll is installed water lightly with a sprinkler or hose until all sections of the fabric are wet.
- DO NOT apply a forceful jet of water to SeedRoll or it may damage the fabric.
- SeedRoll holds and locks in moisture, so watering frequently in small amounts is best while seedlings are growing. Ideally, water 2 or 3 times a day, until wet each time, keeping SeedRoll constantly wet for the first three weeks or until grass reaches 3 inches tall.
Mowing Tips
- Begin mowing your new lawn when the new grass has reached a height of 3 – 4 inches.
- Be careful not to scalp your lawn, as low mowing will stress the root system and encourage the growth of weeds. When mowing, only take off the top third of the grass blade.
Shelf Life
Each roll of SeedRoll has a unique seed label adhered to the roll which gives detail of the exact seed varietal and fertilizer. There is also an expiry date, this is a US agricultural requirement; in independent tests most seed is still viable two to three years after this expiration date.

How to Use
Prepare
Rake
Do not lay Black Beauty® Biodegradable Grass Seed Roll over any existing grass or vegetation, it must touch the soil for it to grow. Use a metal rake to remove debris, grass, and rocks and loosen the top 2 inches of soil to create a smooth surface. Fill in any holes and level the ground with additional topsoil if necessary. Make sure to till the topsoil into the existing soil. Black Beauty® Biodegradable Grass Seed Roll works best when touching actual soil rather than mulch.
Do not lay SeedRoll during periods of strong winds or approaching heavy rains.
Roll
Cut
Black Beauty® Biodegradable Grass Seed Roll comes as a roll and can be cut to size or shape by tearing or cutting with scissors. If you have a semi-round bare spot, tear or cut the roll to match the area to be repaired.
For Bare Spots
- Roll out the first section of SeedRoll over the prepared area. Cut this section away from the roll and lightly water the outside portion, keeping the inside edge relatively dry. Seed Roll will “stick” to the ground once moistened, so be sure it is in place before watering. Cover the edges of the roll with soil to keep it in place.
For Larger Areas
- Lay more than one section closely together without gaps, slightly overlapping the edges. Once this is done, finish watering your first section of Seed Roll. Remember; always try to keep the bottom edge of the new section dry. Continue until the desired area is covered.
Make sure not to leave a gap between the bio fabric and the surrounding lawn. Otherwise, there may be gaps in coverage between the new grass and your old lawn. Do not walk on Seed Roll once installed.
Maintain
Water
Once Black Beauty® Biodegradable Grass Seed Roll is installed water lightly with a hose with a spray nozzle attachment on a “Shower” type setting until all sections of the fabric are wet. DO NOT apply a forceful jet of water to SeedRoll or it may damage the fabric.
SeedRoll holds and locks in moisture, so watering frequently in small amounts is best while seedlings are growing. Ideally, water 2 or 3 times a day, until wet each time, keeping SeedRoll constantly wet for the first three weeks or until grass reaches 3 inches tall.
Mow
Begin mowing when the grass reaches 3 inches.
