Jonathan Green Black Beauty® Ultra Grass Seed mixture combines our most elite Black Beauty® tall fescue seed varieties with our best Kentucky bluegrass to fill in bare spots quickly and invigorate worn-out lawns. Black Beauty® Ultra also contains premium perennial ryegrass for fast germination and wear tolerance in lawns that experience heavy traffic. The Black Beauty® Ultra seed grows naturally dark-green turf and is most similar to the Black Beauty® seed mixtures that sod growers purchase from us to grow high-quality sod within one year. This seed germinates in 7 – 14 days.
For the best results, follow the directions below for establishing a new lawn or overseeding an existing one.
Prepare:
- Mow – Mow the lawn at the lowest mower setting before seeding to allow the seed to reach the soil.
- Rake – Rake over the existing grass with a metal rake to remove the thatch layer and any debris to loosen the soil. Add additional topsoil to fill in holes and level the ground.
- Check soil pH level – Have a soil test taken to check your soil’s pH level. Optimum soil pH should be between 6.2 to 7.0. For a pH below 6.2 use Jonathan Green Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Acidic & Hard Soil to rapidly increase pH. If the pH is above 7.0 use Mag-I-Cal® Plus for Lawns in Alkaline & Hard Soil to rapidly decrease the soil pH.
Seed:
- When to apply – The best time to apply seed is mid-August to mid-October while the ground is still warm and the nights are cooler. Mid-March through mid-May is the next best time to plant when the soil temperature reaches 55º+ Fahrenheit and the temperature of the air stays consistently warm.
- Spread seed – Apply half of the seed with a rotary spreader in one direction (north to south) and the remainder in the opposite direction (east to west). It is beneficial to spread a new seeding fertilizer that is high in phosphorus at this time as well.
- Rake seed – Rake lightly into the ground with a metal rake. Walk with light, even footsteps on the seedbed to firm the soil around the seed. Do not bury the seed more than ¼ of an inch deep.
Maintain:
- Water – For best germination, water daily to keep the seedbed moist. Continue watering regularly for a few weeks until the grass plants reach a height of 2 – 2.5 inches.
- Mow – Begin mowing when the new grass has reached a height of 3 – 4 inches. Make sure the mower has sharp blades. Be careful not to scalp the lawn, low mowing will stress the root system and encourage the growth of weeds.

Detached and aerated both front and back yards. The guy who aerated had a machine that dropped grass seed as he did it. It’s January here in PA and my lawn is a dark green like it has never been before. Impressed. I seeded a bare spot in late october/early november hoping it was not too late. Nope. Came in nice and full in that spot. Looking forward to the spring green time. I will try all JG products now. I use to be a Scotts man, 100%. Not anymore.
I used the ultra grass seed to do a heavy overseed of my existing lawn. I put is down at the end of September and by the end of October my grass was deep green, very thick, and lush. I am constantly receiving compliments from neighbors.
Big fan of this grass, green shoots came in quickly and filled out nicely as the grass continued to germinate. Applied in early Sept with no noticeable weed content. For best results get a proper soil sample before seeding so that you can select a proper fertilizer/lime/ etc to go along with it when seeding / overseeding.
Initial grass came in good after a week but so did all the crab grass. Must have gotten a bad mix. Pulled out all crab grass added fresh garden soil reseeded, more crab grass. Have had better luck with JG in the past, not this year, very disappointed won’t buy again.
JG Response: Crabgrass is not a contaminant in our grass seed production fields. When you disturb the soil (as you should) by raking to prepare a good seed bed for seeding, you bring crabgrass seeds to the surface where they will germinate, especially if you seeded in July. September is a better time to seed because crabgrass germination is less likely as soil temperatures begin to cool. For further assistance, email us at ask@jonathangreen.com.
I did a complete lawn renovation and seeded with Black Beauty Ultra. The results are outstanding! The ryegrass germinated in 7 days and the tall fescue germinated in 14 days. A year later I have the only green lawn on the block in this July heat. If someone ever has an issue growing this seed I can guarantee it’s an environmental issue (weather, heat, poor soil, etc) not a seed issue.
I threw down some Scott’s, and well it came in really patchy ? Not impressed.. so I saw by all the reviews that ultra was the seed to try. And wow ! Filled in with dark thick grass in a very short time. Will be buying more ultra this fall.. Great seed and great Dark grass.
Spent Almost $90.00 With hopes of filling in some bare spots with nice grass. I dethatched the lawn & raked followed all instructions. After 3 weeks none of the seed germinated, Tried again after a month, 2 weeks later & still nothing! I guess I will have to go back to Scotts or Pennington. With so many good reviews I really don\’t understand did I get a bad bag of seed? because I have gotten other brands to grow without issues.
JG response: Please email us from the link in the FAQ section so we can trouble shoot with you.
I bought a bag of Ultra for $80 with high expectations. Unfortunately nothing germinated. I followed instructions, watered, etc. I raked it after three weeks and found seed but no grass. I bought another bag of Ultra from my local hardware store thinking that what I bought online was somehow defective. The same results with half the bag. Nothing germinated. I’m very disappointed. Will return to Scott’s brand after spending $160 on Jonathan Green☹️.
JG response – Please email us through our FAQ page. We will help you out.
We couldnt get any grass to grow at our home. So I ordered this and look how nice it turned out. Lol, now everybody wants some.
Great product. Make sure to use plenty.
Used it to over seed my lawn, because of the warm weather this year it has started to sprout. Germination looks good can’t wait till spring
Good germination, nice dark green grass, does take a few weeks to get going. Grass seed was fresh, and as far as I can tell, it all germinated.
Used as a fall overseed, but my lawn was so bare from neglect – it was almost a do over. I spread at overseeding rates. Coverage was excellent regardless of being spread a bit thin. Lawn is like a carpet now – and I’ve gotten more than a few compliments. I’m looking forward to how it looks in the spring.
To be applied in the Spring
Quick delivery
Jonathon Green is my favorite brand for a great lawn. Had my landscaper put it diwn instead of his seed.
Great
Best seed on the market
Great product, I reseeded my Lawn and it was perfect.
Strongly recommended product.
Grass grows beautifully, Try it you would like it, just do it what do you have to lose if you need to grow grass.
the above statement is the results in my case. Great product
Nice start ! Late season planting, but this is Florida.
I can’t wait to see how it does in the spring.
I didn’t use it yet.
Scotts lawnservice came by and said we had the best year in the area. The grass does very well in cooler weather. It struggled in the summer time. I purchased a second bag for overseeding.
Best deal available. Seed was fresh. Analysis was done a few months ago.
Follow instructions and won’t be disappointed. So happy with this product. My lawn feels soft and fluffy compared to the bermuda grass that had overtaken my lawn. Killed it and started from scratch. 6 lbs for this small area. Paid off!
The bag I received had a great printed on bag date. The effect was noticeable in the yard with significant Fall grass growth. Thanks.
I won’t really know until spring. So far it seems good.
I live in Oregon, and I’ve been struggling to have the perfect lawn. I planted this seed during the fall. I am hoping that in the spring it will come up nicely, and I may add more at that time as well. They have a very nice video that sold me on the product, and I hope that the grass will do as well as in the video. Sheesh, we live in Oregon, the grass capital! You’d think that I could grow grass!!
Great results
Came as expected. Followed instructions on the bag. Grass came in thick and dark green!
Not sure why other stuff was grown into the lawn while planting these seeds. But they appear pretty strong and grow out in less than 7 days
The seed germinated in 14 days and its growing perfectly
This seed quickly grew a beautiful, thick lawn. True Green killed my entire front lawn. I fired them and took lawn maintenance over myself. This seed is the best I’ve ever used. I live in northern NJ.
I bought these seeds to patch some of the areas with thinning grass in my front lawn. The seeds are of great quality and easy to grow.
This is my second time buying this product and i was not disappointed. Germinated in exactly 7 days after aerating and seeding with starter feet, milorganite and light covering of peat moss to retain moisture. Nice dark green color, grows strong even on a slope with heavy fall rain and looks like a blanket. Even in the shade this grass will germinate and come in thick. During the summers here in N.C. (transition zone) the heat can be a monster with months of no rain and Avg temps in the mid 90’s so i did have some dieback and dormancy due to high heat, but the grass that survived bounced right back when the temps cooled down and fall finally arrived 3 weeks late lol. I suggest aeration, stater fert, milo, and peat moss as i have no weeds! The pics are after one month and i can already walk on it but I’d rather not until my first mow. And for best results, plant in the fall. I’m moving this summer but my next yard will be a JG yard!
FYI… my neighbor used Scott’s. My dominantion line is gonna be sick!
Too soon to rate the overall outcome, but as of today it looks as if 75-80% germinated and is doing well.
Hearty seed. Took off in 6 days.
My la n looks incredible such a big difference. Will use this for over seeding every year.
The product worked as described. As you can see from the pictures, the grass seeds grew. Although they were bare spots, I believe those were areas where I did not put enough seed. You can see in the 6-week picture how full the lawn is even with the bare spots. You will notice that the grass is bent over but that is because I used a leaf blower to blow the leaves out of the lawn.
People complained the seeds didn’t grow. Here are my tips: plant in the fall, put compost before seeding, use starter fertilizer, water twice a day for maybe 15 mins (this will vary depending on the sprinkler system you have) for first 3 weeks then once a day then every other day, mow after 4 weeks, add starter fertilizer again, switch to watering 1-1.5″ per week. I will be putting a winter fertilizer in the next week or two so it will be in good shape for next spring.
THIS SEED IS JUST THE BEST EVER. I WILL RECOMMEND THIS SEED TO EVERYONE. AFTER IT STARTED TO GROW I HAD RANDOM PASSER BYES STOP AND COMPLEMENT ME ON MY LAWN !!!!
Performed 100% as advertised. I followed seeding and fertilization instructions for overseeding, our lawn is now dark green, dense and with mower deck at 3 inches, it looks like plush carpet due to the wide, waxy blades of grass which are soft to the touch.
