What Is the Best Grass Seed?

Seeding
4 min read

A new lawn is only as good as the grass seed that you put down. But how do you know what is the best grass seed? There are a few things to look for when looking for a high-quality grass seed.

Jonathan Green is a company that has been specializing in high quality lawns since 1881. For six generations, Jonathan Green has been about innovation and research, creating new ways to feed, seed and care for lawns. We are committed to making sure our customers get the highest quality products for their lawns.

Avoid Fillers

Cheap grass seed is often not properly cleaned before being put into a bag for sale. Because of this you’ll get dirt, seed hulls and other debris, even weed seeds in your bag. A high-quality grass seed will be filled with top quality seed and very little filler.

Diversity Matters

Grass seed needs diversity in order to be thick and hearty. The more diversity in the seed, the stronger and lusher the grass that grows from it.  Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed for example contains species diversity and elite varieties of tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass. This grass grows dark green and very full.

Disease Resistant

Grass can be highly susceptible to disease which can wipe out an entire lawn quickly. That is why it is important to find a grass seed that is genetically proven to be disease resistant. The better the grass seed, the less work you have to do to prevent disease from wiping out your entire lawn. Jonathan Green’s Black Beauty® Original Grass Seed has a waxy coating that helps protect the grass from disease.

Drought Resistant

Another grass killer is drought. Lack of water in the soil is sure to leave a lawn dry and brown. Having a lawn that is specially formulated to persevere during a drought is important for the life and health of your lawn.

What We Recommend

At Jonathan Green, we have worked for over 100 years to develop the perfect grass seed and we are proud of our Black Beauty grass seed. This seed is diverse and hearty resulting in dark green grass. The roots grow up to four feet deep which is far deeper than other grass seeds. It is drought tolerant and good for both sunny and shady areas. Most important is the waxy coating that seals in moisture and protects against disease.

Preparing for Your New Lawn

Having the right grass seed is only part of the solution to a dead or patchy grass. Before putting down new seed, it is important to make sure the soil is ready for new seed to be put down. The first step is checking the pH level of the soil. If it is lower than 6.2 to 7 then you will need to treat the soil. We recommend Mag-I-Cal® for Lawns in Acidic Soil. It raises the pH rapidly and can even be applied right before laying down seed.

Once the pH level is ready for seed then it is recommended to put down Love Your Soil®. This product loosens and aerates the soil to make it easier for roots to grow.  It also activates the microbes in the soil to make the nutrients easier for roots to absorb. This results in grass that is stronger and healthier because it is getting the nutrients it needs. Once you have prepared the soil, use a spreader to lay down the seed and make sure to rake the seed into the top soil. The seed to soil contact is crucial for seed germination.
