If your lawn is brown or has dead or struggling grass areas, the solution may be the Black Beauty® Ultra biodegradable grass seed mat from Jonathan Green. With minimal effort, you can put it right where you need it, water it, and watch it grow.

Who is Jonathan Green?

For more than 100 years, Jonathan Green has brought beautiful dark-green lawns to clients using only the highest quality materials. Since 1881, we have experimented with turfgrass varietals to breed our genetically superior grass seed. We are dedicated to providing you with the absolute best products, so we rigorously test all of them to ensure they perform to the highest standards.

We supply grass seed, organics, weed, insect, and disease control products to homeowners and the independent retailer and professional lawn care markets from coast to coast. We rigorously test all products to ensure that they perform to the highest standards.

Try Our Grass Seed Roll

Black Beauty® Biodegradable Grass Seed Roll contains cool-season grass seed. We recommend installing it from Mid-March through mid-May or Mid-August through mid-October when temperatures in your area are consistently above 50°F.

The biodegradable seed mat contains premium Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed, starter lawn fertilizer, and mulch. It can be cut with scissors to fit any bare area in your lawn. It will warm the soil below and allow light and water to penetrate so the grass seed will sprout.

Once rolled out and watered, the grass mat will stick to the ground, and the seeds will begin to germinate. Each seed is surrounded by fertilizer and secured by biodegradable fabric that promotes consistent growth.

It can be used in sunny or shady areas and germinates in 10 to 20 days. The germination mat protects the seed from washing away in heavy rain or being eaten by hungry birds.

Once the grass seed mats get established, your lawn will be ready for regular traffic, including entertaining, play, and pets.

Things to Avoid

  • Do not lay the SeedRoll over existing grass or other vegetation. The SeedRoll must touch the soil to grow.
  • Do not install SeedRoll during periods of strong winds or approaching heavy rains.
  • Do not water the SeedRoll before placing the pieces where you want them. The SeedRoll will “stick” to the ground once moistened, so try to keep the bottom edge of each new section dry.
  • Do not walk on the SeedRoll immediately after installation.
  • Water frequently with a sprinkler or hose. Do not apply a forceful jet of water to the SeedRoll.