Got very good results with those seeds.
The best grass seed I ever planted!! Lush, dark green, and so thick!
I will know more next year.
Great seed
Used this to reseed bare spots on my lawn. Seed came up. Now I have a beautiful lawn once again.
I added this mixed in with the seeds I usually use and it grew in better and darker green color
Really good seed
This is my first time overseeding an established area or seeding from scratch.
Most of the 5200sf that I overseeded was growing well, but really bumpy and loaded with weeds and moss. Overseeded at bag rate (2.5lbs/1000sf): 29 days later, I’m absolutely thrilled, especially since I wasn’t able to lower the height of the cut prior to overseeding, so I was worried that there wouldn’t be much seed to soil contact. That area was dense, thick and much more even than it had been.
As for the areas that were bare: Much of it was so compacted from being “the path from the house to the driveway”, and raking to get some loose soil sounded like I was raking concrete. Again, 29 days later, with topsoil, I am thrilled with the results. It’s not as thick as the 40+ year lawn, obviously… but with more time and attention, I am confident that I can get it there.
Seedlings popped up within 2 weeks, which is great, now let’s see how the roots do next summer.
If you water it, she will grow. Thick luscious green grass sprouting up to the heavens in my back yard. So succulent my friends like to lay in it and gaze at the stars in the midnight dew. Black Beauty Ultra is the GOAT.
Overseeded, watered, it grew and transformed my yard.
Great grass seed. Put some straw down after spreading and keep it wet.
First time using Johnathon Greens Black Beauty Ultra and I’m very happy so far. Started germinating in 5 days and it’s now going on 4 weeks and my lawn looks very nice. It still has a ways to go from being a newly renovated lawn( only soil) and adding fertilizer today for low potassium and nitrogen.
I appreciated the quality of the seed but was hoping for it to be better rooting. i.e., We have soil, clay and sand mix
Picture shows the first mow after over-seeding and filling in some bare spots. Used magical plus, black Beauty ultra seed, and Jonathan green starter fertilized. Excellent germination rate. I dethatched lawn lawn really well with green works dethatcher, moved very short, applied products listed above in the same day. I did not rake the seed into soil. Watered three times a day for 6 minutes the first two weeks, then watered 25 minutes every other day for the last two weeks. Did this Sept 6th I’m Michigan when temps were still around 70 degrees during the day and dropping Down to 50-55 degrees at night.
This grass is beautiful. It came up in 8 days. Just have to make sure you keep it watered so that it germinates.
The seed came up in 7 days. The pics were taken on day 9. We had lots of rain, even too much. Nevertheless all starts to grow now. On pic shows a test seeding now 6 weeks old. I‘m looking forward to the future. Now Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra will grow in Germany where I am from.
Good quality seen
Germination is slower than the big store seed
But
I’m liking the results since overseeding on Labor Day.
Daily watering is important.
I found some areas lagging on germination but found fault to be the sprinkler system, adjusted that and grass popped.
Will repeat process again next fall to build hopefully a great lawn.
Awesome product got my grass from seeds in a week
In 13 years I’ve never had a “permanent” yard. Most years, I let crabgrass and other stuff rule my yard in the hot months. During cool months, I relied on annual ryegrass to keep my yard pretty.
This year I tried Jonathan Green products. Twice.
First time, things looked great, but died out after 4 weeks.
Second time, I applied grub killer to my yard. The results were amazing. I’ve never seen a better/greener/faster yard than with Johnathan Green Black Beauty Ultra. I’ve posted YouTube videos @David Deutscher.
Yes, it is expensive. But right now I’m doing a test between Black Beauty and Scotts Commercial. No comparison. Black Beauty will need mowing within two weeks.
Scotts continues to need water after two weeks.
I wish i could see the end result quicker
After two weeks I got 80 percent success I will buy it again
Here are 2 before and after pics. This seed germinated nicely and quickly. I am in Northern Virginia, and let the summer destroy my lawn as I did not follow a good watering routine. I dethatched, aerated and over-seeded on September 3rd 2019, The pics shows the new grass after the first mow on Sept 24th 2019, in 21 days my grass was thick and healthy. I highly recommend this grass seed.
**make sure you do the prep work before seeding, also you must water the seed/lawn at least twice a day for 15-30 minutes to keep the ground moist to get the best results..
Great coverage
Great job as usual thanks
Excellent product
Grass seed… what is to review? It was cast, it was watered, it grew. That’s all….
This seed is wonderful. It germinated in less than 10 days and is thick and full. Best seed that I have used in my 38 years of working my lawn! My neighbors all want to know what i used this year!
I don’t know what these people are doing that say the grass is slow to germinate. I used my aerator, put down Scott’s starter fertilizer and this seed. 7 days later I have small grass sprouting up. The photo is 5 weeks after seeding.
My bag was dated June 2019 its September 2019.
…that grass sprouted in shade in about 8 days. Very pretty green color too. I did use their Love Your Soil product when I seeded but do not know if this made a difference. Terrific product. Highly recommend.
I like the % germination rate,,,, most of the seed grew. Recommended
Put the seed down last Thursday on bare spots in the backyard, also used the Jonathan Green sodding and seeding fert and Love Your Soil, topdressed with some peat moss. Today is Monday and already seeing some growth with once to twice a day watering (it hasn’t been too warm). Hopefully it fills in properly.
I tried this product to repair bare patches in my backyard lawn. Germination takes about 1-2 weeks to get 2 inches tall. New grass looks uniform and great, much better than another mixed seed product with a cheaper price.
Finally time to plant new grass and I am amazed with this seed! I actually saw growth within 3 days now a week after planting and daily watering (Did not luck out with any rain) and I am not exaggerating, the grass is 5 to 6 inches high and no bare spots, amazing!!! my soil is not even that great and some is in full shade, some in partial and some in no shade with no visible difference in the growth results. I seeded bare dirt along with this starter food (maybe this had something to do with it?)
Great product. Got really good results. First time laying down seed ever and it was practically fool proof if you have some idea what you’re doing. Accidentally left sprinkler on for an hour and didn’t have all the proper tools but still got ^% of germination. Will definitely be buying this product again!
spread good and has already started to come up after 5 days
I used this to cover a whole section of my backyard where the dogs dug up, and along the new sidewalk we replaced. It says 10-14 days to germinate but this is my new grass after day 5. I’m very happy with it. It took me a whole day but I spread the entire bag by hand, as well as sprinkled dirt by hand to make sure it was a thin layer on top.
This is day 8! Grows incredibly fast and it’s a gorgeous dark green… cant wait to see what it looks like after 14 days!
Good grass seed. After only one week, it seems to be growing well. We are watering it twice a day and is looking good.
NONE
Fast growing
Hands down best turf I’ve ever had in my 23 Years Of home ownership
I like it so much I bought another bag!
This think really works….
Good seed
Works well and looks good. Use it for bare spots and over seeding.
Great product for lawns
Pricey—but worth it if you want a quality seed and excellent germination rate.
Very good product and produces a dark green lawn. Highly recommend this product
This product was everything the manufacturer claim it to be. The price was good, easy to apply and the grass grow fast. I will use this product again
Great coverage and a great lawn to go barefooted in.
This seed is coming up like gangbusters. Will order more. Great stuff.
Awesome Grass Seed
Grass took too long to grow
I’ve tried several other grass seed mixes from local places and from the usual folks (Scott’s, Pennington). Nothing has worked as well as this for my lawn.
I’m in Maryland, and have very sandy soil. Most grass seeds I’ve seen either fail to germinate, or die off within a month or two 90 degree+ weather (mostly because I am terrible about watering regularly). I overseeded what was essentially a crab grass lawn with this, and much to my surprise, it has flourished. It’s doing great in the full-sun parts of my yard as well as the densely shaded front yard with little work on my part. I definitely recommend it.
Top shelf grass seed as other reviews mentioned as well.
Seeded in fall. .great results
great results
I’ve tried many different grass seeds and I like this very much………In my opinion Lesco premium sun and shade works the best for me……
One of the best I have ever tried. It germinated in about six days.
The only grass seed available to non professional people who are going for a beautiful lawn. Germinates fast. I did have crabgrass invade but its too new to treat for a prevent. No bare spots
Perfect
Very nice
I hated my lawn last year in 2018. Towards the Fall season of 2018, I decided to give this seed a try! I thatched, aeriated, limed, and fertilized with Scotts. I applied a lot of this seed! I doubled their rate for over-seeding… Look at the difference between my neighbors on the right and my Johnathon Lawn… Thank you Mr Green . lol I’m hooked… Big difference, huh? It works…
This grass is the best I have ever seen. I am also allergic to grass but this stuff doesn’t bother me a bit when I cut it. Like all new growth it needs to be babied but once established you won’t be disappointed. I am in Oklahoma and this stayed green until January. About a month to a month and a half later it was green again. The pictures were taken in March 2019
Will buy again. Perfect seed mix for sun and shade. Grass has filled in nicely
Product met my expectation.
Just reserved a few month again and the transformation has been great, nice not having bare spots, can’t wait to see next spring
Turns very green except there’s quite a few Clover mixed in
Grow fast grows green and not patchy at all !!!
I was a little apprehensive about this product. I had tried other name brand in the past with no results. This bad boy really grew grass. And it’s thick and lush. I am obsessed. I only used in a few bald spots on our lawn to see how it would do. I plan to finish the lawn this summer. I also noticed a little goes a long way.
I decide to star all over with my yard i use to have an ugly grass in my yard so i decide to kill my lawn and star over .. i have heard alot good things abut Jonathan green black beauty ultra grass and I’m so glad i buy this grass after i plant the grass seed 5 days later star to germinate and 2 weeks later my grass is almost 3 inches tall i just can’t believe how awesome this product is. so happy about it
Liked the dark green color , just as dark as my kbg
Grass seed lives up to expectations.
Best grass seed ever
Easy to grow and yard looks great!
came up nice and green.
So I’m going to share my review with this product and all I need to say is I’m speechless. I planted on May 4 and now it’s the 19th I have the best lawn ever. This stuff is a whole different level of amazing. My neighbors have come over and asked me what I did and it it’s quiet simple. PUT EFFORT INTO WHAT YOU WANT. This grass seed is definitely worth every penny and then some . I live in northern Virginia and this stuff took off like wild fire. It took two weeks for it to be amazing back yard looks the same.
Grass seed came up beautifully, I will be reseeding in the fall with this seed. Great Quality Blend.
We had a tree removed and a large bare spot. The grass is growing where the bare spot is. Thank you.
Yes! This blend is beautiful and hardy. It holds moisture and grows fast. I have to mow once a week but the grass is very green.
Greenest grass on the block
Nice economy Size
Like franks hot sauce, you can put it on anything and it will grow
I’ve never been able to grow grass… until J Green. Worth its weight in gold!! Must water daily and planting in the early autumn worked for me, covered with straw during germination
We have never been able to grow anything but Bermuda grass. Our soil is very dry and clay. We tried this before going with a very expensive sod figured if didn’t work only out 100 dollars, if it did saved 1k. Well within 8 days we saw sprouts this is day 11 and still filling in but it looks as though we saved 1k. We live in zone 8b we watered three times a day for about ten minutes at a time it is also extremely windy we used the entire bag on approximately 2k Sqft.
This is a great quality grass with a deep green color. It seems to retreat significantly in the winter, and also seems like it’s slower to come alive in the Spring, but it’s a great quality grass. Very nice underfoot, and the kids tell me it feels nice in barefoot. Once alive in the summer, it fills in nicely. This is a lower-growing grass compared to others, but neighbors constantly tell me how nice it looks. I was using Pennington Sun and Shade, which I liked a lot, but this is better. Recommended.
UPDATE October 2019: Here in Virginia, we have a problem with Buttonweed, which left to its own devices, will grow in thick, heavy matts, crowding out even zoysia (and I didn’t think anything crowded out zoysia). I tried various weed killers with 2-4-D, but they only annoyed the buttonweed and didn’t kill it off. I finally decided I had enough of this menace, after trying unsuccessfully to hand-pull it (complete waste of time). So I picked up a weed killer called Celsius, which was known to kill off buttonweed for good. It was expensive, and the Celsius certainly worked – however…..
There was warning that Celsius will kill off “warm weather grasses”. I had no idea if Black Beauty was warm weather grass or otherwise, given it was a mix of different seed type. But it wasn’t long before I found out. After my Spring fertilizing, I told a neighbor that after 15 years, I had finally gotten my lawn where I wanted it. The BB seed created a beautiful, lush, thick green lawn – as good as high quality sod, perhaps even better. But then my new seed started to slowly die off. By mid-summer, my lawn had large patches of dead grass almost as if insects had attacked it. It was obvious Celsius was the culprit.
As a consolation, the Celsius definitely killed off the buttonweed. By the end of the summer, I saw only a handful of lonely buttonweed plants in a few spots in my lawn, and these were easily hand-pulled. However, I had to rebuild my lawn as a result. So I ordered more BB, and seeded right after our Summer 2019 7-week drought started in Virginia. The chips seemed to be stacked against me, but I watered regularly, and the seed came in nicely.
The fact that the lawn died back is not the fault of the BB seed, but of the treatment I applied. Given a choice, I would absolutely do it again. Anyone with buttonweed in their lawn knows what I’m talking about. You need to get rid of it completely, but you should do it one season first, THEN re-seed with this seed the following season.
The fact that I bought more BB seed demonstrates that I’m extremely happy with the quality of this seed, its appearance, and its desirability, and still highly recommend it. I wouldn’t consider putting anything else in my lawn at this point.
This is a very good grass seed , you can have a dark green lawn in two to three weeks.
Truly amazing seed look amazing!
This stuff! So i live on a wet/shaded lot that had some dirt work done and needed some grass…nothing worked and i put this out and 4 weeks later i have grass. Spars…just need to throw some more. It it worked and the color is amazing. I’m going to use this seed from now on!
I love that this is such gorgeous grass that it was begs you to take off your shoes and walk barefoot in it. I’ve never seen grass like this before in Florida. It is March’19. I hope it can tolerate summer here.
We just put this down about 4 weeks ago after having a new drain field put in. The grass is just beautiful. It begs being walked on in bare feet. Really. I had considered sod but though I’d try the seed. Sure am glad I did. It’s gorgeous.
WORKED WEAL
Not all of it seeds and germinates. Wasn’t bad price not disappointed
I planted this grass late October (NC). I new it was rather late but we have had a mild winter. It’s now February and my front yard is a beautiful green. It’s the best my yard has ever looked. Deer love it when it starts growing and can damage it if you don’t protect it especially early winter when there is nothing else for them to eat. I will buy it again and try it in the back.
There is no other grass seed worth talking about. You plant this seed & you get a Lawn not just grasss. I have been using Black Beauty now for the last 6 years and its the only grass seed that grows with very little care and looks like a million dollars
This just grows. I didn’t do anything really and it grew.
I had very good results with this grass. Good leaf, root system, and above average germination rate.
I love this grass. It is beautiful and grows well in dry areas like California. It has a fine blade very much like kentucky blue. Germinates very well and fast. Since my grass is in part in sun and shade, I found it quite consistent in either area,
This grass grew where none else would. I did not expect it to grow as I have not been able to get any other kind of grass to grow in this part of the yard but it is green and lush.
Had to reseed most of my front yard this fall. The grass came in thick and full, we’ll see how well our survives summer heat
It works great product
I overseeded with this product in early Fall and it germinated quickly and established quickly. I would recommend this product and will purchase again next year to overseed.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and even though technically the seed isn’t ideal for this area it still worked very well.
I have used this stuff for the past several years and have been happy with the results. Overseeding produces a nice thick sod-like lawn.
I received the grass seeds on October 27. On October 28 I planted them on half of my back yard just to try it out but with not much expectation. On November 3, six days later there were already tiny shoots. I was so shocked because everyone says that grass seeds takes forever to grow. On November 12, 15 days later there were even more grass growing steadily, and by November 20; 23 days later, which was yesterday, my yard was filled out nicely. There are still some bare spots to be filled in, but hey it is only 23 days and the grass are still young. I was so thrilled that I purchased more seeds to do the another portion of my yard, which I planted on Nov 15 and yesterday Nov 20 I saw some shoots already showing it’s head. To prepare the soil I used (Scotts turf builder starter food for New grass + Weed Preventer) , along with garden soil which I didn’t have much of , and even the part that did not get garden soil grew grass. I also used epsom salt in the soil before planting and then I covered the seeds with peat moss, and some areas potting mix when I ran out of peat moss. So happy, this saved me from buying grass Suds like I did for the front yard. Make sure to water the seeds often.
My husband raked the areas where the crab grass had turned brown and died off in early October and applied the seed with a spreader. I went away for 2.5 weeks and when I returned I was amazed at how green the yard was. We have acid soil in the NJ Pine Barrens and have a very hard time getting stuff to stay alive. This seed is really worth paying the extra money for. I will be getting a second bag for the rest of the yard.
All seeds germinated within a week
Best grass seed ever invented. germination says 10-14 days. i had seed pop up after 3. stuff is truly amazing.
I love this grass seed. I’m an intense greener throughout the spring summer and fall, and living in New England it’s always hard to get every patch of your lawn growing green and consistently healthy.
My neighbors told me about Jonathan Green grass a year ago. Having come full circle over a year of rough weather, I thought to write a review.
After failing to grow grass in a few stubborn areas with Scott’s sun and shade mix (and any other grass type you could imagine), I will never ever try another grass seed again. I have grass growing in patches that I couldn’t get growing for seven years, even while conditioning my soil and putting my know-how from decades of yard experience.
I encourage anybody who’s looking to grow grass in difficult areas or in variably intense weather zones such as New England to try this seed. Our summertime brings weeks of 85-90° days usually coupled with month+ droughts and water restrictions, and our wintertime brings dozens of below-zero days with sheets of ice frozen to grass coupled with dastardly wind chills.
I just love this grass seed.
Stands up pretty well to my dogs, definitely get defeated with all their running around but pretty respectable
Germindates quickly
Planted 6 weeks ago and have great success with germination. I seeded around Sept 5th and have had plenty of rain and now hope it will survive the maine winter. we had 2 frost mornings and grass growth has slowed to a crawl. I used a garden weasel to loosen dirt in area I was going to lay seed and it works well because it is narrow and gets in between patches of good grass and goes down a inch in the dirt to roughen it up. Also used a thin layer of peat moss in sunny areas as a mulch and had good success with this method just remember to water a little longer to get down to seed because peat absorbs the water first before it gets to the seed. I liked this seed and wish I used it the first time in hot sunny areas near the curb and driveway before I bought blue grass and layed that down. I think blue grass would do better in half sun locations like north and west protected areas of lawn that get 4 -5 hrs of shade. The test date of the seed was Jan 2018 and was a little worried of the age of the seed. Had close to 100% germ rate so had no issue with that. If it survives next spring this is my go to seed for now on .
I’ve purchased this 2 times already.
Great product for reseeding your lawn. Followed the directions and within 6 days it was sprouting. Has filled in my lawn very nicely and has a nice green color that blends in beautifully with my lawn.
If it looks this great going into fall… I can’t wait till spring of 2019.
Very pleased with this purchase and will surely purchase again in the future.
Envey of the neighborhood
grass grew quickly…and used it in October..looks good…
If you are not convinced this seed is worth the extra money take it from someone that planted seed side by side with another name brand seed. This seed easily popped up 2 to 1 over the other seed. I can’t wait to see the finished growth. I highly recommend this seed it’s worth every penny.
Against expert advice, I planted the seeds in Maine during an unusually hot two weeks in an area devoid of any grass. With daily watering, the grass seeds sprouted and grew as I had hoped. Now it is October and the grass blades are a thick, lush, beautiful shade of green and the prettiest part of my wreck of a lawn. I guess next spring I use this for the entire yard.
I was VERY nervous about spending the money on a product where ive seen reviews from my area say it didnt work. Literally in three days we seen sprouts and now its about 8 days later and WOW… I will never use another seed again. This product was worth every dollar. I am located in the Philadelphia, PA suburbs.
Best seed I’ve ever used. Well worth it!!
Growing strong! Keep well watered. Aerated and seed sliced. Patience… Some seeds sprouted fast, then some later. Went back and reseeded and tore up ground where growth was weak. I used a partial topsoil mix in some areas do to rain wash. Being a new home build they steal your soil and you have what is left which is clay and rocks. To avoid seed loss, aerate your yard and seed slice. Don’t let your seeds dry out or you are wasting money. I am always optimizing my lawn treatment and this really boosted my lawn. I used Scott’s fall feed and that really boosted the growth.
After an aerate over seed project, Black Beauty filled in my bare spots, and my lawn has never looked better. Started germinating after 5 days, and looks richer and fuller every day.
2 weeks post seeding and the grass is thick and lush. Currently about 3 inches high. I’ll be giving it its first cut in 7 days a 3 weeks post seeding. Watered 3 times a day and the grass came up strong despite temperatures 90+ for many days. Should be an absolute carpet come next spring.
Stop and get these. The box store brand carry junk seeds that won’t germinate and have fillers. Bought these for seed some bare spots and the grass is green and amazing. Will be getting more for overseeding. I am a true believer in these seed. Worth the money.
Highly recommend for northern lawns.
Incredible seed, comes up thick and deep green, saw results in 8days
I have tried all them but nobody compares to Jonathan Green! My lawn is the envy of my neighbors!
High-quality seed
This product works great and I need to purchase another bag for the areas of my lawn that are still brown. But, the grass is green and full in places where it used to be brown and dirt.
Overall the seed would work pretty well here in Colorado. I’ve used to Scotts brand of seed before and I wouldn’t say that is any better or any worse.
Yes it’s slower than mostly rye bag but if you water daily for 2 weeks and let nature handle the rest (no droughts) it looks great. It’s a deep dark rich green grass. It looks amazing. The only bad side is that if it’s a section you did most likely it sticks out and the other section of your current turf is a different color. I suspect the original grass is more of a Kentucky blend.
Nice grass seed!
great type of seed to grow hard to grow grass in certain areas of my yard. This is my 3rd bag of seeds and plan to buy more to just keep reinforcing healthy green grass growth in my yard.
Did not aerate lawn. Just raked and spread. Covered with a little straw and watered few times. Came up pretty good.
Great grass seed
It works
came uo fast and green
Great in northeast Ohio , planted on new layer of topsoil about 3 inches deep, sowed the seed as soon as I as I put the soil down, raked it in about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep covered with straw. I did three different areas 300 sq ft each, I had germination in less than a week and 2 inch high grass in two weeks. Keep it wet if Mother Nature does not. Best I have had for here by far.
I love it
Up in 8 days, filled in fast 4weeks and it blends right in to the lawn.
It grows and it grows and it grows!!!!!!!!!!
My neighbor is very admiring.
This grass is really hardy. We had a very large bare patch in a very shady area. The grass took even in an area with pine needles. I will definitely buy this grass seed again
I rarely give anything 5 stars due to the LOVE factor but I need to upload pics showing a barren area in my yard, added some topsoil and this seed and today a couple months later I swear you’d think this was a 10 year old established yard! I have never bought seed that worked so beautifully! I will try to get the before and after pics on here. I’ll only buy this for now on…
Very happy with the seed. Pictures are from MA and exactly 28 days apart.
Thank you, Jonathan! I live in the desert, daytime temps have been in the low 90’s F / ~32 C. Planted May 23.
Dude, this is the stuff. Couldn’t give it six stars, but I would have.
You know that root depth is the holy grail of grass growing, right? When the roots are deep you can water heavily (1.5 inch/week) but infrequently. That way the very top of the soil layer dries out (goodbye weeds) but the deep roots stay moist (hello dark green lawn).
It took a full two weeks to germinate, so make sure you have some protection if you get wind.
The color is EXCELLENT….came in a little bluer than I wanted, but greened up as it filled it. Makes Augusta National look like hardscrabble.
Get it, plant it, love it.
Grass germinated in 5 days in early spring. One month later and it looks awesome. Can’t wait till the fall.
Seeded a large area under several pine trees this spring, and it’s coming up beautifully. It’s mostly partial shade and has had to compete with several weeds from the forest nearby, but has been growing very well so far. I laid it down with a broadcast spreader and watered regularly, in a different section I used Pennington Deep Shade, and in a third area I used Scotts Shade mix.
This product is performing a bit better than the Pennington and much better than the Scott’s. I am very pleased with the result so far.
This seed will grow in the worst of conditions. A clay and weed infested yard in full sun all day to lush thick grass
Took a few weeks, but my little lawn looks great. Just gotta give it plenty of water in the evening and in the morning, and be diligent about it.
I have tried many grass seeds….but this is the best yet. Solid growth with thick blades. You have to properly prepare the soil and top dress with peat moss to have nice even germination which takes work but it’s worth it! I sprayed my original lawn and killed it and waited a month to make sure the chemical was fully gone. Skimmed the whole top layer of soil/dead grass off. Then hand tilled the soil and added a very think layer or new top soil. Spread the seed and then threw peat moss on top and within 5 days there was amazing growth.
Very happy with this product so far, I live in upstate NY and our dirt has a lot of clay in it and so far it’s growing well and holding up to being mowed and lots of rain.
spread well
Filling in nicely
Don’t usually write reviews, worked great!
Double seeded and looks very nice on front lawn.
Have been using this product for years- outstanding results every time- I bought this on amazon this time as a test to see if they would send me fresh seed or relabelled/ multi year old junk as I have had happen with other brands. This stuff had been packaged less than 4 months from when I bought it- it was fresh- and the price was ~20% better than the retail stores.
I will purchase again- Jonathan Green takes pride in there product and they don’t let old seed languish on the market
Best seeding I ever used
Somewhat patchy new growth despite cheese cloth overlay. Seeds manually spread over ~100 sq ft area from which weeds had been excavated and the dirt shaken off. I sprinkled about 3/4 of the 3# bag over that area and covered with cheese cloth. No fertilizer and watered only a few times – we’ve had a lot of gentle rain. I cannot figure out how to attach photos. Perhaps as this grass matures it will fill in the patches.
Great stuff, pricey but you get what you pay for and worth every penny. I do not have a green thumb by any means….used this to fix a few large patches – sprouted within a week and continues to grow strong. Highly recommend.
This really works. I have tried so many different seeds and none of them grew in my sandy soil. But this Black beauty is a game changer.
It comes up really quickly. It hasn’t had time to run yet, but so far I am impressed.
Nothing sprouted. I’m a gardener, so i did what was needed. But 0. Back to using Scott’s…
“Update”
So I realized today that little grass has sprouted where I seeded! I changed the 1 star to 4. Hasn’t sprouted everywhere I put it, but it has in many spots.
Superior seeds but you need to give them time to germinate.
It grows in my sh-ty clay soil.
Best seed I have ever used quick germination and growth
excellent product
I really really love this grass so far!!! In one to two weeks, you start to see the little fine hairs growing through the ground. The side of my home has been muddy when it rains and only grows poison ivy during the summer. I’ve struggled with this awful area for a long time. I slightly tilled the ground manually sprinkled seeds out with a cheap seed spreader and grass grew in no time. The whole area is completely shaded, no sun at all and the grass had no trouble growing. I’m just so happy!!! If I would have know this is all I needed to do a long time ago. I tried an area with a net to protect it from birds and an area without. Both have worked out fine! Seems and feels too easy but thank goodness I’m finally stress free!!!
Nothing but the best grass seed. Will buy only Jonathan Green.
Everything they say about it is true. You will definately see the difference from other brands.
So get planting.
2nd time I’ve purchased this! Works great!!
Full and lush in my Clay soil in MD.
Fantastic product and my lawn looked great after use. Very easy to use, specially if you have a broadcaster, if not buy one as it will really cut down your spreading time and broadcast evenly. Everyone should use this product. Recommended!
Grows in a few days.
I have now used this mix twice and it works well in the northwest. It is slow growing so takes a full growth cycle to fill in. The slow growth though means a lot less mowing than typical nw blends. I would recommend it.
These seeds germinate well and are excellent in shaded areas as well as sun.
I’ve used this product in the past and it works very well in either sunny areas or shady areas. I’ll be looking forward to spring time so I can get started with it.
I usually overseed in October – Early November. Seed picked up very quick. I had some big bare spots that i covered with this seed and it did a great job. Soil has to be at the right levels and water often.
Grass germinated well even with poor soil preparation. I’ll definitely buy more.
after 2 months I love it! We will see in the Spring
I recently thatched and replanted my entire yard with this seed. It started to germinate after about 5-7 days and after about 2 months my lawn looks great. I live in NJ so September is the best time for reseeding. We shall see how it survives the winter and recovers in the spring. But until then I have to give it 5 stars.
The grass grew as expected and it’s a pretty color of green. In the fall, we plant grass seed in a couple of decorative planters that we set near the front door (idea courtesy of Martha Stewart). The grass makes a nice fall display that holds up to cold temps. We typically use the leftover seed to patch some bald spots in the yard.
This stuff is awesome!
I made two small test plots in my yard and compared the Jonathan Green seed and another nationally known brand. The difference was astounding. I am performing a complete kill and re seed of my lawn in the fall of 2018. These seed are amazing.
Great product..
Happy with everything.
So Far, So Good. Grass is coming in nicely. We think we may have to do it again in the spring but we will see how the seedlings hold up through the winter
For a special spot of fall planting around zone 8. It’s coming in nicely, started germinating around day 4.
Super fast germination. Nice quality turf growing in very well.
Bag advertised 10-14 days to germinate seed. This picture is shown on DAY 8!!! People writing negative reviews are the ones with bad soil and don’t water properly, that’s why they can’t seem to make this grass seed work . Johnathan Green ultra grass seed worked great for me! Expectations exceeded!
Just started to lay down the seed so I’ll have to get back to you on this product
These grass deeds are excellent. I saw the first baby grass after 5 days.
I’m just going to let the photos do all the talking here.
Very happy with results ! Plantd under poor conditions and came up very nicely !
Just planted Johnathon Green Black Beauty Ultra seed September 4th. And two weeks later the grass is nearly grown in the whole yard. I spoke with Barry Green who is the chairman of the board of the company. He is a very nice person. He answered all of my questions, and was very helpful in telling what to do in preparing the yard for the seed. He even mailed me literature on how maintain the yard. I recommend going to there website and reading their articles. I found it very interesting that they have a full line of fertilizers. They spoke about making sure that the PH level in the ground is correct. And there crab grass fertilizer lets you reseed in the spring. Any other fertilizer would kill the seed. So when your lawn seeds in the spring or if you spread seed in the spring it will not kill it. Read the articles they make so much sense. I will be trying there fertilizer line this year. Ron G.
This grass seed for lawns works great 100% For me and these are the reasons why don’t expect to have a lawn with bad soil that is heavily compacted and never been fertilized or lime treated treated to just grow as you throw seeds on it minor top soil yes you may grow a patch or two here in there with success or no success perfectly true and still grow weeds galore along with it. But let me first start out with you must have good soil not dry rock hard compacted soil and weed beds that have never had weed killer sprayed on them or an organic treatment takes time plus average grass to start growing in certain months is 7 to 10 to 15 days just to see germination and 29 days for Kentucky blue grass it must be treated limed or gypsum and fertilized and then grass seed with a good 1/2 inch to 3/4 of and inch of top soil of choice . yes its true many have had great success with no treatments but in reality if its dry hard soil you cant even get a shovel into it then how can you expect its gonna grow seed that is suppose to grow down into your soil never gonna happen with out tilling it turning soil over or core aerating it and liming it and fertilizing it then wakes up soil that has weed seeds under it yes better believe there growing out with your grass too like i said it takes stages now i started in march we are now in September and have had the hottest California San Fernando Valley Summer Heat in a long time and this grass survived and is doing great ill show you some bad areas where no grass grew for months no grass at all and then with extra work and more seed and time it filled in nicely. Hope this helps
Works as described
Best grass seed ever
still in the bag but looks beautiful
Didn’t grow as fast the original one I bought. And not all seeds germinated as the original did left a lot of bear spots. Also not that dark green that I like from the other. I live in the Houston Texas heat and water it every other day so it has held up. Four stars because it does well in the shade.
I had sod installed on part of my lawn and used this for the other parts. The grass that grew from this seed is FAR better than the professionally installed sod. It’s much greener and thicker. It’s a very durable grass. I am very pleased.
7 days later grass is coming up.
1st grass seed I have been able to grow from seed.
Used it to seed an area of new lawn. Color is a nice deep green. The germination rate was not as great as I had hoped, otherwise it would be five stars.
I mix this seed with Scott’s blue grass seed, have DONE so for years, and have a lawn that rivals a golf course. I live on a heavily wooded lot and the seed does well in part sun/part shade.
I am a novice in seeding the lawn and I only started doing it last Fall using Kentucky Fescue and some Black Beauty. I am very pleased with the results. This spring I overseed using Black Beauty Ultra and it worked well also. I still see bare spots in some areas but it could be because I overseed by hand and missed some spots. Overall I highly recommend JG’s grass seeds. If I managed to grow grass on my lawn in Northern Virginia, anyone can do it!
The grass grew beautifully, and fast. Great product !
Great product.
Used this seed mixture to cover up some patches that hadn’t grown after reseeding the lawn. Germinated in about eight-days. Covered up the patches nicely.
did great at glacier national park area.
Don’t skimp on the prep work. Came up great where the topsoil was loose and kept damp.
I have used this for a couple years now at the recommendation of a golf course superintendent. He said, “It is pricey, but we swear by it when we need a patch/reseed in an important area of the course.”. He is right. If you prep correctly and follow the directions, this grass comes up looking GREAT! I think it may be the perfect blend for mid-Illinois.
I live in Northern Virginia and have a lawn with a lot of bare spots, initially it was the old 50+ year old neglected lawn and later after a major house renovation it was a regraded front yard and side yards that had had various things dumped on them and abused. I don’t need my lawn to look like a golf course but I don’t want bare spots and soil getting washed away by the rain. When I want to repair part of the lawn, I want to go out there and treat the soil, throw on the seed, water it, and then want it to grow in full and healthy. Seems simple, but I had a lot of trouble achieving this with other brands.
I tried numerous grass seeds including those from the bins in the local hardware store and Home Depot and other brands, rye fescue, bluegrass, blends, etc I tried this one on the advice of a landscaper who said it was great, and he was right. It is a mix of several different grass seeds but the thing that is very noticeable is that it sprouts pretty quickly (once in 5 days), grows in evenly and quickly, is resistant to weeds and other grasses, and after a few years it is still going strong.
The square footage estimates on the packaging are pretty optimistic, for example the 3 pound bag says it can cover 1,200 square feet. That is an area equal to a square 35 feet on a side which is equivalent to a small to medium sized front yard. In my experience when newly seeding an area the actual coverage is somewhere around half of that. The seed really works and so you don’t have to seed as densely but to think that you can seed 1,200 square feet with 3 pounds of grass seed is not correct.
This seed is relatively expensive but if you have a relatively small spot such as something 5-15 feet on a side and you want to be able to go out and fix it up in one attempt this is the way to go.
As a final note in my experience you can’t just go out and throw the seed on the hard ground and expect it to somehow magically burrow into the soil. As desperately as I would love to believe that all I have to do is rip open the bag and throw down some seed, in my experience with the hard clay soil in this area, when I do that, the seed just sits on top of the soil until it eventually dries out or is eaten by birds. The top of the soil has to be disrupted in some way, either by a tiller or shovel or other garden implement. This doesn’t actually take a whole lot of time or work but it is tedious so you think it’ll take forever. I will go out and literally hack into the soil in a back and forth pattern with a hand-held “ugly tool” or similar to break up the first 0.5-1.0 inches of soil, in preparation for seeding. And then after I seed I put down “tacky straw” to hold the seed in place and keep it moist until it germinates. This in my experience is the only way to get new seed to sprout on the tough clay soils.
Good grass. Its is growing in an area i couldn’t get any other to grow.
When it takes, it takes well. Slow to grow but comes in very green. 25lbs to overseed 10,000 sq feet is a little light if you have patches. Used 3 bags to repair a lawn that had been really getting patchy. One bag did not do as well as the other 2. I’ve just ordered a 4th bag to fill in the last of the patches. It’s not cheap, but it’s done better than plugs and other products so far.
Very dark green color, have a nice regular medium shape, need some time and work in order to see it cover all the ground with a couple of reseeding you can achieve the best result, my soil is not a good one is very muddy and this grass grows nice, i live in a tropical enviroment.
Same thing, started showing before the freeze, cannot wait for the spring.
DECEMBER 15, 2016: The first 3 pictures below show results a nonexpert can expect 26 days after planting Jonathan Greene Black Beauty Ultra Grass Seed, in chilly but mild weather in North Carolina. I started doing my own yardwork this year after professional landscapers overcharged for subpar lawn care. Although I cleaned up parts of the yard the landscapers missed, I gouged 4 holes in the ground with my weedeater in the process. For patching the holes, Jonathan Greene’s brand of grass seed was the smallest bag (comes in 1 pound) with the highest ratings I could find at Amazon or Lowe’s. The smallest bag (1 Cu. Ft.) of Miracle Gro garden soil was just enough to fill the craters.
I planted on November 19, 2016, while the temperature was in the 60s during the day and around the 40s at night. By December 15, we’re in the 40s and 50s during the day and usually in the 30s at night. Despite intentions to follow the meticulous instructions of other Amazon customers, I did not fertilize and only watered the seeds twice in the first few days. By the time the pictures were taken, we had 5 or 6 drenching rains and a few other days when it drizzled.
The growth is uneven because I didn’t distribute the seeds well, and because a flock of birds came out of nowhere and ate a lot of the grass seed the day after planting. But the sprouts that are present look healthy, and are finer and deeper green than the rest of my low-average quality lawn. This is better than expected for my yard, and others who do a much better job of tending to the seedlings will have even better results.
JANUARY 3, 2017: Last 3 pics are sample patches of grass at 45 days after planting. I didn’t water at all since the last post, but we had a reasonably good amount of rainfall once or twice a week despite continued chilly weather (50s and 40s during the day, 30s at night) The seedlings appear to be growing steadily and continue to fill in more of the bare patches.
I have pretty much a full yard of clay soil and this product germinated well. I only roughed up the first 2 inches of soil, with a pull behind leveler attached to my ATV, and then just spread the seed with a hand spreader in a longitudinal and horizontal pattern. I did not cover seed with any hay, straw or the like and it grew awesome. I just raked the seed into the soil with a landscaping rake. (I highly recommend tilling the ground to a depth of at least 4 inches to help with the germination of strong roots). It has been three months and the snow has fallen. Up to the point of snow fall I would say 90 percent of my yard has grass growth. It still has retained its color long after my neighbors blue grass has browned due to extremely cold temperatures. I have a third of an acre and live 30 miles north of SLC, Utah. Utah is the second driest state in the country so I wanted to have a ground cover that wouldn’t be to much of a drain on our water resources. I think I have found my water conservation goals with this product. It does have a nice dark green color, but is a few shades lighter in color than the rest of the blue grass lawns in the neighborhood. I know that it will be more drought resistant so my lawn will be green during the summer whereas my neighbors will be wilting in the desert sun and heat. I used two 50 pound bags for my 1/3 Acre plot, and then bought a 20 lb bag after germination for spot seeding.
Update 5/30/2017: Had to bump this up to 5 stars from the original three. The grass came in even with the late seeding and survived the winter and I now have a lush green lawn. This seed did extremely well and I couldn’t be happier.
The seed came up as expected. Got this in a little late for fall planting due to a problem that occurred with a product I had used to help with seed germination and growth. Seed came in but all the surrounding grass was killed due to that bad product and had to start over re-doing nearly half the backyard.
I didn’t want a backyard that would turn into nothing but mud come spring so I was forced to purchase seed at Amazon because the local shops no longer had seed available due to the lateness of the season. Luckily we have had a pleasantly nice and easy autumn this year so I am optimistic and expecting it to do well. Bought three of these 1 pound bags and got it in upon arrival. After nearly 5 weeks the grass is still showing a light green color instead of a dark green like the rest of the yard but that is typical of new grass. I have actually had to mow it three times now indicating it is doing well at this point. Hopefully the roots will go deep enough to survive the winter and if it survives I will definitely edit this review. We’ll see.
This is a good seed. I used it to plant my new lawn. But remember, the suggested coverage in sq feet is for PERFECT soil conditions and PERFECT weather….which is rare. So just use more seed than recommended to ensure growth. This is a fescue mix which is a COOL SEASON seed. So plant it when the day time weather is between 60 – 80 degrees and the night temps are between 55 – 60.degrees. I planted it when it was 90 degrees outside, and it still germinated. But anything over that and it will have poor results.
This product is fantastic. will purchase more in the spring. have been telling family/friends/neighbors about how impressed I am with this grass seed.
Fantastic grass
received product in good condition
These Jonathan Green 10323 Black Beauty Ultra Grass seeds are excellent, and fast growing seeds. I live in the pacific northwest, wehre we get a lot of rain and we have some shady spots in our yard with acidic soil. I had several spots on my lawn where I had trouble growing grass for the last five years. One spot was in a shaded area under ceder trees. I had tried may other seeds from a local big box hardware store, including JB seeds. Those grass seeds did not thrive in the difficult areas. This Janathan Green seed is on the expensive side, at almost $95 dollars for a bag. However, it was the only seed that I could get to grow in a shady and acidic soil environment. For that reason, I highly recommend this seed. Also, I could see the grass starting to grow within just 2-3 days. I am very happy with this grass seed. I did mix this seed with the Fescue seeds by Jnanthan Green, which are a little bit cheaper at $70 per bag. They both are great.
Great product! We’re in north GA and the soil is awful, but this came up a treat.
You get what you pay for……this seed is top-notch!!
We live in NC, often it is too wet or too dry for us to grow grass. this is the first year that we actually had success and I firmly believe it is due to Johnathan green. We have tried top dollar grass and this has been the only grass we could grow. I have to admit we don’t put forth allot of effort and this took, very impressed. It will be my go to for good. You can actually watch this grass grow.
Grass met more than my expectation beautiful color love this grass would recommend it to anybody
75% of the seed came up. I am satisfied because some of the other brands I used did not survive.
I had the worse lawn you can imagine before trying Jonathan green products. We bought a home where the previous owners neglected the lawn. We had a major moss problem in some areas so we decided to do a complete lawn Reno by killing moss and grass. We rented a sod cutter rolled up dead grass brought in some topsoil. It was hard work but it was definitely worth it. No regrets! We also used Magical and Love your Lawn Love your Soil along with the black beauty ultra
Great Product, even a dummy plumber can have a green lawn, very happy!
I had a patch where I barely scratched the surface with a hard rake…threw some of this seed around and sprayed it with the hose a few times….it took off like crazy, filled in the bare spot, and looks gorgeous. I plan on seeing a stone driveway with it next. Definitely worth the money !!
seems very slow coming up
I want a beautiful lawn but I don’t want to have to work for it. Each year, I will go out and throw down some grass seed on top of the weeds that proliferate in our yard and hope for the best. (It’s sink or swim here, mostly sink).
Last year, I tried this mixture for the first time. It was more than I had ever paid for grass seed, but I thought I’d give it a try and boy, am I glad I did. We have lawn! Actual lawn! And it’s beautiful! Lush, soft, thick and the most gorgeous green. Areas that were completely bare are now filled in.
I did water. Not religiously and not for more than a week or two, but I did water. I also laid down Magi-Cal. I am sure our yard suffered from high acidity, which is why the weeds were so happy, as we had never, ever limed and only fertilized once every other year or so, (we are seriously, seriously lazy lawn owners). It probably took all of half an hour to spread the seed and Magi-Cal. Babysitting the sprinklers until germination takes more time, but hey, you can cook dinner and watch tv while they do their thing. I did NOT water during the summer and it was DRY, ye the grass survived.
So, if you want lawn but do not want to be a slave to it, absolutely give this a try. For reference, we are in zone 7(b I think). Heavy clay soil, both full sun and dense shade. This seed has done well in both, though perhaps slightly better in sun. It did turn the dirt pit under the hammock, (dense shade), into a grassy carpet though. It even seems to be choking out the weeds. I bought more this spring to scatter in some areas that are still somewhat thin, (erosion issues), and got the patch mix for the last of the bare spots, (dogs who like to dig).
Our lawn went, in one year, from a scorge to the envy of the neighbors. Imagine what it would look like, had we actually bothered to care for it properly!
There is good and bad reviews on here, mine is a good review. I bought this seed and over seeded my lawn after using a tow behind core aerator, I did nothing else except water my lawn daily and add the cal-mag. I had neighbors coming over and telling me that my lawn has never looked so good and looks so much better then theirs (people around me have sod or professionally maintained lawns) For the little time I spent on it it transformed my house in having some of the worst lawns around to making my yard look like one of the best. Curb appeal is huge and this did it for me. I will over seed every spring and fall with this product. I tried many different brands such as Scotts and Pennington and Jonathan Green blew them all away with ease! Also just so you know the Ultra comes with Rye grass in it so it will sprout fast but only last a year, makes lawn look good for short period of time while the “good” grass grows in. If you do not want this then get the regular Black Beauty not the Ultra.
awesome grass seed
This stuff really grows nice looking, deep green grass. I would not patch small areas with it if you have a lot of thin and lighter colored fescue, but it’s great for over-seeding and appears to really build a strong and healthy root system. I believe this is one of the better products on the market even though you have to pay a bit of a premium price per sq foot.
See my review with picture on the 7 lbs bag…
expensive seed that is worth every penny….however is not a miracle seed….you need to prepare the soil for the seed…put fertilizer and make sure soil has the correct ph….great results….
Grass seed came up within a week after covering with a small amount of topsoil.
Hands down the best lawn products on the market!
Will review after planting.
Great grass seed
great product. looks great and easy to use
Look nice worked fast, time will tell
Works Great!!!!
This was the best grass seed I have ever had. Germinated in just a week! Super Happy!
So far the seed is growing OK.
This grass seed germinates well, grows in very thick, and in doing so helps to keep weeds in check.
I recently replaced my sewer main and was directed to this product by a friend of mine. This is without a doubt the best grass seed I have EVER purchased. I bought the three lb bag which wasn’t enough to cover the entire area that needed to be reseeded. So I picked up a bag of scotts my normal goto brand at home depot to finish the job. The areas where I planted the scotts is weeks behind the Jonathan Green all areas have been tended too the same and where sown at the same time. It’s a head and shoulders difference. I can for the life me see how anyone has a negative thing to say about this seed. I’ve been tending lawns for over 20 years and worked for a lawn service going through college. Hands down the best lawn seed I have ever used.
Does what it advertises.
Most seemed to come up, looks delicate though, time will tell.
I planted this grass seed in my back yard in Northern Va in early spring. It’s growing in nicely. I used migical and love your lawn love your soil when I seeded. I’ll be updating..
After about a week, the grass is growing.
Great product for those of us who will spend more for a quality grass seed to have a green lawn without having to use toxic fertilizers and weed killer.
I overseeded an area of my lawn that wouldn’t grow any other grass. Now that area looks better than most of the rest of my yard. Great grass seed!
deep green color
Amazing results in two weeks
Had a area that I rototilled and used three different types of grass seed. The Jonathan green was the first one to come up and has studiedly showed signs substantial growth. Now rather it last thru the summer is another issue?
Makes a nice green lawn. Great seed!!
Satisfied with the product…
In my considerable experience with trying different grass seeds over the years for both newly seeding an area as well as over-seeding the existing lawn I have found no better grass seed than this Black Beauty grass seed. It’s percentage of successful seed germination is second to none, the grass seed grows into a lush deep green carpet of the most beautiful grass you’ve ever seen. I couldn’t be happier with this grass seed both in its end results as well as in comparison to other top line grass seeds from other manufacturers. No grass seed I’ve tried in the past has had results even close to this grass seed. While this seed isn’t cheap when you see the end results it is very cost effective compared to other brands that end up leaving you with bare spots where seed didn’t take. Like any grass seed it’s important to properly prep the area regardless if you are newly seeding a lawn or over-seeding your existing lawn, the rate at which you get seed germination is dependent on how well you prepare the area, not to mention keeping it evenly moist until the grass takes and you’ve mowed it twice, after that you can cut back on the frequency of watering but make sure you water deeply and before you know it, you’ll be on your way to having the nicest lawn on the block. When preparing the area for grass seed it’s important to loosen the soil so that the seed has something to bond to. It’s also important to use a seed starter fertilizer. I find fall to be the best time to plant grass seed here in the northeast, the soil is still warm but the daytime temperatures are cool making for a perfect balance to get your grass off to a good start. You can also seed in the spring but make sure you get it started long before the dog days of summer begin. I give this grass seed my highest recommendation, I wouldn’t dream of using another grass seed in my yard and neither will you after you give it a try.
STILL waiting for spring to see the dormant seeds come out, but so far, so good. Had many sprouts in bare spots that never grew grass well around shady areas before winter stuck. If I have good grass pop up in spring time then it will be two thumbs up on J G.
cheers tommy x
It’s horribly expensive, but it’s nice seed. The results show. Thank goodness I had a small area to patch.
Awesome grass seed. Its winter and is greenest yard in sub division. Awesome awesome
Thanks
My garden has sandy soil and here in CA has very dry weather.
This product works well under such conditions as described.
It took 3 weeks to see it’s growing well and we could see very thick grasses after 4 weeks.
Love my rich dark green lawn which I thought it’s almost impossible before buying this product. Thanks!!!
This is great grass seed. I had been killing weeds in my lawn and the grass was looking a little raggedy. I just scattered this seed on the top of the ground before a couple of days of rain. Later in the month, I noticed a huge difference in my lawn. Really lush and green.
Excellent seed mix–saves water
Lawn looks great. The new grass seed came up quickly and the lawn has never looked so good.
Great grass seed! Perfect example of “you get what you pay for.” This is the second year I have overseeded with this seed. Only 4 weeks after overseeding, our lawn is an amazing dark green color. Bare patches that were the result of a very dry summer are filled in. I have tried many other brands and generic store label seed. None of them come close to this seed. I can only assume that the few negative reviews of this product are from people that don’t know how to properly apply it and keep it watered. Aerating before over seeding is key. Probably not worth the cost of this seed if you don’t aerate first. In New England, plan on overseeding in early to mid Sept so that seed has plenty of time to germinate before first frost.
This stuff grows like crazy. However, the color is a lighter shade of green than my surrounding grass. The blades of grass are also noticeably thinner than the existing grass. I suspect both will be less noticeable next season. I’m just happy to have grass – I’ve never been able to make it grow before.
I used to ask the landscaping folks to do the core aeration and overseeding for past 2 years. But there was no improvement to the lawn so far. So I decided to do the overseeding with Jonathan Green this year. I applied the seed on mid of September (Sep 15) and the lawn looks great now. I hope the grass will be established to deal with the winter. I followed the directions suggested in the Jonathan Green website.
1. Dethatched the lawn first.
2. Hired the landscaper to do the core aeration.
3. Applied Jonathan Green love-your-lawn soil, winter survival fertilizer, mag-i-cal and the grass seed on the same day.
Works really well, does like be in dirt that is more than most but not saturated for the first 6 days or so.
no comparison there is no other seed on the market that can hold a candle to this product
Worked where no other grass seed would. Doing great
The bare spots I filled in spring came in greener than surrounding grass. I am planning on overseeding this fall.
love all there products
Great seeds
I have bought more pounds of grass then I can count. I have bought premium, budget, patch, sun , shade and every type I have not mentioned. I had a large area to plant this year and I didn’t want budget. Perusing the Internet I saw this brand, it was new to me. I bought the big bag. The grass broke ground in less then a week. What must be done to new planted seed is to provide constant moisture and make sure the seed is not sitting on top the dirt or buried too deep. I watered the area two to four times a day prior to germination. After germination I kept up that practice. You can plant and grow grass anytime spring, summer of fall. If planting in summer just water it. I have seeded in early December in a snow storm and that grass did great the following spring. I know what I am doing. It’s been a month since the grass came up and it is the deepest green I have seen in grass. No weeds came up either. If this product didn’t work for you it’s not the seeds fault. Great stuff. Buy it you won’t be sorry
Purchased 25lb bag last August 2013 with the intention of seeding a rather difficult area of approximately 6,000sq.ft. This area had been a staging platform for logging trucks, we had a clear cut done about six years ago, we had unsuccessfully tried planting numerous other grass seeds, all to no avail.
Roto tilled , lime, fertilizer ,” Black Beauty Ultra Seed” then a covering of organic compost that we had delivered in bulk, about 6cu.yrds. This all was done the first week of September 2013, last year we had an over abundance of rain up until the first week of September, not a drop for three weeks, area is about a third of a mile from our house, so watering was out of the question. Finally the last few days of September we received rain, and then it rained on and off for about four weeks, nothing big but about one half to three quarters of an inch each week. By the end of October we had sufficient growth to do our first mowing, stayed green all winter, and this past winter was unusually cold and wet, spring brought a beautiful thick super green lawn. Will have to do some over seeding this fall, deer, turkey etc., seem to like this grass and need to fill in those gaps.
Conclusion best grass seed I have ever used, and that’s over forty years of seeding.
We had grubs the previous season, and a new dog that was a mad man tore the backyard up last fall. A lot of bad patches of bare dirt, and some holes to fill from him digging. I was lazy and decided to just throw the seed out on the bare ground and let nature do its thing. The dog was banned from the back yard for the first two weeks, and I did water it the first week, but that was all the attention it got. My wife kept saying there was nothing and that I had wasted my time. Hah. About two weeks later they started sprouting, and a good portion of them germinated. There is at least some grass in the bare patches and Grub-ex has helped eliminate the initial problem, so I’m glad I did it. I’ll spread some more to help fill in, and have no doubt that it will work as expected. The areas were both full sun and mostly shade, and did equally well in both.
Live in Zone 8+/-. Spread during a warm snap in February, then turned cold again. But when Spring finally set in and got some rain, this seed came in really strong and really lush. I have great hopes for it during our hot summer…its in shaded area (about 30′ x 50′) of backyard and is really lush and dark green…like a fine carpet. I wish I had done this to the front yard ’cause the Bermuda out there is in too much shade and yard looks puny by comparison to the Black Beauty.
I am very impressed with this product! I scorched my lawn with weed and feed weeks ago and once I pulled all the dead grass out I threw down some topsoil along with this seed and it has taken off. Within a weeks’ time new grass is sprouting everywhere and I didn’t even put groundcover down. We had three good thunderstorms and I was sure some of the seed would have washed away but it seemed to have taken root very quickly. In any case I have over seeded it twice since original planting and it’s thriving in the sunny areas and the shaded areas and even on the hill – this is a wonderful seed product and I recommend it highly!!
I bought this to fill in some bare patches in my yard that I’ve been unable to get grass to grow. I’ve tried sod and other types of seed and nothing grew until black beauty. Grass started coming up within days in a mostly shady spot. I recently planted some more in a sunny, dry, hot spot with poor soil and it’s coming in beautifully! It’s too soon to know if it will last through the long, hot Houston summer, but so far I’m impressed!
I planted this grass seed in the fall and by the spring I had a nice green healthy lawn. I used starter fertilizer when I planted it. Good product. Does good in full sun.
This was purchase because we needed seeds for the grass this year 2014. Well it was not only a great purchase but man does my grass look great. The areas where we were not getting much growth are not coming in full.
i love this grass.. it is so soft not itchy… grows with almost no sun or a ton of sun… no other grass should be used.
Long roots, insect resistant, dark green. Far superior to most grasses, and holds up in summer heat that withers other grasses
Have tried many different types of grass seed over the years but I don’t believe I have ever seen any germinate and last like this label!
I use Jonathan Green steps 1-3 on my lawn beginning in March and then in the fall I aerate and overseed with Black Beauty Ultra. I have been doing this for the past 3 years and we have one of the most full, plush lawns I have seen. Jonathan Green products are a little more expensive, but are well worth the extra money in my opinion. Also, I order all of my Jonathan Green fertilizer and seed in the winter months and they seem to be a lot cheaper than if you wait until spring and summer when the demand is high.
In an area where it’s very hard to get grass to grow without spending a fortune on water, this grass just grew beautifully. My yard is a gorgeous, deep green – and is in stark contrast to the burned out, pale-looking Bermuda grass on the rest of my street. Highly recommend.
The backyard was full of solid dirt!
Steps that worked for me:
1. Break up dirt with any tool I could find that will break up dirt…
2. Spread seed out evenly
3. Rake over the ground softly to brush in the seed (birds will eat it up!)… covering it with extra dirt is ideal.
4. WATER!!! needs lots of water… don’t let it get dry, if they look dry water it some more! I kept it well watered and my seeds started growing germinating in 5 days!
I purposely tested some areas with heavier water than others, and even though they received the same sunlight and were right next to each other the difference was clear. Give them a good soaking.
Used this in conjunction with the Jonathan Green Fertilizer. Did grass grow? Yes it did. It grow fast and thick. Overall, some great seed. Better than others I have used. Spreads easily and starts to grow within days. You don’t need a green thumb for this one. Covers quite a larger area. Buy this, you will be happy.
Grass is freakin awesome. Growing thick and green. you will love this grass seed if you want a nice lawn with half the cost
I do a lot of lawn care and this seed looks great. I love the blend because it greens up fast with the ryegrass, then a week later the fescue comes in, and then two weeks later the bluegrass comes in. Then, the bluegrass will spread to fill in any bare spots. Once it established itself after about 2 weeks it looked good and had some gaps. Then two weeks later when the bluegrass came in, it looked great. I planted it in early September, and it’s now November. Looks dark green and thick. Remember, it will not grow well unless its in the spring or fall and you need to water enough to let the roots establish before summer or the winter. If anyone had a problem with this grass growing, then they must have done something wrong when planting or caring for it. That goes for any grass seed.
So far so good I seeded my yard this fall and watered the seed daily to keep it moist and used line and starter fertilizer. I have received many compliments so far and the lawn is only 2 months old. I used this last bag to reseed over several thin areas in the new lawn.
Far better than the grass seed you can obtain through your local garden center. After many years of using other seed with mixed results, I’m glad I found this brand. Even in shady areas that have been problematic I now have quality grass. One thing to mention, don’t spend your money on this if you don’t plan to regularly fertilize and, where necessary, water. TurfTrust and Ringer are both excellent.
I can find this at some of the ‘higher-end’ garden centers but not at this price!
I have 2 dogs who ruin the grass with pet urine. After fixing the pH of the affected spots, we seeded with a Scotts seed which did nothing, then seeded again a month later with this Black Beauty Ultra seed mix. Within a few days there were sprouts, and after 3 weeks the 14″ diameter dead patches are almost entirely filled in.
I covered the seeds lightly in a layer of wood-chip-compost to keep the birds away and watered daily. It’s outperformed the Scott’s seed mix by a mile!
The grass looks good and grows where no other grass would. I will order some more next year for spring
I airated put down Black Beauty and fertilizer two rain showers and seven days later grass sprouted everywhere. Would recomend to anyone. A++++
I used this on a hill that is fenced in with little sunlight to hopefully get some grass to grow for both preventing erosion and an area for my dog to go, there was currently no grass there. After one week I was amazed to look out and see a ‘lot’ of green already. I seriously didn’t anticipate seeing any growth until spring.
I bought this online. I had about 2,800 – 3,000 sq. feet to seed. I saw this online and it said a 7 pound bag would see 2800 sq. feet. So, I bought an extra 3 pound bag to make sure I had enough. Well.. the 2,800 sq. feet that’s in the description is for RESEEDING grass only. NOT for new lawn seeding. If you look on the back of the bag, it says it covers 2,800 for reseeding lawns and 1,400 sq. feet for new lawns. The 3 pound was also only half the square footage is well. So I had exactly HALF of what I needed. I also bought the MAG-I-CAL.. which ALSO doesn’t cover as much as posted in the description.
However.. having said all that. Now that the seed has been planted… it’s coming up great.
I live in Laredo and decided to plant a lawn in my front yard in the heat of summer (100-110 degrees depending on the day). We have sandy desert soil here. I used Scott’s Turf Builder Seeding Soil as a topsoil for the seed. I have watered a few times each day as needed to counter the scorching weather. Within 10 days to 2 weeks blades were popping up everywhere and now at 4 weeks I have a, lush, deep green lawn that is getting thicker every day. My wife was skeptical from the start and didn’t believe I could get a lawn to grow here in this summer weather. Needless to say she is impressed. Great product. Hearty and beautiful grass. I highly recommend Black Beauty Ultra and am going to order more and expand my lawn area!
I use it by mixing these with Scotts ez-seed and the results are pretty good. Had a bad bad lawn and used this mixture and scotts max greet.. within 3 weeks its as good as new.
does not grow as good as it describe. I leave in a sandy area. replacing portion of dirt also does not help.
I live in Northern VA where the summers are HOT on sunny lawns like mine and this seed gives the most consistent result of any I’ve used.
have patients i watered my lawn for 30 min every day for 3 weeks and nothing by the 4th week i had a green lawn very even in color no patches with no grass its a very deep green soft to walk on i bought 2 7lbs bag to do an area 35/40 and it does cover very well .so if your looking for a good grass seed buy this one ive tried others and have never had good results
Here is what I did:
1. Grab a shovel and hand weed broadleaf weeds (if you use must chemical weed killer, do it 4-6 weeks before overseeding).
2. Aerate your lawn with two passes. Seed doesn’t grow in compacted soil.
3. Dethatch your lawn. Seed can’t grow in thatch, it needs to have contact with the soil, and plenty of access to sun and water.
4. Just before overseeding, mow low and bag it. Leaving clumps of grass clippings will smother seedlings.
5. If possible, use an dethatcher/overseeder, not a broadcaster.
6. Apply the seed at a very generous rate (follow the application rate recommended by the overseeder machine for Tall Fescue).
7. Hand apply seed in bare spots.
8. Rake 1/4 inch of composted manure over your lawn (or at the very least, in the bare spots). This will help maintain moisture and keep the birds from eating it.
9. Water each morning for about 20 minutes for the first month.
10. Water in the evening if it was a hot day (over 85 degrees).
11. Wait 8 days to mow the first time after seeding. Mow at a high setting. After the first mow, mow every 4 days at a high setting. Tall grass helps develop a healthy root system and crowd out broadleaf weeds.
Here is what I did NOT do:
1. Use any chemicals to kill weeds 4 weeks before seeding and 6 weeks after seeds emerge (which is about 8-9 weeks after overseeding). This will kill your grass.
2. Skimp on the seed trying to save money.. you end up wasting all of your money.
3. Use any synthetic chemical fertilizers 4 weeks before or 6 weeks after overseeding, this will just burnout new seedlings.
4. Wait too late to seed for your zone when temperatures are too high for seedlings.
5. Ignore broadleaf weeds like dandelion and thistle. If those stay in the ground, it crowds out seedlings in those areas.
6. Mow with dull blades at a low setting. If you do, it will rip out the seedlings by the root.
7. Apply any sort of preemergent weed preventer .. like crabgrass control before, during, or after seeding. If you do, you are guaranteeing frustration and failure.
This is an expensive project, to help cut down on costs, rent an aerator and dethatcher/overseeder with two other neighbors and it brings the costs way down and helps the whole neighborhood look beautiful.
I have bought other grass seeds such as Scott’s and sta green etc… But this has been the best so far along with ringer fertilizer my lawn is thick and green.
i recommend getting the fertilizer… it really maxes out the potential of this product. but without it it still works well
Finally the grass seeds that would grow fast and furious. I have noticed the first grass coming out only after 24 hours, 5 days later entire area shows green young grass. I will add more after few weeks after I see how it looks when matures. So far so good. I put some Scott’s coated grass, and nothing grew out of that…I would recommend Jonathan Green to anybody.
It only took less than 2 weeks to sprout and they are growing fast and healthy where other grass just couldn’t survive. love it!
Considering our soil is caliche for the most part, the grass is doing well. Good germination rate. Germinated in two weeks. It’s been a month and is looking lush.
I used in my backyard which had patchy grass and sandy soil. After raking the soil and spreading the seeds, It worked as promised.
Do your soil prep and crunch the numbers for your working lawn area, keep it moist and you’ll be satisfied with the EXTREMELY NICE emerald-green results. Worth the price. I planted a small in-between space this past fall and it looks terrific. I can’t wait to plant a larger lawn area this spring. 100% satisfied.

Reading between the lines, the message is: this lawn seed is so far superior to anything else I’ve ever planted (and I’ve grown a few lawns) that you’ll CRUSH your neighbors. Your lawn will be gorgeous. Rich, healthy emerald-green. There are plenty of also-ran lawn seed out there. This stuff is in a class by itself. Worth every penny.

Alas!!! My patch of lawn was gorgeous here in San Diego until August, and then the heat set in and the lawn was incinerated!!!! So this must be better grown in a cooler area!! It sure looked great while it lasted!
The only grass that returned after a summer of caring for two pugs. Did not need to reseed rear lawn.
I planted these seeds the beginning of October a day before we were to get a big rain. I panicked…thought all the seeds would wash away….ran to Big Lots and got large pieces of plastic to cover. Well…I saved most of it and to my surprise the seeds actually started to germinate faster due to the plastic keeping the moisture in…a new finding for me. My lawn is the envy of the block. It is a lusious deep green lawn just as the packaging says…just hope it makes it through the winter. Others have asked me what did I use and wanted the name and everyone has commented on how good it looks and think I have a “GREEN THUMB”.:)
What a perfect mix of grass seed. Comes up very fast and has the deep green color. Superior to any brand of grass seed found in stores.
These seeds are going to make your lawn the evny of the neighborhood. Keep in mind that this is a cool season grass mixture of KBG and rye. You get an early bloomer with amazing winter green. Plant no later that September / October in zone 7 and north.
I bought the product even though there were several derogatory reviews. I planted the seed with a hand operated spreader and watered it. Planted it in the 3rd week of October. We got a couple of rains in the next 3 weeks, four to be exact, and here came the grass. I had some real bad spots about the size of a car or a little bigger so you definitely knew there was no grass. Now almost a month later you can hardly tell that the dead spots are there. Once all the dead grass is gone the spots will be gone. It took longer for the grass to come up closer to the house as it does not get much sun. But it is still growing there as well. I had to run the mower over it to get the leaves up a couple of times so it was not 3 inches tall for the first mowing. Probably only an inch. I don’t think I have killed any of it yet. Worked great for me! I guess ya just gotta be smarter than the grass seed.
I bought this product not knowing what to expect because there were a few conflicting reviews. I have to say I was amazed by this seed I spread it in the bare spots watered it everyday and and in 3 days it was growing. It grew in thick and has a pleasing shade of green. I am curious how it will weather in the winter so I will have to update this review in the spring. I would highly recommend this for fast and satisfying results.
Seed produced a smaller blade, dark green grass. Planted the first batch Sept. 8. One week later green shoots appeared. Grows well in a semi-arid climate if watered often enough to stay moist. Also, covering seed with 1/4 inch of mulch helps with moisture in a dry climate. Very attractive grass.
I am very pleased with this product. It was delivered in time with no problems. Seeds germinates in about five days if directions are followed. Grass is very green and healthy looking. I must say that I was a little weary because all I had in my yard was red clay dirt, but, I did loosen the clay and added black soil for seeds on top for planting. It only been about 10 days now and most of the yard is covered, but I do have a rather small yard. Would use again.
I received my package last Monday and started laying my new grass seed the next day. As I’m truly a beginner with growing new lawn, I didn’t know what to expect with my new seed.
The product description was a little vague with respect to what regions this seed mix thrived in (without doing any additional homework). I just made sure the new grass had proper water and fertilizer in place prior to laying the new seed. To my utmost surprise, the seeds started to germinate within 5 days in some areas.
Seems to thrive in shaded areas rather then sunny spots (just growing at a smaller rate). The blades are already an inch high in the shaded areas. Maybe quarter of an inch in the sunny areas. I couldn’t be anymore happier with product. Thank you for your quality product!
I did try a Scott’s grass seed prior to this and couldn’t even get a single seed to germinate. Clearly, a premium high quality seed mix.
This is by far the best grass seed available on the market. After visiting a sod farm and on their recommendation, husband & I purchased this grass seed. We also learned the secret of sowing grass is never let the grass seed dry out. We tilled the yard, installed a sprinkler system, planted the grass seed and now have a beautiful lush green lawn. Will continue to buy Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra Grass Seed.
